What Is Lost When Bali's Mobile Data Goes Dark for a Day?

Nyepi is the one day of the year when Bali asks everyone, including visitors, to disappear indoors, and it is also the one day when your phone may stop being a phone. In 2026 a ministerial circular asked operators to switch off mobile data and IPTV in Bali from 06:00 WITA on 19 March to 06:00 WITA on 20 March 6. Calls and SMS were expected to keep working, and home and fibre Wi-Fi stayed on so that hospitals, police posts and fire stations could run 7.

That makes the hours before the silence the busy part. On Pengrupukan evening you will be moving around a crowded village or town centre at dusk, trying to find the Ogoh-Ogoh route, message your group and book the last ride home, while road closures shift by the hour. Once the silence starts at 06:00 you can still reach people through hotel Wi-Fi, but a cellular map, a ride app or a translation tool will not help you outside. Everything you need for the day, from tickets and boarding passes to offline maps and your hotel's contact, has to be loaded in advance.

Why Download Offline Maps Before the Ogoh-Ogoh Parade?

Ogoh-Ogoh routes change from banjar to banjar, and the roads around the parade are closed to cars by dusk. A map that is already stored on your phone keeps working when a packed street stops the signal, and it lets you walk back to your hotel before the 06:00 silence begins.

Why Rebook Flights Before Ngurah Rai Closes?

In 2026 the airport operator listed 440 cancelled flights, 231 domestic and 209 international, for the closure window 4. If your airline moves you, the change arrives by app or email, so mobile data on 7 March matters more than on any other day.

Why Keep Wi-Fi Calling Ready in Your Hotel Room?

Cellular data may be off but hotel Wi-Fi usually works, so messaging apps and Wi-Fi calling become your link home during the quiet day. Test your apps on the property network the evening before, because staff are on reduced duty and may not be able to reset a router quickly.

When Is Nyepi in 2027?

Nyepi 2027 falls on Monday 8 March 2027, the Saka New Year 1949, confirmed in the joint ministerial decree on national holidays published by the Indonesian State Secretariat (accessed 2026-10-15) 1. The evening before, Sunday 7 March 2027, is when the Ogoh-Ogoh parades are expected, because the procession always takes place on the eve of Nyepi 11. Ngembak Geni, the first day of normal life, is expected on Tuesday 9 March 2027 2.

One source, the English Wikipedia article, lists 9 March for 2027. The national decree says 8 March, and Wikipedia is the outlier, so plan around 8 March 1 2. I could not find a 2027 calendar from the Bali Provincial Government or PHDI Bali (the Hindu council) in the sources checked, so the exact hour of the silence is based on the 2026 pattern.

Nyepi moves each year because it follows the Balinese Saka lunar calendar, not the Gregorian one. It always comes the day after the Tilem Kesanga new moon, which is why the date drifts across March and early April. The 2026 edition was on 19 March, and 2025 fell on 29 March, which shows how far it can travel 2.

2027 has a complication: the national holiday for Idul Fitri is set for 10 and 11 March 2027, with collective leave on 9 March 1. Ngembak Geni therefore overlaps a long Indonesian holiday, and ferries, flights and hotels will be fuller than usual. The decree notes that the final Eid dates will be set by the Minister of Religious Affairs, so keep your bookings flexible 1.

  • Eve of Nyepi (Pengrupukan): Ogoh-Ogoh parades at dusk, expected Sunday 7 March 2027 11.

  • Nyepi day: Monday 8 March 2027, silence from about 06:00 WITA 1 4.

  • Ngembak Geni: Tuesday 9 March 2027, silence ends at about 06:00 WITA 2.

Think of the three days as a single block rather than one holiday date. The first day is loud, busy and full of movement, the second is empty and silent, and the third is slow and domestic, as families visit each other to forgive and share a meal 2. A traveller who treats only the 8th as special usually arrives on the 7th with no plan for the parade and leaves on the 9th with no seat on a plane. Writing all three dates into your calendar before you book is the simplest fix.

Tip: Treat 7 to 9 March 2027 as three fixed days for Bali. Book flights out for 9 March or later, never for the 8th.

What Do the Four Catur Brata Penyepian Rules Ask of Visitors?

Nyepi has no ticket and no entry fee, because it is a Hindu religious day that happens inside every home on the island, not a show. What you pay is obedience to the Catur Brata Penyepian, the four restrictions that apply to everyone in Bali, including tourists 3.

  • Amati Geni: no fire and no light, which includes cooking and, in practice, bright electric light 3.

  • Amati Karya: no work or physical activity, apart from spiritual practice 3.

  • Amati Lelungan: no travel and no leaving the house or compound 3.

  • Amati Lelanguan: no entertainment or self-indulgence, so no loud music or parties 3.

The people who enforce this are the Pecalang, the traditional village security officers who wear black and white checked cloth and patrol the empty streets. They do not fine visitors in the way a police officer would, but they will send you back indoors, and there are no formal legal penalties for tourists under one widely read travel guide 3. Respect is expected, and ignoring them is the quickest way to cause offence.

In practice, guests can walk inside hotel gardens and use the pool where the property allows it, but the beach, the street and the car park are outside the line. A 2026 report on the Day of Silence described visitors moving around hotel grounds while staying quiet, with hotels offering food prepared in advance 8. Emergencies are the exception: hospitals keep running, and medical flights can still be authorised at the airport 3 4.

The reason the rules apply to visitors is that Nyepi is meant to give the island a day with no activity, so the spirits find nothing to disturb and leave. Balinese Hindus fast, meditate and reflect through the day, and a visitor who plays music by the pool undoes the point of that effort for the neighbours around the property 3. It helps to see the stay as a hosted retreat: the village has arranged the quiet, and your part is simply to be part of it. Many guests report that the day is calmer and more memorable than expected once the first restless hours pass.

Tip: Ask your hotel before the 7th how it handles evening lighting. Outdoor lighting is limited at many properties, and curtains keep a bright room from being seen from outside.

How Do You Reach Bali When Ngurah Rai Airport Shuts for 24 Hours?

Ngurah Rai International Airport in Denpasar stops all commercial flights for 24 hours at Nyepi, so you reach Bali before the closure or after it. For 2027 the closure is expected to run from 06:00 WITA on 8 March to 06:00 WITA on 9 March, following the 2026 pattern 4.

The 2026 closure was published as NOTAM A0096 by AirNav Indonesia and covered 06:00 WITA on 19 March to 06:00 WITA on 20 March 4. The last domestic departure left at 23:10 WITA on 18 March, and the last international departure at 01:30 WITA on 19 March 4. The first international arrival after reopening landed at 07:05 WITA on 20 March, and the first domestic departure was at 07:00 WITA 4. Expect the equivalent times in 2027 to shift only slightly.

Emergency and medical flights may still be authorised, and airport staff stand by for them, but ordinary passengers cannot count on it 4.

The airport is not the only gate. In 2026 the Gilimanuk ferry between Bali and Java closed at 05:00 WITA on 19 March and reopened at 06:00 WITA on 20 March 5. The Mengwi bus terminal limited departures on the day before and stopped operating during Nyepi 5. Assume the same pattern in 2027 and do not plan to leave by land or sea on 8 March.

  • Land in Bali by the evening of Saturday 6 March 2027 at the latest, so a delay does not strand you on the wrong side of the closure.

  • Do not book any flight into or out of Denpasar on 8 March 2027.

  • If you need to be in Bali on 9 March 2027, aim for the first flights after 06:00 WITA, and check with your airline, since services return gradually 5.

Tip: The Nyepi week is also close to the Idul Fitri holiday, so first flights on 9 March will be crowded. Arrive at the airport early.

What Happens From Melasti to Ngembak Geni?

The Nyepi cycle runs for about a week, from the sea ritual of Melasti to the forgiveness day of Ngembak Geni, and only one of those days is silent. The sequence is the same every year; the dates move.

  1. Melasti: a few days before Nyepi, temple processions carry sacred objects to the sea to be purified, usually three to four days before Nyepi at seaside temples 2 3. Beaches such as Kuta, Sanur and Nusa Dua fill with villagers in white.

  2. Tawur Kesanga (Pengrupukan): on the evening before Nyepi, communities make offerings to chase away spirits, then parade Ogoh-Ogoh 2.

  3. Ogoh-Ogoh parade: giant demon effigies of bamboo and papier-mache, some reaching 8 metres, are carried through the streets to gamelan music and noise, with many burned afterwards 3.

  4. Nyepi: silence for 24 hours, from 06:00 to 06:00 WITA in 2026 4.

  5. Ngembak Geni: the next morning families visit each other, forgive and cook again 2.

The Ogoh-Ogoh, whose name means to shake, represent the Bhuta-Kala, the negative forces of the island 10. They first appeared in Denpasar in the early 1980s, and the custom has since spread across the villages 10. Notable parade spots are Kuta, Seminyak, Ubud, Nusa Dua and Sanur, but many neighbourhoods run their own, so ask at your hotel where tonight's banjar parade will form 3.

By late afternoon on Pengrupukan the crowds thicken and the traffic stops. Expect the noise to rise toward sunset, since the idea is to make as much of it as possible before the quiet begins. The parade timing for 2027 is expected on the evening of 7 March 2027, but exact start times differ by village 11.

Tip: Watch from the roadside and keep your distance from the carriers. The platforms are heavy and the bearers are often young men running.

What Is Bali's Weather Like on the Night of the Ogoh-Ogoh Parade?

The Ogoh-Ogoh parade falls in March, at the tail of the Bali wet season, so expect warm, humid air and the chance of an evening shower. I could not find a sourced temperature or rainfall figure for 7 March 2027, so check a forecast in the days before and treat the weather as a reason to carry a light rain jacket.

Dusk is the key time. The parades form in the late afternoon, begin around sunset and run late into the night, in the words of one 2026 guide 3. The crowd peaks as the first effigies leave their village hall, and the roads near the biggest processions are closed to vehicles. Arrive on foot or by a short scooter ride, and do not plan to drive into the centre.

Crowd levels are high at the bigger town parades and lower in a smaller village. If you want to photograph the effigies without a crush, pick a quieter banjar parade a few kilometres from Kuta, Seminyak or Sanur. Villagers there are used to curious visitors and usually welcome them respectfully.

Nyepi day itself is likely to be hot indoors, since many properties keep air conditioning to a minimum and the lights stay low. Lay out water and a hand fan the evening before.

  • Wear light clothing that you can move in; a sarong helps if you join a temple procession.
  • Closed-toe shoes protect your feet when the burning effigies drop ash and bamboo.
  • Bring a small torch for the evening of the silence, kept switched off unless there is an emergency.

Note: The silence starts at dawn. The unusual part for many visitors is the dark, because with fire and artificial light restricted the island goes dark and the sky fills with stars 10.

Plan the evening around that darkness. Candles, cooking fires and bright screens count as light under Amati Geni, so eat before sunset, keep curtains drawn and use a phone torch only when you truly need it. Villagers treat the dark as part of the observance, and a hotel terrace lit like a stage is the most common thing the Pecalang remark on when they pass a property. Quiet conversation indoors is fine, and many guests simply read, sleep or meditate until the silence lifts the next morning at about 06:00 WITA 3.

Which Bali Hotel Rules Apply to Guests on Nyepi Day?

Hotels stay open on Nyepi but guests must remain inside the property, and most operate reduced services. A 2026 resort guide told guests to remain within their accommodation or resort area and follow resort guidance, with essential operations continuing 9.

Outside restaurants, cafes and beach clubs are closed, while in-resort dining may be available 9. Cable TV may be unavailable, even at resorts, so bring something to read or watch offline 9. Many properties offer Nyepi packages with indoor activities and meals, and pool use and outdoor lighting are limited, according to one 2026 guide 3.

Arrivals and departures on Nyepi day generally cannot be accommodated because airport and transport access is shut 9. That means your stay should span the whole 7 to 9 March 2027 window, and you should confirm check-in the evening of the 7th.

Villas follow the same rules. If you are in a private villa with no restaurant, stock up on food, water and basics the day before, since nothing is delivered 3.

  • Ask the front desk what meals are included and whether there is a Nyepi menu.
  • Ask how late reception can help with Wi-Fi.
  • Reserve your return transfer for 9 March, not the 8th.
  • Bring offline entertainment; mobile data may be off.

As for where to stay, the places most used to hosting Nyepi guests are the hotel zones of Nusa Dua, Sanur and Seminyak, plus the Ubud valleys, where a villa pool is a good place to sit out the silence. Book these areas early because the 7 to 9 March window also overlaps with the Idul Fitri holiday 1.

Will Your Mobile Data Work in Bali on Nyepi?

Mobile data is expected to be off across Bali for the 24 hours of Nyepi in 2027, because the shutdown has been repeated every year since 2018 12. In 2019 the provincial government ordered mobile providers to shut down for the day, with an exception for essential public services 13.

In 2026 the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs circular number 2 asked operators to stop mobile data and IPTV from 06:00 WITA to 06:00 WITA 6. The ministry circular was an appeal, not a total shutdown of the network, and it did not apply to vital sites that need internet for operations and security 6. Bali's communications office said that household Wi-Fi would stay on and that it would not diminish the spiritual essence of Nyepi 7.

Hotel Wi-Fi generally keeps working but is not guaranteed 3 9. Voice calls and SMS were expected to continue 7.

For you, the plan is simple. Load everything you need before 06:00 on 8 March 2027: offline maps, boarding passes, hotel confirmation and any messages you want to read. If you travel with a Indonesia eSIM, install it before you fly so that the mobile line is ready the moment data returns on 9 March, but do not count on it during the silence itself.

  • Download offline Google or Apple Maps for Bali.

  • Save boarding passes and hotel details as PDFs.

  • Tell family you will be offline on the day.

  • Test hotel Wi-Fi the night before.

Tip: Switch your phone to airplane mode with Wi-Fi on to save battery and stop roaming alerts.

Frequently asked questions

Nyepi 2027 falls on Monday 8 March 2027 according to the Indonesian national holiday decree published by the State Secretariat 1. A Wikipedia entry lists 9 March, but that is the day after the silence ends and conflicts with the decree 2. Plan to be inside your hotel on 8 March and treat the 9th as Ngembak Geni.

No, visitors are expected to stay on hotel or villa grounds for the full 24 hours of Nyepi. Pecalang, the village security guards, patrol the empty streets and will send anyone outside back indoors. One widely used guide says there are no formal legal penalties for tourists, but respect for the tradition is firmly expected 3. Hospitals stay open for emergencies.

The Ogoh-Ogoh parades start around sunset and run late into the night on the eve of Nyepi, which is expected to be Sunday 7 March 2027 3 11. Exact start times differ by village and by banjar, so ask your hotel which procession is closest. Roads near the biggest parades close to traffic by dusk, so go on foot.

Ngurah Rai International Airport stops all regular commercial flights for 24 hours. In 2026 the closure ran from 06:00 WITA on 19 March to 06:00 WITA on 20 March and affected 440 scheduled flights 4. Emergency and medical flights can still operate if authorised, and airport staff remain on standby for them 4.

No, restaurants, cafes, beach clubs and shops outside your property are closed on Nyepi day, and only in-resort dining may be available at some hotels 9. Private villas have no kitchen service, so buy food and water the day before. Ngembak Geni, the next day, is when restaurants and shops begin to reopen gradually 2.

None on the day itself, because mobile data was switched off across Bali for 24 hours in 2026 and is expected to be again in 2027 6. Hotel Wi-Fi usually keeps working. Load maps and documents beforehand and use an eSIM only for the days around the silence, when the network is on.
