What Does a Dead Phone Cost You on the Sangam Sand on 6 February?

Mauni Amavasya in Prayagraj is the day the whole mela moves in one direction. On the same day in 2026, officials expected around 3 crore people, which is 30 million, at the Sangam area, after about 1.5 crore had bathed the day before 5. For 2027 the Mela Authority has planned eight sectors across 925 hectares, with 1,152 CCTV cameras watching the crowds 2. Inside that, your group is a handful of people in woollen shawls on grey sand.

That is where a phone earns its place. Camps in the sectors look alike from the path, ghats run for more than 3 km, and the pontoon bridges you crossed at sunrise may be the wrong ones to cross back 5. A shared live location lets you find the person who went for tea. A saved offline map shows the road to Prayagraj Junction when the lanes fill. A call to the tent city reception reaches you only if your phone still has charge and signal. Plan the mobile data before you land, not on the riverbank.

How Do You Find Your Camp Among Eight Sectors?

The 2027 mela is planned in eight sectors, up from seven in 2026 2 4. Sector numbers, not street names, are the address. Save the camp's pin, a photo of its gate and the host's number before the first bath, because sand paths change when tents go up.

Can You Book a Train Out of Prayagraj on a Bathing Day?

Indian Railways expects over 20 crore devotees and plans extra ticket counters, automatic ticket vending machines and special Mela trains 1. Book the return seat on the app weeks ahead, then keep the e-ticket and the PNR saved offline for the Junction gate.

Where Is Your Group Once the Pontoon Bridges Fill Up?

The Public Works Department has nine pontoon bridges in its 2027 tender list, two of them on the Arail side 3. Temporary bridges are often one-way in the crowd 20. Agree a meeting point on the near bank in advance, and keep a messaging group live for when you are split.

When Is Magh Mela in 2027?

Magh Mela 2027 is expected to run from 14 January to 6 March 2027, a span of 52 days, according to the first preparatory meeting held by the Mela Authority 3. A railway planning note gives 15 January as the first day, so treat the opening as 14 or 15 January until the Authority publishes its notice 1. The six main bathing days are consistent across reports:

  • Makar Sankranti: Thursday 14 January 2027, listed as 14 or 15 January 2 3

  • Paush Purnima: Friday 22 January 2027 1 2

  • Mauni Amavasya: Saturday 6 February 2027 1 3

  • Basant Panchami: Thursday 11 February 2027 1 2

  • Maghi Purnima: Saturday 20 February 2027 1 3

  • Mahashivratri: Saturday 6 March 2027, the closing bath 1 2

Two of those fall on a Saturday, Mauni Amavasya and Maghi Purnima, which is worth planning around. The dates move because the mela mixes two calendars. Makar Sankranti follows the Sun, while Paush Purnima, Mauni Amavasya and Maghi Purnima follow the Moon. In 2026 Paush Purnima on 3 January came first and Makar Sankranti followed on 14 January, but in 2027 the order flips, so the mela opens with the Sankranti dip and Paush Purnima comes eight days later 4 7 2.

Is 2027 a Kumbh year at Prayagraj? No. The Maha Kumbh was held at Prayagraj from 13 January to 26 February 2025, and Prayagraj and Haridwar alternate six years apart 10. In 2027 the Kumbh cycle sits in Haridwar, where the Ardh Kumbh lists ten bathing dates from 14 January to 20 April 2027, and in Nashik, where the first Amrut Snan is on 2 August 2027 11 12. Prayagraj holds its usual Magh Mela 9.

Tip: For Magh Mela 2027 in Prayagraj, fix your trip around Mauni Amavasya on 6 February 2027 and decide early whether you want that peak or a quieter day beside it 1.

Does Entry to the Magh Mela Ground Cost Anything?

The published arrangements for Magh Mela describe no admission ticket for the mela ground or the ghats, so the cost of a visit is travel, a place to sleep and food 4 6. Bathing at the Sangam is a public ritual on riverbanks the administration prepares each year, with changing rooms, deep-water barricades and boatmen and divers at the ghats 6.

What you do pay for is access and comfort around the edges:

  • Parking: the 2027 plan lists 48 parking sites for 1.45 lakh vehicles, which is 145,000, up from 42 sites in 2026 2

  • Tent-city stays: rent of 7,500 to 15,000 INR in 2026, booked online 17

  • Trains: a seat to Prayagraj, booked in advance 1

  • Boats: rides out to the confluence, where the white Ganga meets the darker Yamuna, priced on the spot

  • Dana: the charity to saints and community meals that Magh Mela tradition encourages 9

Do not spend money chasing a "better" bathing spot. The administration lays the ghats out sector by sector, so a visitor can step in wherever the barricades allow.

Magh Mela 2027 will have its own Mela Authority and police notices once the plan is final, and the tent-city operator will publish booking terms separately 3. Keep any receipt for a camp stay, and agree the price and meals before you pay.

Note: Agree any boat fare before you step in, and keep small notes for it, since boat rides are priced on the spot.

How Do You Reach the Mela Ground From Prayagraj Junction?

Most visitors arrive at Prayagraj Junction (code PRYJ) on Leader Road, a station with 10 platforms that is also the headquarters of the North Central Railway zone 14. Prayagraj has 8 stations within city limits, and the Mela uses several, among them Naini, Chheoki and Subedarganj, all earmarked for upgrades before Magh Mela 2027 16 1. The railways plan temporary passenger shelters, more ticket counters and special Mela trains 1.

From the station you travel by e-rickshaw or auto as far as the traffic zones allow, then walk the last stretch. Four-wheelers were banned from the mela area from 13 January in 2026, and the 2027 plan adds parking and a second traffic line 7 2.

Distances by road from Prayagraj, as listed by the district administration 16:

  • Varanasi: 112 km 16

  • Lucknow: 183 km 16

  • Delhi: 582 km 16

  • Ayodhya: 156 km 16

The airport at Bamrauli is 12 km from the city, with limited civil service 16 20. During the 2025 Maha Kumbh it handled daily flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Bangalore 18. Buses run from the UPSRTC stands at Civil Lines and Zero Road, and the corporation deployed 3,800 buses for the 2026 mela 16 4.

For Magh Mela 2027 in Prayagraj, the city sits at 25.43583 N, 81.84639 E and the station at 25.4460 N, 81.8289 E 13 14.

Tip: If Prayagraj trains and flights are full, travel to Varanasi or Lucknow and continue by road, then leave a margin of hours for the last walk to the Sangam 16.

What Happens on a Mauni Amavasya Morning at the Sangam?

Mauni Amavasya is the third and busiest bathing day of the mela, and people reach the Sangam from the early hours of the morning 5. In 2026 about 1.5 crore people bathed the day before the main date, and officials expected around 3 crore on the day 5. The administration built ghats more than 3 km long and set up pontoon bridges, tents and security checkpoints 5.

Saints from the akharas bathe in groups, and in 2026 that included the Kinnar Akhara 5. Beyond the dip, the mela is a set of daily rites. Kalpvasis bathe in the Ganga three times a day, attend sermons and hear bhajans in the sadhus' camps 8.

The other bathing days differ in mood:

  • Makar Sankranti: the first dip, with about 15 lakh people by 8 am in 2026 7

  • Paush Purnima: the day the month-long fast and Kalpvas begin 8

  • Basant Panchami: one of three Shahi Snan days named in the 2026 arrangements 15

  • Maghi Purnima: about 1.5 crore had bathed by noon in 2026, and arrivals began at midnight 6

  • Mahashivratri: the closing bath on 6 March 2027 1

On Maghi Purnima in 2026, around 5 lakh kalpvasis ended their month and families came to take them home 6. In 2027 that is Saturday 20 February 1.

Tip: For Mauni Amavasya on 6 February 2027, walk to the ghat in the dark, bathe, and be out of the packed lanes by mid-morning; the people who leave late are the ones who get stuck 5.

How Cold Does Prayagraj Get in January and February?

Prayagraj in January has an average daily high of 22.6 °C and a low of 9.2 °C, and in February the high rises to 27.6 °C with a low of 12.7 °C, according to the IMD 1991–2020 normals 13. Rainfall is light, about 17.0 mm in January and 17.6 mm in February 13. Those averages hide the dawn, which on the sand is far colder than the afternoon.

On Magh Purnima, 1 February 2026, a cold wave and dense morning fog hung over the ghats 6. Expect the same pattern in the first half of the mela, when the sun comes late to the riverbank and the afternoons are mild.

What to pack for the Sangam in January and February:

  • A wool shawl or jacket you can take off after the dip

  • A towel and dry clothes in a plastic-free bag, since the area bans plastic and non-biodegradable materials 15

  • Slip-on shoes you can leave at the ghat, plus warm socks for the walk back

  • A power bank, as the cold drains phone batteries quickly

Camps burn lamps and heaters at night, and two fires in January 2026 destroyed tents in Sectors 4 and 5 7. Keep exits clear, and never leave a lit lamp in a tent.

Tip: Later dates are warmer. The February bathing days, Basant Panchami on 11 February 2027 and Maghi Purnima on 20 February 2027, are easier on cold-sensitive travellers than Makar Sankranti in mid-January 1 13.

How Much Does a Tent-City Stay Cost Near the Sangam?

A tent-city stay near the Sangam cost 7,500 to 15,000 INR in the 2026 edition, according to the state tourism corporation's project head 17. That tent city sat on the Arail side of the Sangam and offered 12 premium, 12 luxury and 30 deluxe tents, 54 in all, modelled on the Kumbh 2025 camp 17. Bookings were online through the corporation's website 17.

The camp offered attached bathrooms with hot water, heating, sattvic vegetarian food, a yagyashala for havan and a walking track 17. For Magh Mela 2027, the corporation has not published tent categories or rates, so treat the 2026 range as a guide only 17.

Cheaper options exist. Most city hotels are in the Civil Lines area, and free dharamshalas are in Daraganj and Kydganj 20. Many ashrams and spiritual groups run their own camps in the sectors, and kalpvasis live in them for the month 9.

How to choose:

  • Tent city on the Arail bank: closest to the Sangam, comfortable, the highest price

  • Civil Lines: the usual hotel area, a short ride from Prayagraj Junction 20

  • Dharamshala near Daraganj: the lowest cost, plain rooms 20

  • Ashram camps: for those with an invitation from a group

Book as soon as your dates are firm, and especially for the Saturday of Mauni Amavasya on 6 February 2027, when the whole region travels 1.

Tip: Ask any tent camp which sector it is in and how far the nearest pontoon bridge is before paying; the walk can decide the whole trip.

Will Your Phone Signal Survive the Sangam Crowds on Bathing Days?

Signal on the riverbank depends on temporary towers that operators install each season, and crowds on bathing days test them. For the 2025 Maha Kumbh, telecom operators laid about 192 km of optical fibre in the mela area and deployed 78 cells on wheels and 150 outdoor small-cell units 19. Airtel, BSNL, Jio and Vi ran three joint disaster management centres in the mela 19. No such figures are published yet for Magh Mela 2027.

The Mela Authority also leans on data. The 2027 plan lists 1,152 CCTV cameras, up from about 400, and officials in 2026 promised real-time navigation apps, online maps of ghats and camps and emergency helplines 2 15. Those tools only help you if your phone works.

Set up before you travel:

  • Install an eSIM before you fly, so your phone has data on arrival at Prayagraj Junction

  • Download an offline map of Prayagraj and screenshot your camp's address

  • Save your train e-ticket and tent-city booking offline

  • Carry a power bank for the cold, since batteries drain faster at dawn

A data plan for India, such as eSIM for India, works as a backup if the crowds slow your home SIM.

Tip: Send your live location to a friend before the dawn walk to the ghat; texts and calls are the first things to jam when 3 crore people share a few towers 5.

What Does a Month of Kalpvas Involve?

Kalpvas is the practice of spending the whole month of Magh at the Sangam in prayer, and those who observe it are called kalpvasis 9. They live in tents or temporary huts on the riverbank for the month and give up comforts. Scripture sets about 21 rules in addition to the fast before the Maghi Purnima dip 8.

The rules include:

  • Bathing in the Ganga three times a day

  • Growing a tulsi plant in the camp

  • Eating one meal a day, cooked by oneself or one's spouse

  • Sleeping on the ground and avoiding gold, sweets and fruit

  • Attending sermons and giving up luxuries 8

Kalpvasis begin after worshipping Lord Vishnu and the Shaligram stone, and the diet is sattvic, meaning fresh and simply prepared 8. Paush Purnima is the traditional start, which in 2027 is Friday 22 January 8 1. The Kalpvas ends with the Maghi Purnima dip, and in 2026 about 5 lakh kalpvasis ended their stay that way 6.

Visitors can learn a great deal by walking quietly through the camps. Saints give discourses and communities share meals, as the festival has always combined learning, charity and trade 9. The entire fair area was declared a Zero Animal Zone for the first time in 2026 1.

Etiquette matters here. Ask before you photograph a camp or a person bathing, keep your voice low near the worship tents and do not wander into a kalpvasi's hut. Remove shoes where others have, and carry your waste out; the mela bans plastic 15.

Tip: Visit the camps in the afternoon, after the morning crush, when kalpvasis rest and are glad to talk.

How Do You Stay Safe in the Sangam Crowds?

On 29 January 2025, Mauni Amavasya at the Maha Kumbh, a crowd crush killed at least 30 people at the festival grounds 18. That is the reason the administration now treats Mauni Amavasya as the risk day, and it is why you should plan your own exit before you go in.

The 2026 arrangements are the best guide to what to expect. Officials ordered no VIP protocol on major bathing days, so the common devotee is not held up 15. AI-based cameras track crowd movement, and mounted police, water police and RAF personnel were deployed 7. SDRF and NDRF teams, boatmen and divers covered the ghats, and two 20-bed hospitals ran in the mela 6 4.

For 2027 the plan adds more:

  • Police posts proposed to rise from 42 to 50

  • Women's help desks from 16 to 18 and cyber help desks to 17

  • Fire personnel from 17 to 19 2

Pickpockets work the crowds. Keep valuables in an inside pocket, stay alert near the station, bridges and riverbanks, drink bottled water, and carry anti-diarrhoea medicine 20.

The crowd rules are simple. Walk with the flow, do not stop on a bridge, hold small children by the hand, and leave the ghat when you have bathed. Women should keep a companion in the dark hours 20.

Tip: On Mauni Amavasya, decide where the group meets if you are separated, and never try to push back against the flow of people.

Frequently asked questions

Mauni Amavasya is the main bathing day, and in 2027 it falls on Saturday 6 February 2027 1 3. In 2026 about 1.5 crore people bathed the day before the main date, and officials expected around 3 crore on the day itself 5. If you want fewer people, bathe on the day before or after.

No. Prayagraj hosts its usual annual Magh Mela from 14 January to 6 March 2027, planned across 925 hectares in eight sectors 2 3. The Kumbh cycle in 2027 sits at Haridwar, with its Ardh Kumbh listing bathing dates from 14 January to 20 April 2027, and at Nashik, where the first Amrut Snan is on 2 August 2027 11 12.

Magh Mela 2026 began on Paush Purnima, 3 January 2026, and ended on Mahashivratri, 15 February 2026 4 6. Its main bathing days were Makar Sankranti on 14 January, Mauni Amavasya on 18 January, Basant Panchami on 23 January, and Maghi Purnima on 1 February 2026 4.

Kalpvasis end their month at the Maghi Purnima dip, which in 2027 falls on Saturday 20 February 2027 1. In 2026 about 5 lakh kalpvasis ended their Kalpvas on Maghi Purnima, and families came to take them home 6. Expect heavy traffic around the ghats and the station that day.

Not all the way. Four-wheelers were banned from the mela area from 13 January in 2026, and visitors parked at designated sites and walked or took shuttles 7. The 2027 plan lists 48 parking sites with room for 1.45 lakh vehicles, so plan to park outside the mela area and walk the last stretch 2.

Plan for more than a normal trip, since maps, live location, train tickets and video calls all run on data. Signal can drop on peak bathing days, when crowds reach the crores 5. Install a data plan before you fly and download offline maps, so a weak signal does not strand you.
