Why Does Losing Signal at Pointe-à-Carcy Spoil the Ice Canoe Race?

The ice canoe race is set for Sunday 7 February 2027 at 1:00 p.m. at Pointe-à-Carcy, on the Old Port side of Quebec City, and spectators stand at Docks 19 and 21 on open concrete beside the river 13. February in Quebec City averages -16 °C overnight, and crews drag their canoes over ice floes and paddle through open water between the docks and Lévis 15. The action moves fast, and the crowd shifts along the quay to follow it.

How Do You Track the Free Shuttle to Espace Quatre Cents?

In 2026 the free shuttles between Upper Town and Espace Quatre Cents left every 30 minutes, and the Carnival linked a live-tracking page for them 4. Watching that map on your phone beats standing at a stop in the cold.

Where Do You Regroup After the Grande Allée Parade?

When the second night parade comes down Grande Allée, thousands of people leave at the same moment and the pedestrian zone fills 14 11. Share a location pin before the floats arrive, because a message saying "near the corner" will not find anyone.

Which Payments Work at the Carnival Food Stalls?

The organiser accepted cash and debit or credit cards on site in 2026, with the exception of American Express 3. Card approvals and bank app alerts need a connection, so a dead signal leaves you counting coins at a hot-chocolate stall.

When Is Quebec Winter Carnival in 2027?

Quebec Winter Carnival 2027 runs from Friday 5 February to Sunday 14 February 2027 in Quebec City, Canada 1 12. That gives ten days and two full weekends, the format the Carnival adopted for its 65th edition in 2019 6. The organiser's site lists only the date range so far; the opening ceremony time, the parade dates and the daily site hours for 2027 have not been published, so plan around the range and check carnaval.qc.ca before booking anything non-refundable 1.

The previous edition, the 72nd, ran from 6 to 15 February 2026, and its pattern is the best guide to the shape of 2027 10. Its two night parades fell on Saturday 7 February and Saturday 14 February 2026, its ice canoe race on Sunday 8 February 2026 and its musical evenings on five dates between 6 and 14 February 2026 10. If the same rhythm holds, the Saturdays of 6 and 13 February 2027 would be the big nights, but that is an expectation, not an announcement.

The date follows no lunar or religious calendar: the Carnival is simply set from late January to mid-February, as it has been since the first major winter carnival in 1894 6. The modern version began in 1955, when Bonhomme Carnaval stepped out at the Porte Saint-Louis on 9 January and the mayor handed him the keys to the city 7. The mayor still gives him the keys at the start of each Carnival 7.

  • Best days for atmosphere: the two weekends, when site hours run longest 3

  • Weekdays: shorter site hours, 12:00 to 20:00 from Monday to Wednesday in 2026 3

  • Do not rely on: third-party sites listing other dates; the organiser and the tourism listing both give 5 to 14 February 2027 1 12

Tip: Arrive by Friday afternoon if you want the opening evening, since the organiser's 2026 sites opened at 17:00 on their first Friday 3.

What Does the Bonhomme Effigy Pass Cost?

The Effigy is the official Carnival pass, the official Carnival badge, and visitors aged 13 and over need one to enter the sites; the 2027 price is still to be announced 12. The ice canoe race and the night parades are the free options, and the organiser says children aged 12 and under do not need an Effigy 3.

Last season is the best reference. In 2026 the Effigy cost CA$29 plus tax in presale until 11 January 2026 and CA$39 plus tax from 12 January to 15 February 2026 14. Groups of ten or more paid CA$36 plus tax each instead of the regular CA$39 plus tax 3. The pass came with a booklet of 18 winter coupons and was non-refundable, and a lost Effigy could not be replaced 3. In 2026 it was sold online, at participating stores around Quebec City and at the site entrances 3.

Several things cost extra on top of the Effigy 3:

  • Scotiabank ice sculpture workshops

  • Five musical evenings, including the After-Parade

  • The ice canoe race VIP package and VIP seats at the night parades

  • Rappelling down Fairmont Le Château Frontenac

  • The St-Hubert snow bath

Gougoune et doudoune, the snowy playground at the Espace 400 docks, is free with the Effigy during the Carnival 3. After the Carnival ends it needs its own pass, which in 2026 was CA$15 for a day or CA$35 for the season, or CA$25 with an Effigy 3.

For the ice canoe race, the VIP package was listed at CA$86.23 plus taxes for 7 February 2027 and includes a spot on the Lomer-Gouin ferry with heated and unheated decks, an open bar and music 13. The ticketing page offers Québec City and Lévis departures for that VIP experience 2.

Tip: Buy the Effigy online before you fly, because it cannot be refunded or replaced if lost 3.

How Do You Get From Jean Lesage Airport to Grande Allée?

Take RTC route 80 or route 76 from Québec City Jean Lesage International Airport, which sits about 15 km from downtown 16. Route 80 goes to Saint-Roch with connections to Old Québec, and route 76 goes to the Sainte-Foy bus and train stations, both leaving every 30 minutes 16. The RTC listed CA$4.00 per ride in exact change in October 2026, and a taxi to the city centre at a flat CA$41.40 16. The airport has a currency exchange counter opposite the airline check-in desks, useful if you land with euros or dollars and need Canadian dollars for tickets 20.

Quebec Winter Carnival 2027 is centred on two sites in the Upper Town: the Zone Loto-Québec at Place de l'Assemblée-Nationale, which holds Bonhomme's Ice Palace, and Place George-V with its snow and ice sculptures 10 12. Both sit in the Upper Town district around Grande Allée, the avenue running west from the Porte Saint-Louis. A third site, Gougoune et doudoune, was at the Espace 400 docks in 2026 10. The organiser has not yet published a 2027 site map 1.

The Plains of Abraham are part of the same neighbourhood. This 103-hectare city park receives about 4 million visitors a year, and its Major Events Site has hosted the Carnival's snow sculpture contest and a family zone with sliding, dog sledding and snow rafting 17. The Carnival's own history records an outdoor stage on the Plains in 2010, the Ice Palace at Place Desjardins on the Plains in 2012 and Bonhomme's Winterland settling there in 2015 6. Place d'Youville, at the foot of Old Quebec's walls, is where the Carnival's 2026 accessibility guide places both a drop-off point and reserved parking 11.

  • From the airport: RTC 80 or 76, or a taxi, then walk or change for Grande Allée 16

  • From other cities: Gare du Palais, in Lower Town, serves trains and long-distance buses 16

  • From Lévis: the ferry sails on the hour and half-hour by day, every hour at night, 365 days a year 16

  • Reduced mobility: drop-offs include the corner of D'Auteuil Street and Grande Allée 11

Note: Visitors from visa-exempt countries who fly in need an eTA, which costs CA$7, and most applications are approved within minutes 18.

How Does the Programme Build From the Keys Ceremony to the Last Sunday?

The 2027 programme has not been published, but the structure is stable: Bonhomme receives the keys of the city, the Ice Palace opens, two night parades and the musical evenings spread over ten days, and the ice canoe race falls on the first Sunday 1 7 13. In 2026 the Carnival's own press release listed four main sites, five musical evenings, four ice bars and two night parades 10.

Bonhomme's Ice Palace. The Palace is built from ice blocks in the Loto-Québec Zone, and each room carried a Quebec legend in 2026, including La Chasse-Galerie, Rose Latulippe and the legend of Montmorency Falls 5 10. It requires an Effigy 3.

Night parades. The 2026 parades were on Saturday 7 February at 17:30 on 3rd Avenue in Limoilou and Saturday 14 February at 19:00 on Grande Allée, with more than 300 local performers 10 14. VIP tickets added a reserved stand seat, a polar blanket and drink service 14.

Sculptures, bars and the snow bath. About 40 snow and ice sculptures stood at the Scotiabank Sculpture Garden in 2026, and four ice bars served the Carnival Hot Toddy in ice glasses 10 14. The snow bath, first held in 1987, asks visitors to plunge into an outdoor snowbank in swimsuits and snow boots 5 6.

Bonhomme himself. Bonhomme Carnaval stands 7 feet tall and weighs 400 pounds of packed snow, and he wears a red tuque and the arrow sash that Quebec designated intangible heritage in 2016 6 7. The Carnival trumpet can reach up to 114 decibels, so you will hear the parade before you see it 6. In 2026 he also visited a bistro beside the Ice Palace several times a day, a chance to meet him out of the wind 14.

Rappelling from the Château. In 2026 the descent down Fairmont Le Château Frontenac ran from 12 to 15 February and cost extra 3 10.

Tip: Plan the parade night around the cold. Arrive early, stay at the front only if you have thermal layers, and treat the After-Parade musical evening as your warm-up afterwards 10.

The ice canoe race is the one fixed point of the 2027 calendar: Sunday 7 February 2027 at 1:00 p.m. at Pointe-à-Carcy, Docks 19 and 21, with free viewing 13. Four categories race: Open Elite, Women's Elite, Mixed Elite and Sport 5. In 1958 only 4 of 21 teams finished, a figure that explains why the crowd follows every crew 6.

How Cold Does Quebec City Get in Early February?

Early February in Quebec City averages a high of -6 °C and a low of -16 °C, with about 63 cm of snow and 13 mm of rain across the month 15. January is colder still, with an average high of -8 °C, a low of -18 °C and about 73 cm of snow 15. Sunny days feel a little warmer, and more snowstorms are possible 15. Quebec Winter Carnival 2027 falls in the first half of February, so the outdoor sites should sit near those averages 15.

The organiser's 2026 guide says activities continue during snow showers unless conditions are unsafe, so do not cancel a day for snow alone 3. The same guide says the Carnival has a heated zone and a toddlers' zone with a nursing area 3.

What to wear, from the organiser's own dressing guide 9:

  • Base layer: merino wool or thermal polyester underlayers

  • Coat: a long cut reaching the upper thighs, insulated, windproof and waterproof

  • Accessories: a thick scarf, a wool hat and warm gloves

  • Footwear: waterproof, insulated boots with non-slip soles; laced hiking styles suit well

  • Legs: snow pants for outdoor activities

Québec City Tourism suggests the three-layer rule for outdoor play 15. Ice canoe race day means standing still on open quays at Pointe-à-Carcy beside the river, so dress for the lower end of that range 13 15.

The organiser's list of prohibited items affects what you carry: alcohol, chairs, glass or metal containers, large camping backpacks and drones are all banned, while snacks and non-alcoholic drinks are allowed outside the food service areas 3. Smoking is banned on all sites and pets are not allowed except assistance dogs 3.

Tip: Keep a spare pair of gloves and a small power bank in an inside pocket; batteries drain fast at -16 °C 15.

Which Quebec City Neighbourhood Suits a Carnival Stay Best?

Stay in the Upper Town of Old Quebec or along Grande Allée if you want to walk to the Carnival sites, and choose Saint-Roch or Sainte-Foy if you want a direct airport bus 10 16. The Zone Loto-Québec and Place George-V sit by Grande Allée, so any room within walking distance of the Porte Saint-Louis puts you close to the Ice Palace, the sculptures and the Grande Allée parade route 10 14.

The organiser lists eight partner hotels on its accommodation page, each with a reservation email, phone number and a booking link, and a separate page for 2027 discount coupons 1 8. It does not publish room rates, so compare prices yourself 8.

Each area offers something different:

  • Upper Town, Old Quebec: inside the walls, with Place d'Youville, the Porte Saint-Louis and Fairmont Le Château Frontenac on foot 11 16

  • Grande Allée: best for the Loto-Québec Zone and the Grande Allée parade route; a pedestrian zone applied there when it was not a weekday in 2026 11

  • Lower Town and Gare du Palais: the train and bus terminal sits here, within walking distance for many Old Quebec visitors 16

  • Saint-Roch: served by RTC route 80 from the airport 16

  • Sainte-Foy: hotels near Boulevard Laurier, a short taxi ride from Gare de Sainte-Foy, served by RTC route 76 16

Lévis, across the river, is the other option, and the ferry sails every day of the year 16. The canoe race VIP experience is offered from both the Québec City and Lévis docks 2.

Book as soon as you settle your dates. The weekend of 5 to 7 February 2027 holds the opening Friday and the ice canoe race on Sunday 7 February 2027, so it is the likeliest weekend to fill 1 13.

Tip: Ask any hotel whether it participates in the Carnival's 2027 coupon programme before you pay 8.

Will Your Phone Keep Signal on Grande Allée on Parade Night?

Do not count on a fast connection on Grande Allée at the peak of the night parade, and sort out mobile data before you fly. Quebec Winter Carnival 2027 puts two night parades and several musical evenings into ten days, and on those evenings thousands of phones share the same mobile cells 10.

A Canada eSIM installed at home runs as a data line beside your own SIM, so your maps and tickets work from the moment you land at Jean Lesage Airport 16.

The pattern that matters is timing, not distance. Between the Ice Palace queue and the walk to Place George-V you are in a dense crowd for hours, and a message can arrive late when the network is congested. Send your meeting point before the parade starts, not during it, and agree a fallback such as a corner you can both find without a map.

What you will use data for:

  • Shuttle tracking: the free shuttle had a live tracking page in 2026 4

  • VIP bookings: the ice canoe race ferry experience is sold on the ticketing page, and parade VIP seats were offered in 2026 2 14

  • Group calls: share a location pin for regrouping after the Grande Allée parade 14

  • Emergency calls: Canada's emergency number is 911 for police, fire or ambulance 19

Tip: Download an offline map of Quebec City at the hotel, so you are not loading it with cold fingers on Grande Allée.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, watching from Pointe-à-Carcy, on Docks 19 and 21, is free, and the race is set for Sunday 7 February 2027 at 1:00 p.m. 13. The only paid option is the VIP package, listed at CA$86.23 plus taxes, which gives you a spot on the Lomer-Gouin ferry with heated decks, an open bar and music 13. Both Québec City and Lévis versions are sold on the ticketing page 2.

No, the organiser says the Effigy is not required for children aged 12 and under, while the 2027 listing says the pass is required from age 13 3 12. The 2027 price has not been announced. In 2026 the Effigy cost CA$29 plus tax in presale and CA$39 plus tax in regular sale, and it was non-refundable 14 3. Check carnaval.qc.ca before you buy for a family.

No chairs and no alcohol: the organiser's 2026 list of prohibited items included alcohol, chairs, glass or metal containers, large camping backpacks, selfie sticks, tripods and drones 3. Snacks and non-alcoholic drinks were allowed, but not inside food service areas. Pets were not allowed either, except assistance dogs, and smoking was banned on all sites 3. Carry non-alcoholic drinks in plastic, not glass or metal.

No, rappelling down the hotel was a separate ticketed activity in 2026, not covered by the Effigy 3. It ran from 12 to 15 February 2026, 10 14. The organiser has not yet published whether it returns in 2027, so look at the ticketing page before you plan a trip around it 1.

Yes, the organiser says activities continue during snow showers unless conditions are unsafe 3. February in Quebec City averages about 63 cm of snow, so snowfall is normal rather than exceptional 15. Dress for it and budget extra time to get between sites, since pavements near Grande Allée stay slippery after a storm.

Install it at home, a day or two before you fly, so the line is ready when you land at Jean Lesage Airport. Scan the QR code on Wi-Fi, then switch the line on after landing. Data helps with the free shuttle tracking page, VIP bookings on the ticketing page and group location pins on parade night 4 2.
