When Is Qingming Festival in 2027?
Qingming Festival 2027 falls on Monday 5 April 2027. The public holiday in mainland China is expected to run from Saturday 3 April to Monday 5 April, three days; the State Council usually confirms the holiday calendar in November or December of the previous year, so treat the exact days off as provisional until then. Hong Kong observes Ching Ming as a public holiday on 5 April 2027 too.
Qingming is one of the few Chinese festivals that does not follow the lunar calendar. It is a solar term, the fifteenth day after the spring equinox, which pins it to 4 or 5 April on the Western calendar every year: 4 April in 2025, 5 April in 2026 and 2027, 4 April in 2028. The name means "pure brightness", the clear, bright weather of early April, and the festival has been observed for around 2,500 years, formalised as a one-day holiday by the Tang emperor Xuanzong in 732 and made a statutory public holiday in the People's Republic in 2008.
What the dates mean for a traveller:
Tomb sweeping is not confined to 5 April. Families visit graves across roughly the ten days before and after Qingming, so you will see ceremonies in cemeteries and on hillsides from late March to mid-April, with the biggest crowds on the holiday weekend itself
The holiday weekend of 3 to 5 April is a domestic travel peak: scenic spots, trains and hotels are full, and prices rise
Related spring events cluster around the same weeks: the Kaifeng Qingming Cultural Festival in early April 1 to April 10, 2027, the Yellow Emperor ancestor worship ceremony at Xinzheng near Zhengzhou on the third day of the third lunar month (expected around 8 April 2027), and kite festivals in cities such as Weifang in mid-April
The day before Qingming is the old Cold Food Festival (Hanshi), when fires were traditionally not lit and only cold food eaten; that is where the green qingtuan dumplings come from, and in Shanxi and parts of the north you will still find cold-food customs on 4 April.
Tip: For the ceremonies, be in a city with historic cemeteries or a famous ancestral site on the morning of 5 April; for the festival atmosphere, go to Kaifeng for the holiday weekend and stay a day either side to avoid the worst of the crowds.
