Overview

Songkran Bangkok 2027 falls on Tuesday 13 to Thursday 15 April 2027, the Thai New Year bank and public holiday, across the capital 2. Mornings belong to the old city: the Phra Buddha Sihing image at City Hall, Buddha-image bathing at Wat Pho and river temples. Afternoons belong to water play on Silom Road, Khao San Road and Siam Square, linked by the MRT, BTS and Chao Phraya boats.

Highlights

  • Pour water on the Phra Buddha Sihing image at Lan Khon Muang, City Hall
  • Bathe Buddha images at Wat Pho, then cross the river to Wat Arun
  • Join closed-road water play on Silom Road under the BTS track
  • Khao San Road water play ran 12:00–22:00 in 2026 9
  • Siam Square's White Songkran suits groups who prefer gentler splashing

One Phone Across Five Bangkok Songkran Zones

Bangkok's Thai New Year is not one site but a chain of them. A single day can start at Wat Pho at opening time, move to the Phra Buddha Sihing pavilion in front of City Hall, cross to Silom Road for the afternoon soaking and end at Khao San Road after dark. Each zone runs its own hours, screening gates and road closures, and many updates go out on official social media rather than on street signs.

The crowds that make it worth the trip also strain every network. Bangkok counted about 4.95 million visits across 94 venues on 10–15 April 2026 10. When thousands of people at Siam Square or Silom Road upload clips at once, free Wi-Fi gives up first. A phone without data on a closed road means no map to the next station, no ride home, and no way to find friends after the screening gate splits a group. A working data line is part of the waterproof kit.

Catching the Last Boat From Tha Chang Pier

The Chao Phraya Express Boat links Tha Chang, Tha Tien and Phra Arthit piers to Sathorn, which connects to BTS Saphan Taksin 20. Boats stop running in the evening. A live map tells you whether to wait at the pier or walk to MRT Sanam Chai before the last train.

Finding the Buddha Sihing Pavilion at Lan Khon Muang

In 2026 the Phra Buddha Sihing image sat in a pavilion at Lan Khon Muang, the square in front of Bangkok City Hall by the Giant Swing, from 12 to 14 April 2026 7. A saved map pin and the city's posts tell you when it leaves for the National Museum.

Paying by QR at Banthatthong Food Stalls

Banthatthong Road, near Chulalongkorn University, ran a water street with food stalls in 2026 6. Many vendors along it display a Thai QR code, and your hands are wet. A payment app on mobile data, with a camera translator for Thai-only menus, saves hunting for dry banknotes.

When Is Songkran Bangkok in 2027?

Songkran Bangkok 2027 runs from Tuesday 13 to Thursday 15 April 2027, the three Songkran days in the Bank of Thailand's 2027 holiday calendar 2. The holiday falls mid-week and does not touch a weekend 2. If you searched for Songkran Bangkok 2026, the holiday ran from Monday 13 to Wednesday 15 April 2026 3.

The date does not move with the moon. Songkran marks the sun's passage into Aries, the traditional start of the Thai year after the rice harvest, and UNESCO inscribed it as intangible heritage in 2023 4. Water poured over Buddha images and elders' hands is a blessing; the street water fights grew out of that gesture.

The holiday dates are fixed, but Bangkok's zone programme is announced each spring by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) and the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). In 2026 the events stretched well beyond the three official days:

  • Phra Buddha Sihing: displayed at Lan Khon Muang, City Hall, 12–14 April 2026 7.

  • Silom Road: closed-road water play on 12–14 April 2026, with the Amazing Bangkok Songkran Parade on 14 April 2026 5.

  • Maha Songkran World Event: Benchakitti Park, 11–15 April 2026 1.

  • ICONSIAM riverside celebration: 10–15 April 2026 5.

  • Bangkok Water Festival: 13–15 April 2026 5.

For the 2027 edition, expect a similar pattern around the fixed core, with hours confirmed by the BMA and TAT shortly before the holiday. In 2026 the BMA launched its Songkran campaign at Tha Chang Pier on 7 April 2026 11.

Tip: Land by 11 April 2027 if you want the Buddha Sihing display and the first Silom Road day, which both started on 12 April in 2026 5 7.

Which Bangkok Songkran Water Zones Are Free to Enter?

Bangkok's public street water zones are free. Silom Road, Khao San Road, Siam Square, Banthatthong Road and the Lan Khon Muang square in front of City Hall need no ticket; the gates at their entrances screen bags for banned items, not tickets. TAT's Maha Songkran World Event at Benchakitti Park was also free in 2026, including its main stage, water zone and nightly drone show 1.

The temples are where you pay. The Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew, facing Sanam Luang, charge 500 THB (October 2026), with tickets sold from 08:30 to 15:30 and the site open 08:30–16:30 14. Wat Pho, just south of the palace, charges 300 THB (October 2026) and is open 08:00–19:30; children under 120 cm enter free 15. Smaller neighbourhood temples hold Buddha-image bathing without an entry fee.

Free cultural events also run beside the water zones. In 2026 the Saneh Art by Songkran Festival ran from 10 to 30 April 2026 at Benchasiri Park and Lan Khon Muang, the City Hall square 5. ICONSIAM's riverside celebration on the Thonburi bank of the Chao Phraya, with its procession and Buddha-image bathing, was another free stop 5 6.

Bangkok's ticketed water-music festivals are separate, fenced events. In 2026 they included S2O Songkran Music Festival at S2O Land Ratchada on 11–13 April 2026 and SIAM Songkran Music Festival at Bravo BKK on 11–14 April 2026 5. Each sells through its own organiser, and the line-ups and prices for 2027 are announced by those organisers.

What a free day typically costs:

  • Temples: 500 THB for the Grand Palace and 300 THB for Wat Pho (October 2026) 14 15.

  • Transport: a few MRT, BTS and boat fares paid separately on each system.

  • Gear: a pump water gun and a phone pouch from any market near Khao San Road.

Tip: Visit the Grand Palace in the morning, because ticket sales stop at 15:30 14, and the streets around Sanam Luang fill up after lunch.

How to Reach Sanam Luang From Suvarnabhumi Airport

Sanam Luang, the royal field at 13.7550 N, 100.4931 E in front of Wat Phra Kaew and the Grand Palace, is best reached by rail and river, not by road 19. From Suvarnabhumi Airport, the Airport Rail Link runs to Phaya Thai in about 26–30 minutes for 45 THB (October 2026), from roughly 05:30 to midnight 18. Since November 2025 the gates accept contactless Visa, Mastercard, JCB and UnionPay cards 18. At Makkasan, a walk of about 7–10 minutes leads to MRT Phetchaburi on the Blue Line 18.

From MRT Phetchaburi, the Blue Line runs west under the old city to Sanam Chai. Wat Pho's own guide points visitors to Exit 1 16, and from there it is a short walk north to the Grand Palace and Sanam Luang. This is the easiest route on Songkran afternoons, when roads in Phra Nakhon district close.

The river is the other way in. Chao Phraya Express Boats stop at Tha Chang (N9) for the Grand Palace, Tha Tien (N8) for Wat Pho and Phra Arthit (N13) for Banglamphu and Khao San Road 20. Sathorn pier links to BTS Saphan Taksin on the Silom Line 20, so a boat and one BTS ride connect the old city with Silom Road.

How to reach each zone:

  • Silom Road: BTS Sala Daeng or MRT Si Lom, both at the road's eastern end 6.

  • Khao San Road: boat to Phra Arthit, then walk to the Chakraphong Road entrance 8.

  • Wat Pho: MRT Sanam Chai Exit 1, or a ferry across from the Wat Arun pier to Tha Tien 16.

  • Benchakitti Park: BTS Asok or MRT Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre 1.

Tip: The Airport Rail Link changes operator on 31 January 2027, so check its official page for any fare change before you fly 18.

How Bangkok's Songkran Unfolds Around the Phra Buddha Sihing Image

Bangkok's Songkran runs on two clocks: temple ritual in the morning and water play from the afternoon into the night. The ritual heart is the Phra Buddha Sihing, a revered image the BMA brings out of the Phuttha Monthon pavilion at the National Museum once a year so the public can pour water on it 7. In 2026 it sat at Lan Khon Muang in front of City Hall from 12 to 14 April 2026, and on 14 April 2026 it left at 15:00 on a flower-decked vehicle back to the museum 7.

Nearby, the river temples run their own ceremonies. During the Bangkok Water Festival of 13–15 April 2025, Wat Pho, Wat Arun, Wat Kanlayanamit, Wat Prayurawongsawas and Wat Rakhang Kositaram held Buddha-image bathing and merit-making from 09:00 to 18:00, with free shuttle boats between 12 piers 13. The 2026 edition again used piers around Rattanakosin Island, including Wat Pho, Wat Arun and Lhong 1919 6.

Sanam Luang has hosted the national celebration too: the Maha Songkran World Water Festival ran there on 11–15 April 2025, with a parade ending on the field 12. In 2026 TAT moved the national event to Benchakitti Park, where the regional zone opened at 11:00 and the water zone at 16:00 1.

The afternoon programme in 2026 looked like this:

  • Silom Road: water play from 13:00 on 12–14 April 2026, between the Sala Daeng and Nararam intersections 6.

  • Siam Square: White Songkran with water tunnels and T-Pop stages, 11:00–22:00 on 13–15 April 2026 6.

  • Khao San Road: water play 12:00–22:00 on 13–15 April 2026 9.

  • ICONSIAM: a Songkran queen procession on the Chao Phraya and Buddha-image bathing, 10–15 April 2026 6.

Tip: See the Buddha Sihing before noon, when the queue at Lan Khon Muang is shorter and the square is still in partial shade.

What Do Bangkok's 3S Songkran Rules Ban?

Bangkok's Songkran rules ban high-pressure water guns, coloured powder and alcohol in the main water zones. The city's 2026 guidance grouped them as 3S: Safe means play water only in designated areas and stay alcohol-free; Soft means dress modestly and harass no one; Spirit means keep the tradition 6. Silom Road ran as an alcohol-free "Safe & Soft" zone in 2026 6.

Khao San Road had the strictest layout. The Phra Nakhon District Office closed nine roads, including Chakraphong, Tanao, Rambuttri and Khao San, from noon to midnight on 13–15 April 2026 8. Entry ran one way from Chakraphong Road, exits led to Tanao Road, and the Khok Wua intersection served only as an exit 8. Screening points at the Coin Museum, the Bang Lamphu intersection and Bowonniwet Road stopped powder and pressure guns 8 9.

Penalties reported for Songkran 2026 included:

  • High-pressure water guns: banned, with fines of up to 4,000 THB 9.

  • Powder applied without consent: 5,000 THB 9.

  • Revealing clothing: 5,000 THB 9.

  • Helmetless motorbike riding: 2,000 THB for rider and passenger 9.

The BMA also asks people to splash only clean water and never to draw water from the city's canals, which can carry harmful bacteria 11. Outside the zones, the custom is simple: no water on monks, elders, babies or motorbike riders, and water guns stay outside temple grounds.

Tip: Buy a small pump gun rather than a large pressure gun at the Khao San Road stalls; screening staff confiscate the big ones at the gate.

How Hot Is Rattanakosin Island at Midday in Mid-April?

Rattanakosin Island at midday in mid-April is about as hot as Bangkok gets. Daily highs in April average about 35°C and lows about 27°C, and almost every April day counts as muggy 17. The chance of a wet day rises from 18% at the start of the month to 34% at the end, so a late-afternoon storm is possible but short 17. Sunset comes at about 18:30 17, which is when Khao San Road gets busiest.

Sanam Luang is an open field of 74.5 rai, ringed by tamarind trees but with little shade in its centre 19. The Grand Palace courtyards and Wat Pho's stone yards hold the heat too, so temple visits belong in the early morning. The BMA set up BKK Cooling Centers across the city in 2026, offering shaded rest areas 11.

Crowd levels and timing, based on the 2026 pattern:

  • 13 April: crowd 5 of 5 on Silom Road and Khao San Road in the afternoon.

  • 14 April: crowd 5 of 5 on Silom Road, the parade day in 2026 5.

  • 15 April: crowd 3 of 5, quieter in the old city as families go to temples.

  • Temples: crowd 2 of 5 at opening; Wat Pho opens at 08:00 15.

Siam Square was the busiest single site in 2026, with about 1.53 million visits, ahead of ICONSIAM with about 1.47 million and Silom Road with about 652,974 10. Arrive at the Silom Road gates near BTS Sala Daeng before the water starts, and at Khao San Road by mid-afternoon, before the Chakraphong Road queue builds after dark.

Tip: Carry an oral rehydration sachet in your pouch; soaked clothing hides how much you are sweating under the Sanam Luang sun.

Why Stay Along the Chao Phraya for Bangkok Songkran?

A base near a Chao Phraya Express Boat pier or an MRT Blue Line station keeps you moving when Bangkok's roads close for Songkran. Boats from Tha Tien (N8), Tha Chang (N9) and Phra Arthit (N13) carry on regardless of street closures, and Sathorn pier connects to BTS Saphan Taksin 20. That puts Wat Pho, Sanam Luang, Khao San Road and Silom Road within one or two rides.

How the main areas compare:

  • Tha Tien and the old city: wake up next to Wat Pho and Wat Arun; streets are quiet at night, but cars struggle to reach doors during closures.

  • Banglamphu: a short walk to Khao San Road, but the nine-road closure ran from noon to midnight on 13–15 April 2026 8.

  • Charoen Krung and Sathorn riverside: river boats one way, BTS Saphan Taksin the other; a calm return after Silom Road.

  • Silom and Sathorn: next to BTS Sala Daeng and MRT Si Lom, and a walk from the water play 6.

  • Siam and Pathumwan: central for Siam Square, Banthatthong Road and the BTS interchange.

Rooms near Khao San Road and Silom Road fill first, because many visitors want to walk back soaked rather than ride a train. Book as soon as your flights are set, choose free cancellation, and ask the hotel how guests reach the door during road closures. Families tend to prefer the riverside: the boats are an attraction in themselves and the evenings are quieter than in Banglamphu.

Older relatives do best in a hotel with a lift and a short, flat walk to a pier or MRT station. The old city's pavements are uneven, and the Khao San Road closure runs one way, entering from Chakraphong Road and leaving toward Tanao Road 8. A riverside room lets them watch the boats, visit Wat Pho early and rest through the hottest hours.

Tip: Save your hotel's name and address in Thai script; drivers find it faster when the usual route around Sanam Luang is closed.

Why Siam Square Crowds Overload Bangkok's Free Wi-Fi

Free Wi-Fi in Bangkok's Songkran zones cannot keep up with the crowds, so plan on your own mobile data. Siam Square drew about 1.53 million visits over 10–15 April 2026, and the city counted about 4.95 million across 94 venues 10. Shared hotspots slow or drop when that many phones upload video in the same few streets, which is why a personal data line matters during Songkran Bangkok.

Data does the practical work of the day. Maps show which side street around Sala Daeng or Chakraphong Road still has a way out. Ride-hailing sets a pickup point outside the closure. Live location regroups friends after a screening gate splits them, and a camera translator reads Thai-only stall boards at Banthatthong Road. Maps and messaging use little data; video calls and uploading clips use the most, so size your plan to how much you film.

An eSIM installed at home over Wi-Fi works from the moment you land at Suvarnabhumi, without a SIM-counter queue in the holiday rush. You can compare Thailand eSIM plans before you fly.

Before stepping into a water zone:

  • Offline map of Phra Nakhon and Bang Rak districts downloaded.

  • Live location shared with your group.

  • Emergency numbers saved: 1669 for medical emergencies, 199 for fire, 1672 for the TAT call centre 11 1.

  • Power bank sealed in a zip bag.

Tip: Test the phone pouch with wet fingers before you leave the hotel; touch screens often ignore taps through a damp plastic window.

Frequently asked questions

The Songkran holiday ran from Monday 13 to Wednesday 15 April 2026 3. Bangkok's events started earlier: Silom Road held water play on 12–14 April 2026, the Phra Buddha Sihing sat at Lan Khon Muang on 12–14 April 2026, and the World Event at Benchakitti Park ran 11–15 April 2026 5 7 1.

At Lan Khon Muang, the square in front of Bangkok City Hall by the Giant Swing in Phra Nakhon district. The BMA brings the image out of the National Museum once a year for Songkran; in 2026 it stood there from 12 to 14 April 2026 7. Use a small bowl, cover your shoulders and queue in the morning.

The Grand Palace's official site lists daily opening from 08:30 to 16:30, with tickets at 500 THB (October 2026) sold until 15:30 14. Royal ceremonies can close it at short notice, so check the official site the day before. Go early, since the streets around Sanam Luang get busy after lunch.

No. Wat Pho is a working royal temple, so water guns stay outside. Inside, visitors gently pour water over Buddha images as a blessing. The temple asks for polite dress with no shorts; entry is 300 THB (October 2026) and it opens 08:00–19:30 15. Change into wet-zone clothes afterwards.

Benchakitti Park and Siam Square suit families best. In 2026 Benchakitti Park had a regional culture zone from 11:00 and a separate water zone from 16:00 1, and Siam Square ran White Songkran with polite splashing 6. Khao San Road and Silom Road are crowded and loud.

It depends on how much video you share. Maps, ride-hailing, messaging and QR payments use little data, while video calls and uploading clips from Silom Road use the most. Pick a plan with headroom, because free Wi-Fi in Siam Square and Silom Road slows down under the crowds, and install the eSIM before flying.
