Yes. The Galaxy S23, S23+, S23 Ultra and S23 FE all support eSIM in most markets — which means you can add a travel data plan without opening the SIM tray, and keep your home number in it at the same time.
The exception is regional, not model-based: Samsung ships variants for a handful of markets — most notably mainland China and Hong Kong — with dual physical SIM slots and no eSIM. Two identical-looking S23s can behave differently for this reason alone, so the first section below is the 30-second check that settles it for your particular handset.

Unlike Apple, Samsung does not gate eSIM by tier. The eSIM chip is the same on the base S23 as on the Ultra, and the S23 FE — released later and positioned as the affordable member of the family — keeps it too. If your phone was sold in Europe, North America, most of Southeast Asia, Korea, Japan, Australia or India, you almost certainly have eSIM.
What varies is the combination you can run:
· Nano-SIM + eSIM — the standard configuration everywhere eSIM is present, and the one travelers use: home number in the tray, travel data on the eSIM.
· eSIM + eSIM — supported on some regions and software builds. Samsung has expanded dual-eSIM support across One UI versions, so it depends on your exact variant and update level. Open SIM manager and see whether a second eSIM can be added while one is already installed; that is the only reliable test.
· Two physical SIMs, no eSIM — the regional variants noted above.
1. Open Settings > Connections > SIM manager. If you see an Add eSIM option, the phone has eSIM. Done.
2. Or dial *#06#. If the pop-up lists an EID alongside the IMEI numbers, there is an eSIM inside.
3. Cross-check the model code in Settings > About phone > Model number — the S23 family is SM-S911x, the S23+ SM-S916x, the S23 Ultra SM-S918x and the S23 FE SM-S711x. The trailing letters encode the region, which is where the eSIM difference lives.

Three situations produce the "my S23 supports eSIM but it will not install" complaint:
4. A dual-physical-SIM regional variant. No EID, no eSIM, nothing to be done. Common in phones bought in mainland China and Hong Kong, and in grey-market imports sold cheaply elsewhere. See Does it matter where I bought my phone?
5. A carrier-locked handset. Bought on an instalment plan or second-hand from a carrier, the phone accepts only that carrier's profiles. Check with your operator, and read Carrier lock: how to check and unlock your device. On Samsung the symptom is an eSIM that installs and then never registers.
6. An old software build. eSIM handling improved substantially across One UI releases. Before traveling, run Settings > Software update > Download and install — a five-minute update prevents a class of installation failures that are otherwise hard to diagnose abroad.
Do this at home, on Wi-Fi. Downloading the profile needs a connection; the plan itself normally starts counting when the eSIM first connects to a network at your destination, so early installation costs nothing — see Can I install my eSIM before my trip? 7. Open Settings > Connections > SIM manager.
8. Tap Add eSIM.
9. Choose Scan QR code from service provider and point the camera at the code from your order email, shown on a laptop or a second phone.
10. No second screen? Tap Enter activation code and type the SM-DP+ address and activation code from the same email. The result is identical.
11. Confirm the download. The profile appears in SIM manager within a few seconds.
12. Rename it — "Japan Nov 10GB" beats "SIM 2". Tap the profile to edit the name and color.
13. Still in SIM manager: Preferred SIM > Mobile data → your travel eSIM.
14. Calls and Text messages → your home SIM, so your usual number keeps working normally.
15. Open Settings > Connections > Mobile networks, select the home SIM and turn Data roaming OFF.
16. Select the travel eSIM and turn Data roaming ON. This sounds backwards but is required: a travel eSIM works by roaming onto partner networks.

The S23's dual-SIM behaviour is what makes it a genuinely good travel phone. With both lines active:
· Your home number stays reachable for calls, SMS and bank OTPs — critical if your bank sends verification codes by text.
· All data comes from the travel eSIM, at local prices instead of roaming prices.
· Apps do not care which line carries the data. WhatsApp, Zalo, Messenger, Google Maps and Grab behave exactly as they do at home.
· You can switch the data line at any time from the quick-settings panel or SIM manager, in two taps.
One Samsung-specific detail worth setting: in SIM manager, if you see an option that lets calls fall back to the other SIM when one has no network, decide deliberately whether you want it. It is convenient at home and can produce an unwanted roaming connection abroad. The equivalent iOS setting causes the same surprise, and it is the most common cause of "I used a travel eSIM and still got charged".

Running a second line does cost battery, because both radios stay registered to a network. On the S23 family the effect is small — typically a few percent over a day — and it is comprehensively outweighed by three other things travelers do:
17. Navigation with the screen on. The single biggest drain, by a wide margin.
18. 5G in weak-signal areas, where the modem keeps searching. Forcing LTE is the fix: Settings > Connections > Mobile networks > Network mode → LTE/3G/2G.
19. Hotspot sharing to a laptop or a travel companion.
Practical measures that make a real difference on an S23: download offline maps for the city, enable Data saver (Settings > Connections > Data usage > Data saver), set photo backup to Wi-Fi only, and turn the travel eSIM off in the evening if you are on hotel Wi-Fi. A normal travel day — maps, messaging, rideshare, translation, social media and a few video calls — runs 500MB to 1.5GB. Heavy photo and video uploads push it well past that, especially with the S23 Ultra's 200MP files: a single backed-up photo can be tens of megabytes.
