Finding your group on the Berg at the opening Thursday

On the opening Thursday the Burgberg fills from mid-afternoon, because the barrel tapping at the Henninger-Keller is at 17:00 2. The festival draws about one million visitors over twelve days 3, and the cellars sit in a long line from Entla's Keller in the west to Birkners Keller in the east 7. That layout is the problem: a friend who says "I am at the cellar with the long tables" could be 400 metres away, with chestnut canopy and music in between.

A working connection lets a group share a live location pin, send a photo of the nearest cellar sign and agree a meeting point before the crowd thickens. The grounds are also where trains home are decided. Check the last service to Nuremberg before the last round, not after it. A phone with data turns the Berg from a maze into a set of named stops, and it keeps working at 22:00 when the paths are shoulder to shoulder and a spoken plan stops being reliable.

Booking a table at a cellar from your phone

Many cellars take table reservations through their own booking pages, while a few handle them by phone or email only 11. Plans change on the day, so being able to open the booking page, confirm a time and show the confirmation at the entrance saves arguments with a full beer garden.

Last train from Erlangen Hauptbahnhof

Beer service ends at 23:00 in the 2026 pattern 4, and special buses between Nuremberg and Erlangen ran until midnight 4. Pulling up the live S-Bahn departure board on the walk down the hill decides whether to hurry or to enjoy one more song.

Paying for the Pinkel-Pass and small purchases

The toilet pass cost 5 EUR for 10 visits in 2026 4. Stalls and rides often prefer coins or notes, but a banking app with data still matters when the cash runs out and the nearest machine in town has a queue.

The complete guide

When Is Erlanger Bergkirchweih in 2027?

The 272nd Erlanger Bergkirchweih is listed by the city of Erlangen for 13 to 24 May 2027 1. The dates follow Pentecost, which falls on 16 May 2027, so the opening barrel tapping lands on Thursday 13 May and the closing keg burial on Monday 24 May. These dates are expected rather than confirmed by the organiser for this guide, and the city's own page is the place to recheck them.

Because Pentecost moves with Easter, the festival moves too. The 2026 edition ran from 21 May to 1 June 4, and the 2025 edition ran from 5 to 16 June 8. Searches for the festival in 2026 or 2025 are therefore answered by those two windows, and neither can be reused for planning a later trip.

The structure repeats every time: twelve days, opening on the Thursday before Pentecost at 17:00, and a final Monday that ends at midnight with the burial of the last keg 3. The twelve days include two weekends, and almost every local has a favourite one.

  • Opening Thursday: barrel tapping at the Henninger-Keller, 13 May 2027.

  • Pentecost Sunday and Monday: 16 and 17 May 2027, a public holiday weekend with the heaviest crowds.

  • Second Thursday: Family Day, 20 May 2027, according to the recurring pattern.

  • Second Sunday: Bergmesse, 23 May 2027, in line with the pattern at the Erich-Keller 3.

  • Final Monday: keg burial, 24 May 2027.

Tip: Book rooms against the full 13 to 24 May 2027 window now, even if the plan is only for a weekend, because Pentecost weekends fill first.

Is Entry to the Burgberg Really Free?

Entry to the Bergkirchweih grounds is free, with no gate ticket and no wristband 4. Costs start once something is ordered: beer by the Mass, food at stalls, rides by the trip.

In 2026 a Mass of beer cost about 12 to 14 EUR, with 12 EUR at the Goldmann Keller and 14 EUR at most other cellars 4. Prices rose again from the 13.20 and 13.50 EUR quoted in two cellars in 2024 5, so a budget built on older figures runs short. Beer is served in stone mugs, and the drink is a Franconian Märzen-style festival beer 3.

Tables are the one thing worth planning. Many cellars let groups reserve through their own booking page, a few take phone calls only, and the Hübner's cellar listed a phone line in 2026 11. Unreserved seats exist everywhere, but they are shared benches filled by first come, first served.

  • Free: walking the grounds, listening to brass music, sitting at unreserved benches.

  • Paid per item: beer, food, rides, lottery and shooting booths.

  • Paid extra: the Pinkel-Pass for toilets, 5 EUR for 10 visits in 2026 4.

  • Family discount: on Family Day, up to 50% off many rides 3.

A realistic day budget is simple to build from those figures: a few Mass of beer at 12 to 14 EUR each in 2026 4, a meal at a stall or cellar kitchen, and perhaps a ride or two. Visitors who bring their own Brotzeit, a common habit on the Berg 7, cut the food cost to almost nothing, and sharing one table among a group keeps the beer bill predictable.

Note: Reservations are held for a limited time in most beer gardens, so arrive on schedule or message the cellar.

How Do You Get to the Burgberg From Nuremberg and Erlangen Hauptbahnhof?

The Burgberg is about a 20-minute walk from Erlangen Hauptbahnhof 4. From Nuremberg Hauptbahnhof, an S-Bahn or regional train towards Bamberg or Forchheim reaches Erlangen in about 17 minutes 9. Together that makes a trip from Nuremberg of well under an hour including the walk.

Visitors arriving by air usually land at Nuremberg Airport and transfer through Nuremberg Hauptbahnhof. Drivers should note that the city advises avoiding the northern inner city and using the car parks in the centre, with a free CityLine bus from there to the grounds (2024) 5. The A 73 reaches Erlangen via the Erlangen-Nord and Erlangen-Tennenlohe exits, but parking near the Berg is difficult, so park-and-ride is the recommended approach (2026) 4.

For the climb up, the Berg-Shuttle ran between Hugenottenplatz and the grounds, from 16:00 to 23:45 on weekdays and from 10:00 on Saturdays in 2024 5. Bicycles are best left at the parking areas north and south of Haagstrasse 5. E-scooters had a parking ban in the city centre and on the Burgberg in 2024 5.

  • Fastest from Nuremberg: S-Bahn to Erlangen, then walk.

  • Late night: special buses between Nuremberg and Erlangen ran until midnight in 2026 4.

  • Walking: from the station through the centre, then uphill along the Hauptstrasse side.

Tip: Go back to the station on foot on the downhill side, because taxis queue up near the Hauptbahnhof when the cellars close.

What Happens Between the Barrel Tapping and the Keg Burial?

The festival is built from a few fixed rituals around twelve days of beer-garden afternoons. It starts with the barrel tapping on the Thursday before Pentecost at 17:00 at the Henninger-Keller, where the mayor pours free beer 27.

On the second Thursday, Family Day cuts prices on many rides by up to half and adds discounts at food stalls 3. On the second Sunday, the Bergmesse is held at the Erich-Keller, an open-air service among the benches 3. The Erich-Keller itself dates to 1718 12.

The festival closes on the last Monday. Festival hosts and helpers walk with shovels and pickaxes, a priest and a barrel of beer, the last keg is buried, and the crowd sings "Lili Marleen" while waving white handkerchiefs 3. The farewell is called the Bierbegraebnis or keg burial 6.

Besides the rituals, the programme is music. Every cellar books its own bands, from brass bands in the afternoon to cover bands and DJs at night 6.

  • Opening Thursday, 17:00: tapping at the Henninger-Keller.
  • Weekday afternoons: quiet benches, regulars and students.
  • Weekend evenings: live bands until about 23:00 6.
  • Bergdienstag: the traditional Tuesday of Pentecost week, now much quieter than before 7.
  • Final Monday: keg burial around midnight 1.

The first Bergkoenigin for the 2027 edition, Leonie Ott, is due to attend official events 1.

Which Day and Hour Is Best for Erlanger Bergkirchweih Weather and Crowds?

Late May in Erlangen averages about 13.2 degrees Celsius, with daytime highs reaching 17.9 degrees Celsius 10. A jacket is useful after dark, and the festival runs through rain as well as sun, because beer gardens have roofs and heaters in places.

The 2026 edition had mostly sunny, summery weather, with isolated rain showers and thunderstorms briefly interrupting the second Sunday 1. Those details are last season's and no guide to what 13 to 24 May 2027 will bring.

Crowds follow the calendar. Weekday afternoons and the first hours after opening are calm. The two weekends and the Pentecost holiday days are dense. The city's own tracker, the Bergbarometer, showed live crowd levels in 2026, and a similar tool may be available again 2.

  • Quietest: weekday afternoons, from 10:00 when the cellars open 4.

  • Busiest: evenings on Friday, Saturday and Pentecost Sunday and Monday.

  • For a seat without a booking: arrive before lunch.

  • Last order: beer service ended at 23:00 in the 2026 pattern 4.

Tip: On a sunny Saturday the benches fill by early afternoon, so a morning arrival is better than an evening one.

Where Should You Stay for Erlanger Bergkirchweih?

Staying in Erlangen's old town or near the Hauptbahnhof puts the Berg within a 20-minute walk 4. That is the best option for late nights, because the last stretch home needs no timetable.

Nuremberg is the main alternative. Trains from Nuremberg Hauptbahnhof reach Erlangen in about 17 minutes 9, and Nuremberg has far more rooms and a wider price range. Special buses between Nuremberg and Erlangen ran until midnight in 2026 4, so the last transfer is easier than the lack of late trains suggests.

Rooms sell out fastest around the Pentecost weekend. Erlangen also hosts a large hospital and university community, and a hotel full of conference guests can limit last-minute rooms. Booking when the dates are announced is the safest route.

  • Walking distance: old town and the streets around the Hauptbahnhof.

  • More choice and lower prices: Nuremberg, with a short train ride.

  • Quieter option: Fuerth and Bamberg direction towns on the same rail line.

Note: Hotel rates were not published in the sources used for this guide, so check current offers on a booking site.

What Do You Eat and Drink at the Cellars?

Beer comes by the Mass in stone mugs, and the festival beer is a Märzen served on the Berg since the festival began 3. The beer comes from several breweries, among them Steinbach Braeu and Entla's Braeu from Erlangen, Tucher from the Nuremberg area, Kitzmann, Kulmbacher Moenchshof and Kundmueller's Weiherer 7.

Cellars grew from storage tunnels dug into the sandstone, where beer matured in cool air before refrigeration 3. Some tunnels run about 500 metres into the hill 7, and the Henninger cellar tunnel is 861 metres long, the longest in Erlangen 11.

Food follows Franconian habits. Many visitors bring their own Brotzeit, a cold meal of bread, sausage or cheese 7. The cellars and stalls serve Franconian dishes and food from around the world 3. A newer garden, Fleischmannsgarten, has served vegetarian and vegan dishes since 2025 7.

  • Beer: Mass in a stone mug, with a deposit on the mug.

  • Franconian food: sausages, Brotzeit boards, roast pork.

  • Non-alcoholic drinks: available at the cellars, with a smaller range 7.

  • Souvenir: Entla's Keller has released a collectible beer mug each year since 1990 7.

Tip: Eat early. Kitchens queue at 18:00, and the bench you hold matters more than the next round.

What Are the Rules on Bags, Glass and Dogs?

Rucksacks and large bags, glass bottles, alcohol brought from outside and dogs, except assistance dogs, were all banned in 2023 6. Bicycles and e-scooters were also barred on the grounds that year 6. A bag-free visit is the simplest, since checks can add minutes at the entrance.

Safety services run through the festival. The 2026 summary counted 630 medical attendances by the Red Cross and nine serious injuries over twelve days 1. A women's support service called Safe Space was open in 2026 1, and in 2023 it was based at Bayreuther Strasse 11 from 17:00 to 22:00 daily 6.

Etiquette is simple. Seats at long benches are shared, so ask before sitting at a table that is not full. Mugs are returned to the counter, not left on the floor. Tipping a few coins to the server is the habit when a table is served.

  • Leave at home: large bags, glass, dogs.

  • Bring: a small bag, a card, and some coins.

  • Emergency number: 112 across Germany.

Note: Rules change each year, so check the city's information sheets for 2027 before packing.

Is the Berg Manageable With Young Children or Older Relatives?

The Burgberg works well for families before the evening crowd arrives, and Family Day on the second Thursday is the easiest day for it, with many rides at up to 50% off 3. In the expected schedule that day is 20 May 2027. Rides, a lottery booth and shooting stalls fill the lower part of the grounds, while the cellars stay a short walk away under the trees.

For older relatives the main obstacle is the slope. The grounds climb from the town side, paths are gravel and benches have no backrests in most gardens. Going up by the Berg-Shuttle that ran from Hugenottenplatz in 2024 spares the hardest stretch 5. Morning and early afternoon are calmer, and a reserved table removes the search for a seat that tires people out.

Pushchairs fit on the main paths, but narrow gaps between benches get tight from mid-afternoon on busy days. Bring ear protection for toddlers near the stage areas, since cover bands play loud music until about 23:00 in the 2023 pattern 6. Non-alcoholic drinks are sold at the cellars, though the range is smaller than the beer list 7.

  • Best day with children: the second Thursday, when rides and many food stalls cut prices 3.

  • Best hours: from opening at 10:00 on weekdays until about 17:00 (2026 pattern) 4.

  • Toilets: the Pinkel-Pass cost 5 EUR for 10 visits in 2026 4.

  • Lost child plan: agree a fixed meeting spot, such as the cellar sign nearest the entrance, before going in.

Tip: Keep the group inside one section of the cellar row, because the line of cellars stretches from Entla's Keller to Birkners Keller 7.

What Else Can You See Around Erlangen on the Same Trip?

Nuremberg is the obvious partner, about 17 minutes away by S-Bahn from Nuremberg Hauptbahnhof 9. It offers the old town, the castle and a long list of museums, and a day there fits before an evening on the Berg. Erlangen itself has the Schlossgarten, the Schlossplatz and the old town streets between the Hauptbahnhof and the hill, and all of them lie on the walking route to the cellars 4.

Bamberg lies along the same rail line, as trains from Nuremberg towards Bamberg and Forchheim stop at Erlangen 9. The Bamberg old town is a regular companion to the Bergkirchweih, with its own smoked-beer tradition. Plan it for a weekday morning, not a Saturday, and keep the return to Erlangen early enough to reach the Berg before the evening bands begin.

The festival also pairs well with Franconian beer-cellar culture elsewhere in the region. The idea of a Keller dug into the hillside is common across the area, which gives the visit a wider context than a single festival ground. Nuremberg Airport is the practical gateway for flights, and trains connect it to Nuremberg Hauptbahnhof and on to Erlangen.

  • Half day: Erlangen old town and Schlossgarten.

  • Full day: Nuremberg old town, then the train back for the evening.

  • Different day: Bamberg by train from Nuremberg direction.

  • Link for data on the road: the Germany eSIM page covers coverage along these train routes.

Note: Sunday opening hours differ from weekdays at the cellars, so look up each stop for the day chosen.

Frequently asked questions

The barrel tapping takes place at 17:00 on the Thursday before Pentecost at the Henninger-Keller, which is 13 May 2027 in the expected schedule 2. The mayor opens the festival and pours the first beer free of charge. Arrive an hour earlier if a spot near the barrel matters.

The Bierbegraebnis is the keg burial that closes the festival on the final Monday, which is 24 May 2027 in the expected schedule 1. Hosts carry the last barrel with shovels and pickaxes, the crowd sings “Lili Marleen” and waves white handkerchiefs 3. It happens around midnight, so plan the trip home in advance.

Family Day falls on the second Thursday, and on that day many rides cost up to 50% less and several food stalls offer discounts 3. In the expected 2027 schedule that is 20 May. It is the calmest time to bring young children, and most offers end by early evening.

In 2026 a Mass cost about 12 to 14 EUR, with 12 EUR at the Goldmann Keller and 14 EUR at most other cellars 4. No 2027 price list has been published yet, so expect a similar range or a small rise. The organiser and each cellar set prices, and mugs usually carry a deposit.

Yes, many cellars take reservations through their own booking pages, while some use phone or email only 11. The city lists the available contacts on its cellar page. Entry to the grounds does not need a ticket, and unreserved benches remain, so booking only helps a group that wants a fixed time.

Light use is enough: maps, train times, a booking page and a banking app need little data. The crowded Burgberg can slow the local network in the evening, so download the Erlangen map and train timetable before leaving the hotel. A travel eSIM installed before the flight avoids roaming charges.
