Finding your section when the band truck moves

On Carnival Monday and Tuesday a band is not a place, it is a moving block of costumed people that crawls through Port of Spain between a start point and the Queen's Park Savannah stage, with the NCC listing the Monday parade from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and the Tuesday parade from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. 1 Your friends will be in a section, behind a particular truck, and the truck is rarely where the schedule says it should be. Group chats, shared locations and the band's own social posts are how masqueraders actually find each other, and the same applies if you are a spectator trying to catch one specific band as it reaches the stage. 1 Add the pre-dawn J'ouvert start at 4 a.m. on Monday, when streets are dark and crowded, and a dead phone or missing signal stops being a minor annoyance. 1 Everything else on this page, from late rides to fete tickets, depends on the phone staying alive and online.

Buying fete tickets on the app

Fetes are the parties that fill the weeks before Carnival, and in the 2026 season tickets were sold through an e-ticket app at prices between US$50 and US$700 per event depending on the experience. 4 Your QR code lives on your phone, and entrances at big fetes are queues where staff scan screens rather than read paper. Download the app and top up your account at the hotel, not in the line.

Booking a ride home after midnight

Roads close for the parade and Savannah traffic is heavy, and visitors in 2026 were warned that taxis and ride-share cars could be unreliable on the busiest days. 4 The ride-share apps named in that guide only work when your phone has data, so a charged phone with a working plan is the difference between a booked car and a long walk. 4

Sharing your location with someone back home

The UK government warns that robberies and opportunistic crime may occur during the carnival period and advises a clear plan for getting home safely after any large event. 10 Sending a live location to a friend or relative, and keeping a call or message line open, is the simplest part of that plan and needs mobile data rather than hotel Wi-Fi.

When Is Trinidad Carnival in 2027?

Trinidad Carnival 2027 is expected on Monday 8 and Tuesday 9 February 2027, with Ash Wednesday following on 10 February. 1 The date is expected rather than confirmed here because the National Carnival Commission (NCC) site, which publishes the calendar, did not list a full 2027 events schedule when we checked on 2026-10-15. 3

Carnival always falls on the Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, so it moves each year with Easter. 1 The same rule gave 16 and 17 February in 2026, 3 and 4 March in 2025 and 12 and 13 February in 2024, according to the list of recent dates. 5 For 2028, the NCC ten-year calendar reported by Rio Times lists 28 and 29 February. 1

Carnival season itself is much longer than two days. Mas bands launch their costumes from mid-year, fetes run from the New Year, and the Panorama steelband rounds and calypso and chutney soca competitions fill the weeks before the parade. 4 In the 2026 season, for example, the Pan Semi-Finals were held on Sunday 1 February, Dimanche Gras on Sunday 15 February and J'ouvert at 4 a.m. on Monday 16 February. 4 Applying the same weekday pattern to 2027 gives Dimanche Gras on Sunday 7 February 2027, which Rio Times reports at 7 to 11:30 p.m. at Carnival City. 1

  • Carnival was cancelled in 2021 and 2022 because of COVID-19, so the festival has a recent gap that explains why registration and demand were strong on its return. 5Monday 8 February 2027: J'ouvert at 4 a.m., then the Monday parade 1

  • Tuesday 9 February 2027: the main costume parade 1

  • Wednesday 10 February 2027: Ash Wednesday, the season closes 1

Tip: Treat 8 and 9 February 2027 as the planning dates, and check the NCC site for the final events calendar before you pay for anything non-refundable. 3

What Does a Mas Band Costume Cost Compared With Watching From the Roadside?

Watching the Trinidad Carnival parades from the roadside is free, while joining a band means buying a costume package from that band. 1 Nothing on the street is ticketed for spectators, and there is no single national ticket for the parade. 1 The paid layers are the bands, the fetes and the judged shows.

Costumes are custom-made, and in the 2026 guide men's and women's costumes started at about US$1,000 before belts, backpacks and tails, with a full masquerader outlay estimated near US$2,500. 4 For the 2027 season, Harts listed costume sections from TT$5,795 to TT$6,195 and a drinks package at TT$895, with a student option without alcohol at TT$400, and the article uses a rate of about TT$6.76 per US$1. 1 YUMA includes an all-inclusive bar on both days, with final payment due 31 January 2027. 1 Deposits are usually non-refundable after registration and sizes cannot be changed. 1

Registration opens months ahead and spots fill fast, with deadlines usually around August or September for the following year. 4 That means anyone reading this in October 2026 may already have missed the cheapest windows, though larger bands keep sections open longer. Some packages cover only the road while fetes and lunches need separate registration, so read what each package includes. 4

  • Spectator on the road: free 1

  • Non-masquerader outfit for J'ouvert and Tuesday: about US$500 in the 2026 season 4

  • Fete tickets: US$50 to US$700 per event in the 2026 season 4

  • Professional glam make-up: about US$200 per event in the 2026 season 4

Tip: Ask any band for a written list of what the package includes, meaning food, drinks, a shuttle and bag service, before you pay your first deposit.

How Do You Get From Piarco Airport to Woodbrook and the Savannah?

Piarco International Airport (POS) is the main gateway and sits about 30 km east of downtown Port of Spain. 1 Flights into Trinidad are usually cheaper than flights to Tobago's ANR Robinson airport, and the island has no train, so every route into the city is by road. 4

Expect heavy traffic and road closures in the Carnival week, and book transport early because taxis and ride-share cars can be unreliable on the busiest days. 4 The guide for the 2026 season named three ride-share apps, TTRideshare, Drop Ride and Ridely, and described the first as cheaper than renting a car or hiring a driver. 4 Some bands also run shuttles to and from the parade route. 4 Official airport stand taxis are not metered, so agree the fare in Trinidad and Tobago dollars before you get in, ideally at the taxi desk inside the terminal.

Port of Spain itself is compact enough around the Savannah that you can walk between Woodbrook, Newtown and the park in daylight, but Carnival crowds change that after dark. Woodbrook is the closest area to the fetes and parade route, and its streets are packed with pop-ups on parade days. 4

The Savannah is a big loop of level ground. Queen's Park Savannah covers about 260 acres (110 hectares) with a perimeter of about 3.5 km, and the Grand Stand sits on its southern side. 7 During Carnival a temporary North Stand and raised stage are built in front of it to create the Big Yard where the Parade of the Bands is judged and broadcast. 7

  • Airport to downtown: about 30 km by road 1

  • Driving: the Savannah ring road and Woodbrook streets close on parade days 4

  • Walking: fine in daylight between Woodbrook and the Savannah; arrange rides after dark

Tip: Book the airport pick-up in advance for a late arrival and use it to get to your accommodation directly, as the UK government advises, instead of stopping in town. 10

How Does the Carnival Programme Run From Panorama Night to Ash Wednesday?

The Trinidad Carnival programme builds from steelband and calypso competitions to Dimanche Gras on Sunday, J'ouvert at 4 a.m. on Monday and the full costume parades on Monday and Tuesday. 1

Panorama is the national steelband competition, held since 1963, and its final is played at Queen's Park Savannah. 6 The Canada Caribbean Institute describes it as the world's largest steelpan competition with youth, community and large orchestra categories. 13 Rio Times reports 60 to 80 bands entering the preliminaries, each with 75 to 200 players, and says the final is traditionally held on the Saturday before Carnival, though the NCC had not yet listed 2027 dates. 1 In 2026 the Pan Semi-Finals fell on Sunday 1 February. 4

Dimanche Gras is the Sunday night show where the finals of the Kings and Queens of Carnival are judged, listed for Sunday 7 February 2027 at Carnival City. 1

J'ouvert is French for break of day and starts the official two days of Carnival. 5 Revellers dance to calypso and soca in homemade or satirical costume, covered in oil, mud and powder, in the Canboulay tradition. 5 The start is 4 a.m. on Monday. 1 The NCC lists the Monday parade from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and the Tuesday parade from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. 1 In the 2026 season the Monday programme also had a Traditional Carnival Characters Parade at 9 a.m. and Tuesday was Full Costume Road March Day at 8 a.m. 4

The International Soca Monarch, once held on Carnival Friday with a Power title at 135 bpm and above and a Groovy title at 134 bpm and below, has no recorded edition after 2021 on the page we checked, so do not plan around it. 8 Chutney Soca Monarch ran separately, with its 2026 finals on Sunday 8 February at Skinner Park in San Fernando. 9

  • Panorama final: traditionally the Saturday before Carnival, 2027 date not listed 1

  • Dimanche Gras: Sunday 7 February 2027, 7 to 11:30 p.m. 1

  • J'ouvert: Monday 8 February 2027, from 4 a.m. 1

What Is February Weather Like on the Road in Port of Spain?

February in Port of Spain sits in the dry season, with daytime highs around 86°F (30°C) and night-time lows around 68°F (20°C). 12 The same table shows about 8 hours of sunshine per day, roughly 8 days with some rain and about 1.8 inches (46 mm) of rain for the month, with sea temperature around 79°F. 12 The Rio Times article also notes that February is dry and advises water, sun cream and comfortable shoes. 1

The weather problem is not rain but sun on asphalt. The parade runs from morning to evening, and masqueraders who start before 11 a.m. on Monday or 8 a.m. on Tuesday are in the sun for hours. 1 Carry water, and ask whether your band's package includes a water truck and a mobile bar.

The crowd peaks at the Savannah stage, where bands cross and then slow down. Spectators who want to see costumes at their best should arrive early on Tuesday morning, when the bands are fresh, and watch before midday heat sets in. Crowds around the Grand Stand are thickest in the afternoon; if you do not hold a seat, a spot along the road outside it is free. 7

  • Daytime: sunscreen, hat and a refillable bottle 4

  • J'ouvert: pre-dawn, so bring layers you do not mind covering in paint and mud 5

  • Evening: lighter air, but it stays warm; shoes that cope with sticky ground 12

Tip: Carry a small waterproof pouch for your phone on J'ouvert morning; powder, mud and spilled drinks reach everything.

Which Port of Spain Neighbourhood Suits Carnival Week Best?

Woodbrook is the closest neighbourhood to the fetes and the parade route, so it is the default base for Carnival week. 4 Newtown is nearby, while Cascade and St Clair are quieter, with guesthouses and apartments. 4 Many experienced visitors stay with friends or locals instead of booking a hotel. 4

Book six to twelve months ahead for Carnival week. 4 For a February 2027 trip written about in October 2026, that window is already closing, so look for places that offer free cancellation or pay-at-property terms, as the Carnifest listing recommends. 2 The 2026 guide gave a range of US$200 to US$600 per night for hotels and short-term rentals. 4

Where you sleep decides how you get home. The UK government advises particular caution in parts of downtown Port of Spain east of Charlotte Street, as well as Laventille, Morvant, Belmont and the interior of Queen's Park Savannah. 10 Pick lodging in or near Woodbrook, St Clair or Cascade, and avoid arriving with luggage on foot. Note that the Savannah interior is on the caution list, so cross it by road rather than on foot at night. 10

  • Woodbrook: closest to fetes and the parade route, noisiest 4

  • St Clair and Cascade: quieter, near the Savannah, easier sleep 4

  • Newtown: close to the action, short ride to Woodbrook 4

Tip: Ask your host whether the street is closed on Monday and Tuesday. A road shutdown can keep a taxi from reaching your door, so you may need to walk the last block.

Can You Rely on Mobile Signal Around Queen's Park Savannah on Parade Days?

Mobile signal is the thing most likely to fail when a crowd gathers at Queen's Park Savannah, so plan for weaker data on parade days and carry a plan that does not depend on hotel Wi-Fi. When tens of thousands of phones share the same cells, uploading video is slow and calls drop.

The rest of the stay is easier. Piarco airport terminal has free Wi-Fi, though the page is a directory listing and may be out of date. 11 Hotels and guesthouses vary. The point of a mobile plan is to keep your maps, ride apps and tickets working between those places.

A Trinidad and Tobago eSIM can be installed before you fly and switched on after landing, so you can order a car at the arrivals hall without hunting for a SIM shop. English is the official language, the time zone is UTC−4 and the currency is the Trinidad and Tobago dollar, so there is no language barrier for maps or ride apps. 14

  • Download offline maps of Port of Spain before landing

  • Save your band's WhatsApp group or Instagram handle, and screenshot QR codes for fetes

  • Keep a battery pack on J'ouvert morning; you will use the camera and location constantly

  • Turn on location sharing before you enter a crowd, not after

Tip: Screenshots of tickets and your accommodation address work without any signal, so take them before you reach the Savannah.

What Do You Need to Know to Stay Safe on the Road and at Fetes?

The UK government warns that robberies and opportunistic crime may occur during the carnival period, so keep valuables out of sight and know how you will get home before you go. 10 Avoid displaying jewellery, avoid walking alone at night or in poorly lit areas, and do not wear headphones on the street. 10

Keep your drink supervised and do not accept invitations from strangers, as the UK page warns of drug-assisted robbery. 10 The 2026 guide gave the same advice: watch your drinks for spiking, limit alcohol and travel in groups in well-lit, busy areas. 4 If you are robbed, the UK advice is not to resist because criminals are often armed. 10

For entry, UK passport holders can visit without a visa for up to 90 days, but the passport must be valid for at least 6 months from arrival, and you need an onward or return ticket and proof of funds. 11 Check the rule for your own passport before booking. You must declare cash over TT$20,000. 11 The 2026 guide also recommended travel insurance. 4

For money, use well-lit ATMs in daylight and withdraw small amounts. 10 Carry only what you need on the road, and leave passports in the hotel safe.

  • Keep phone and cash in a zipped, front-facing pouch

  • Agree a meeting point with your group before the parade starts

  • Do not wander through the Savannah interior after dark 10

  • Ask your band's marshals where the medical and water stations are

Note: Local emergency numbers were not listed on the sources we used, so ask your accommodation host to write them down on arrival.

Frequently asked questions

Dimanche Gras is worth attending if you want to see the costume artistry up close before the street parade. It is the Sunday finals night for the Kings and Queens of Carnival, listed for Sunday 7 February 2027 from 7 to 11:30 p.m. at Carnival City. 1 Check the NCC site for seating and ticket details, as the sources we used list none. 3

J'ouvert starts at 4 a.m. on Carnival Monday, which is 8 February 2027. 1 The name is French for break of day and it opens the official two days of Carnival. 5 Revellers wear old clothes and are covered in oil, mud and powder, so dress for the mess and protect your phone from water and paint. 5

The Panorama steelband finals are held at Queen's Park Savannah in Port of Spain, the same park as the Carnival judging stage. 6 Rio Times says the final is traditionally the Saturday before Carnival, but the NCC had not listed 2027 dates when we checked. 1 Confirm the exact date on the NCC site before you travel. 3

The International Soca Monarch has historically been held on Carnival Friday, with a Power title for songs at 135 bpm and above and a Groovy title for 134 bpm and below. 8 The page we checked lists no editions after 2021, so do not plan your trip around it. 8 Chutney Soca Monarch is a separate competition. 9

UK passport holders can visit Trinidad and Tobago without a visa for up to 90 days, but the passport must be valid for at least 6 months from arrival, and you need an onward or return ticket and proof of funds. 11 Other nationalities have different rules, so check with your own government or the Trinidad and Tobago immigration office before booking flights.

No official figure exists, and it depends on how much video you film. J'ouvert, the Savannah stage and the Monday and Tuesday parades are long days of maps, ride-share apps, location sharing and social posts, so a Trinidad and Tobago eSIM with generous data and a hotspot-ready battery pack is safer than relying on hotel Wi-Fi. Install it before landing. 14
