Overview

Vasant Panchami 2027 falls on Thursday 11 February, the fifth day of the bright half of Magha 1 2. In Kolkata it is Saraswati Puja: clay goddesses sold from Kumartuli carts, a morning anjali in every neighbourhood, khichuri lunches and a city dressed in yellow. In Delhi, qawwals carry mustard flowers to the Nizamuddin Dargah. Entry everywhere is free.

Highlights

  • Watch Kumartuli artisans paint Saraswati idols in the days before the puja 9
  • Join a neighbourhood anjali, offering flowers to the goddess before noon 7
  • Eat khichuri, labra and kul chutney at a para puja lunch 3 5
  • See Kolkata's young people out in yellow on Bengal's unofficial Valentine's Day 4
  • Hear Basant qawwali in the courtyard of Delhi's Nizamuddin Dargah 14

Finding the right para pandal before anjali

Saraswati Puja has no central stage. Every lane in Kolkata puts up its own small marquee, and schools, colleges, clubs and homes each run their own puja from early morning to midday 6. That is the charm and the problem. The anjali, when families offer flowers to the goddess, happens once, in the morning, and many people fast until it is done 7. If a Bengali friend has invited you to their building's puja in Shyambazar or Salt Lake, you need a live map pin, not a vague "turn left at the sweet shop".

Lanes in north Kolkata around Kumartuli and Shobhabazar are narrow, numbered inconsistently and full of identical yellow-and-white pandals. Losing signal at 9:30 on puja morning means turning up after the flowers have been offered and the priest has moved on to the next household. A working connection lets you share live location, read the group chat when the host changes the time, and call the friend who is stuck in the queue for the khichuri.

Paying at the Kumartuli idol carts

In the days before the puja, small Saraswati idols are sold from carts and pavement stalls around Kumartuli 9. Sellers handle a fast stream of families, and the small amounts for idols, marigolds, palash flowers and kul berries change hands quickly. Having a payment app online, or a hotspot for a friend whose phone has gone quiet, keeps the queue moving.

Translating Bengali notices on puja boards

Neighbourhood committees pin up their timings in Bengali: when the anjali starts, when bhog is served, when the evening cultural programme begins. Camera translation turns a handwritten board in Bagbazar into something you can act on, and saves you asking a busy volunteer who is carrying a pot of khichuri.

Sending the anjali home on video

For many diaspora visitors, the point of Saraswati Puja in Kolkata is a video call to parents abroad while the conch sounds. Uploads stall when a whole lane is filming the same goddess, so a reliable connection matters more here than on a quiet sightseeing day.

When Is Vasant Panchami in 2027?

Vasant Panchami 2027 falls on Thursday 11 February, which the Department of Personnel and Training lists as "Basant Panchami, Sri Panchami" in its 2027 restricted holidays for central government offices in Delhi 1. Panchang publishers give the same day: Magha Shukla Panchami, the fifth lunar day of the bright fortnight of Magha, observed on 11 February 2027 because that tithi holds at sunrise 2.

The date moves every year because it follows the lunar month of Magha, not the solar calendar. The festival is fixed to the fifth tithi after the new moon, and the rule used by most calendars is the udaya tithi rule: the festival is kept on the day the Panchami tithi is in force at sunrise 2. That is why the gap between two editions can be large.

  • Vasant Panchami 2026: Friday 23 January 2026 2

  • Vasant Panchami 2027: Thursday 11 February 2027 2

In 2026 the Panchami tithi began at 2:28 am on 23 January and ended at 1:46 am on 24 January 3. Exact tithi minutes vary by city, so Bengali households follow the local panjika for the precise window of the morning puja.

Other parts of India mark the same morning differently. Pilgrims bathe in the Ganga: Prayagraj's Magh Mela treated Basant Panchami as one of its main bathing days, on 23 January 2026 20, and the Haridwar Ardh Kumbh schedule lists a bath on 11 February 2027 19. In Punjab, Basant means kites; Patiala's idol makers on Sirhind Road also finish Saraswati figures for the day 9. Punjab bans Chinese dor kite string, and on the eve of Basant Panchami in 2023 police in Fatehgarh Sahib arrested 14 people and seized 22 rolls of it 17.

Tip: The puja itself is over by midday 6. If you fly into Kolkata on the morning of 11 February 2027, you will miss the anjali. Arrive on 10 February at the latest.

Do Kolkata's Saraswati Puja Pandals Charge Entry?

No. Saraswati Puja in Kolkata is free to watch: there are no tickets, no wristbands and no paid viewing areas. Small marquees go up in almost every locality, and neighbours walk in to pay their respects 6. That is very different from the big themed pandals of autumn; the Saraswati pandal is usually a modest structure built by a residents' club or a single building.

What a visitor can and cannot do depends on who runs the puja:

  • Neighbourhood (para) pujas: open to passers-by. Stand at the side, remove shoes if others have, and watch the priest chant to the sound of conch shells and cymbals 6.

  • Schools and colleges: campuses transform for the day 4, but these are institutional events for students, staff and invited families. Do not walk in uninvited.

  • Home pujas: by invitation only. Being asked to one is the best way to see hate khori, a child's first letters written with a parent guiding the hand 4.

  • Kumartuli lanes: free to walk. Workshops are working spaces, so ask before photographing an artisan.

Money still changes hands, just not at a gate. Offerings of flowers and fruit are customary 5, and some neighbourhood committees welcome a small donation towards the bhog lunch. Nobody will ask a visitor for one.

Saraswati Puja in Kolkata on 11 February 2027 is therefore a free day out: the costs are a room, rides across the city, food and the flowers you choose to offer.

Tip: If a committee offers you khichuri bhog, accept it with your right hand and eat what you take. Refusing outright can seem rude; taking a small portion is fine.

How Do You Reach Kumartuli From Kolkata Airport?

The simplest rail route from Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport to Kumartuli uses two Metro lines. Take the Yellow Line from Jai Hind Bimanbandar, the underground station at the airport, to Noapara, then change to the Blue Line 11. Ride the Blue Line south to Sovabazar Sutanuti, the station nearest Kumartuli 10.

The airport stretch of the Yellow Line opened to passengers on 25 August 2025 11. It runs 6.77 km with four stations: Noapara, Dum Dum Cantonment, Jessore Road and Jai Hind Bimanbandar 12. Dum Dum Cantonment links to suburban trains, but the Blue Line interchange is at Noapara 11.

Kumartuli itself is the old potters' quarter of north Kolkata, packed between Rabindra Sarani (the old Chitpur Road) and the Hooghly River, between Ahiritola and Shobhabazar 10. Other ways in:

  • Circular Railway: Sovabazar Ahiritola and Bagbazar stations sit close to Kumartuli 10.

  • Bus: route 43, Esplanade to Dakshineswar, passes the area 10.

  • App cabs: handy with luggage, but drivers will stop at the mouth of the lanes; Kumartuli's alleys are too narrow for cars.

For Saraswati Puja in Kolkata in February 2027, the airport Metro route matters most if you land the evening before and want to reach a north Kolkata stay without traffic. On puja morning itself, most people walk between neighbourhood marquees, so a base near a Blue Line station keeps everything within reach.

Tip: Download an offline map of north Kolkata before you land. The lanes off Rabindra Sarani twist, and street signs are often only in Bengali.

What Happens at the Morning Anjali?

The anjali is the heart of Saraswati Puja: worshippers hold flowers, repeat the priest's verses and offer the flowers to the goddess, and many people fast until it is done 7. Rituals start early in the morning and continue until midday in schools, colleges, clubs and homes 6. The day runs roughly like this:

  • Early morning: the priest begins the puja. Devotees offer seasonal palash flowers at the goddess's feet, with conch shells and cymbals 6.

  • Mid-morning: anjali in rounds. Students place books, pens and musical instruments beside the idol to receive blessings 6.

  • Midday: bhog is served, usually khichuri with vegetables, chutney and sweets 6.

  • Afternoon: young people go out in yellow, visit friends' pujas, pandal hop, eat out and gather by the river 5.

  • Evening: schools and neighbourhoods stage music, dance and theatre programmes 5.

The idol itself is worth a close look. Bengali Saraswati figures are usually white, with a crescent moon on the brow, seated on a lotus or riding a swan 6, and most hold a veena.

Saraswati Puja on Thursday 11 February 2027 falls on a working weekday in Kolkata, but for students it is a "no study" day 6. Books stay with the goddess until the next day, and touching books or pens on the day is believed to upset her, so many people avoid it 5.

Note: You do not need to be Hindu to stand at the back during anjali. Ask the host before joining in, cover your shoulders and take your shoes off where others have.

What Do Kolkata Families Eat for Saraswati Puja?

Khichuri, rice and lentils cooked with potato and cauliflower, is the dish of Saraswati Puja, served with fried brinjal, mixed vegetables, chutney and sweets at neighbourhood lunches and in schools 6. Labra, a mixed vegetable curry, and bhaja, fried potato, brinjal or cauliflower, are the usual partners on the bhog plate 3.

Kul, the sour Indian jujube, has a rule of its own. Many Bengali families do not eat kul until it has been offered to the goddess at Saraswati Puja 7. After the puja, kooler chutney, a jujube chutney, becomes a festive staple 5.

The sweets on the altar are seasonal too:

  • Naru: coconut and jaggery balls offered to the goddess 5

  • Moya: popped Kanakchur rice bound with date palm jaggery 5

  • Payesh: rice pudding, often on the lunch plate

The day after Saraswati Puja is Sheetal Shashthi, the "cold sixth". Bengali mothers observe it for the protection of their children, and no kitchen fire is lit: everything is cooked the day before and eaten cold 8. The signature dish is gota sheddho, baby potatoes, baby brinjals, flat beans, spinach tips, green peas and sweet potatoes cooked whole, skin on, with whole moong dal, finished with mustard oil 8. Panta bhaat, fermented rice, and a jujube chutney sit alongside 8.

For Vasant Panchami 2027 in Kolkata, that means khichuri on Thursday 11 February and gota sheddho on Friday 12 February. Only home kitchens cook gota sheddho, so an invitation from a Bengali family is the way to taste it.

Tip: Sweet shops across north Kolkata sell naru and seasonal sweets in the days before the puja. Buy them on the morning of 10 February 2027 if you are visiting a family the next day.

Why Are Books Off-Limits on Saraswati Puja?

On Saraswati Puja, books, pens and instruments belong to the goddess. Students lay them beside the idol for blessings 6, and the day is treated as a no-study day; touching a book or pen is believed to upset Saraswati 5. Only after the puja closes do families take the books back.

That rule shapes how a visitor should behave around the altar:

  • Leave the books alone. Do not pick up, move or photograph close up the notebooks and instruments placed before the goddess.

  • Hate khori is private. Writing a child's first letters on a slate, with a parent guiding the hand, is a home ritual that many families still keep 4. Watch only if invited.

  • Wear yellow, or white. Yellow links the goddess, learning and spring's mustard fields 5; light colours are the safe choice 3.

  • Expect couples. Saraswati Puja is called Bengal's unofficial Valentine's Day, because single-gender schools traditionally made it the one day boys and girls could mix freely 5. Coordinated yellow outfits often signal a couple 4. Do not photograph strangers' dates.

  • Campus pujas can be political. Several Kolkata college pujas have been the subject of disputes between student groups, so treat campuses as closed unless a student invites you.

Saraswati Puja in Kolkata on 11 February 2027 rewards visitors who behave like guests in someone's home, because that is what most pujas are. Keep shoes off where others do and ask before photographing the goddess.

Note: Do not offer kul at an altar if you have already eaten one that morning. Families who keep the kul rule take it seriously 7.

What Is Kolkata's Weather in Mid-February?

February is one of Kolkata's most comfortable months. Long-term India Meteorological Department averages for Alipore give February a mean daily high of 29.4°C and a mean daily low of 18.1°C, with 24.6 mm of rain over about 1.5 rainy days 13. January averages are cooler, a high of 25.5°C and a low of 14.3°C 13.

That matters because Vasant Panchami's date swings between the two months. In 2026 it fell on 23 January, in the cooler window 2. On 11 February 2027 Kolkata should be warm by late morning and cool at dawn 2.

What that means on the day:

  • Dawn: the puja starts early and the air is cool. A light shawl or cardigan over a sari or kurta is enough.

  • Late morning: the sun gets strong during anjali queues. Carry water.

  • Evening: pleasant for walking between neighbourhood programmes.

  • Rain: rare, but not impossible; a compact umbrella doubles as sun cover.

Crowds are moderate. Saraswati Puja fills lanes and schools, not the whole city, and there is no city-wide gridlock of the kind seen in autumn. The busiest window is mid-morning, when anjali rounds overlap, and early afternoon, when young people head out in yellow 5.

Tip: Arrive by the evening of 10 February 2027, rest, and be at your chosen neighbourhood puja by early morning on the 11th. The anjali is over long before tourists usually start their day.

Which North Kolkata Neighbourhood Suits a Saraswati Puja Stay?

North Kolkata is the best base for Saraswati Puja because the potters of Kumartuli, the old lanes of Shobhabazar and Bagbazar, and the Blue Line all sit together 10. From a room near Sovabazar Sutanuti station you can walk to the idol workshops the day before and to several para pujas on the morning itself.

How the main areas compare for this festival:

  • Shobhabazar and Bagbazar: closest to Kumartuli, with Circular Railway stations at Sovabazar Ahiritola and Bagbazar 10. Fewer polished hotels; more guesthouses.

  • Shyambazar: a Blue Line stop, busy, well connected, with plenty of neighbourhood marquees.

  • Central Kolkata near Esplanade: the widest choice of hotels; bus route 43 runs from Esplanade towards Kumartuli 10.

  • Salt Lake: quieter and newer, with residential block pujas. It is a ride away from Kumartuli.

  • Near the airport: only for a late arrival; the Yellow Line now links Jai Hind Bimanbandar to Noapara 11.

Vasant Panchami does not cause the city-wide room shortage that Kolkata sees in autumn, but students, returning relatives and wedding parties fill rooms in late January and February. Book as soon as your flights are fixed for Kolkata's Saraswati Puja on 11 February 2027, especially if you want a heritage guesthouse in north Kolkata.

Tip: Ask your host whether their building holds its own puja. Many residential buildings run one, and a guest is often invited to the anjali and lunch.

Will Your Phone Keep Up at a Kolkata Anjali?

Your phone will work in Kolkata's lanes, but it will be busiest exactly when you need it: mid-morning, when every family in the neighbourhood is filming the anjali and sending photos to relatives. Saraswati Puja is spread across hundreds of small marquees rather than one ground, so you rarely face a stadium-style blackout, just slow uploads in packed lanes.

What you will use data for on 11 February 2027 in Kolkata:

  • Maps: finding a building puja in an unnumbered lane near Shobhabazar.

  • Translation: reading Bengali timing boards and menus at sweet shops.

  • Messaging: coordinating with a host whose plans change at short notice.

  • Video: calls home during the anjali, and photos of the goddess.

  • Rides: booking a cab out of north Kolkata in the afternoon.

Public Wi-Fi is not a plan; few neighbourhood pandals offer it. A local SIM or an India eSIM installed before you fly means you land at Jai Hind Bimanbandar already online. Indian numbers are needed for some payment and ride apps, so check what your plan supports before relying on it. Save 112 as well: it is India's single emergency number for police, fire and ambulance 18.

Battery is the other limit. Puja morning starts before dawn and the evening programmes run late, so a small power bank in a shoulder bag saves you from hunting for a socket in a stranger's building.

Tip: Upload your anjali video from your guesthouse in the afternoon, not from the lane. You will spend less battery fighting a crowded cell.

How Does Delhi's Nizamuddin Dargah Celebrate Basant?

At Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya's dargah in Delhi, Basant Panchami is a Sufi festival. Tradition holds that the saint grieved for a long time after his nephew, Khwaja Taqiuddin Nuh, died, and that his disciple Amir Khusrau dressed in yellow to celebrate spring and made him smile 16. The dargah still marks the day in yellow clothes, yellow flowers and special qawwali 15.

On Basant Panchami in 2026, qawwals walked through the lanes of Nizamuddin Basti singing Khusrau's poetry and carrying yellow mustard flowers, starting at the grave of the saint's nephew 14. The procession reached the dargah around 4 pm, when the singers gathered in the courtyard 14. Visitors wore yellow caps, turbans and scarves, and yellow flowers replaced the usual red roses on the marble 14.

Practical points for the dargah:

  • Location: Nizamuddin West, near the Mathura Road and Lodhi Road intersection, entered through Amir Khusro Gate 16.

  • Women: traditionally not allowed into the inner sanctum 16.

  • Thursday nights: the regular Thursday qawwali draws about 1,500 visitors 16.

  • Daily qawwali: sessions take place every evening after the Maghrib prayer 16.

Basant at the Nizamuddin Dargah on Thursday 11 February 2027 falls on the same weekday as the dargah's busiest regular qawwali night, so expect the lanes of Nizamuddin Basti to be full 1.

Tip: Cover your head, wear something yellow and leave shoes at the stalls near the entrance. Buy flowers from the lane stalls rather than carrying your own.

Frequently asked questions

Not nationally. The Department of Personnel and Training lists Basant Panchami on Thursday 11 February 2027 as a restricted holiday for central government offices in Delhi, so employees may choose to take it 1. States publish their own lists; West Bengal schools and colleges celebrate Saraswati Puja on campus, so classes stop for the puja even where offices stay open.

Saraswati Puja is called Bengal's Valentine's Day because many Kolkata schools were traditionally single-gender, and this was the one day boys and girls could meet freely in public 5. Young people dress in yellow, visit each other's pujas and spend the afternoon out together; matching yellow outfits often signal a couple 4.

Yes, at most neighbourhood pandals, as long as you ask first. Stand at the back, take your shoes off where others have, and follow the priest's lead when flowers are handed round. Many families fast until the anjali is done 7, so do not eat in front of the altar. School and college pujas are for invited guests only.

Many Bengali families wait to eat kul, the sour Indian jujube, until it has been offered to the goddess at Saraswati Puja 7. Eating it beforehand is said to upset her. After the puja the fruit returns to the table, and kooler chutney becomes a festive staple 5.

No. Women are traditionally not allowed inside the inner sanctum of Hazrat Nizamuddin Dargah, on Basant or any other day 16. They can join the crowd in the courtyard, where the Basant qawwali is sung and yellow flowers are thrown 14. Cover your head and leave shoes at the entrance.

Install it at home before you fly, and switch it on when you land at Kolkata airport. On puja morning you will need maps to reach a building puja in north Kolkata's narrow lanes, translation for Bengali notice boards and video calls home during the anjali. Neighbourhood pandals rarely offer Wi-Fi, so a working connection from arrival matters.
