Why Does a Four-Day Hogmanay Run Through Your Phone Screen?

Edinburgh's Hogmanay is not one night but a chain of ticketed events: the Torchlight Procession from The Meadows on 29 December, the Night Afore Party on 30 December, then the Street Party and Hogmanay in the Gardens on 31 December 1. Every one of them is sold as a paperless e-ticket, and the organiser says the QR code on your confirmation email is what the gate scans 4. The same notice warns that internet access may be limited on the night because of crowd numbers 4. That sentence is the whole reason to plan your data before you leave the hotel.

Think about the pinch points. Princes Street hosts a Street Party that expects 45,000 people 2, with tram lines down the middle of the road and gates at either end 8. West Princes Street Gardens slopes steeply under the castle, with only two entrances chosen at the time of booking 4. If your ticket will not open at the West Gate at 22:40, nobody inside can help you from the other side of the barrier. Add a late-night ride home, a group that splits at a gate, and a midnight call to family, and a stable connection becomes part of the ticket.

Will the QR Code Open at Your West or South Gate in the Gardens?

Hogmanay in the Gardens uses one QR code for the whole order, scanned at the gate you picked when you bought, and the gate cannot be changed afterwards 4. The organiser supports Apple Wallet and Google Wallet, and every ticket in the order is validated on the first scan, so the whole party must arrive together 4. Save the ticket to your wallet while you still have Wi-Fi.

How Do You Find Friends Between the East and West Gates of Princes Street?

The Street Party has an East gate and a West gate along Princes Street, and organisers tell visitors to arrange a meeting point in case the group is separated 8 4. A shared live location pin only works if it loads, so send it before 20:00, then agree one fixed spot, such as a specific monument or shopfront, for the moment signal drops.

How Do You Get Home When Princes Street Empties After Midnight?

Lothian's NightBus network runs from midnight until 4:30am 13, but nobody inside a crowd of tens of thousands will find a stop by guessing. Download the route map, check that your fare app works offline, and look up the Edinburgh Trams festive timings in advance, since festive service patterns can differ from a normal weekday.

Will High Winds Change the Plan on 31 December?

Wikipedia records that the 2024–25 Edinburgh event was cancelled because of high winds 15, and the organiser promises weather updates across all four days of the festival 5. Keep the official ticket page and the event's social channels open on your phone; changes reach people there first.

When Is Edinburgh's Hogmanay in 2026?

Edinburgh's Hogmanay 2026 runs for four days, from 29 December 2026 to 1 January 2027, and the official city tourism listing calls it the 2026–27 festival 10. The year in the title is the year the festival starts; the countdown itself happens at midnight between 31 December 2026 and 1 January 2027 1.

Each day has its own headline event, so you can build a trip around one night or all four:

  • 29 December: Torchlight Procession from The Meadows at 18:30 3

  • 29 December: opening concert at McEwan Hall with Blazin' Fiddles and Karen Matheson at 20:30 6

  • 30 December: Night Afore Party with The Fratellis in West Princes Street Gardens at 18:00 5

  • 31 December: Street Party on Princes Street and Hogmanay in the Gardens with Underworld, both starting at 20:00 2 4

  • 1 January: First Footin' music trail at various times, plus the McEwan Hall closing show "Muckle Be The Light" 6 7

Older guides and search results still use the name Concert in the Gardens. The organiser's 2026–27 page lists the 31 December show as Hogmanay in the Gardens with Underworld, so search for that title when you buy 1. The Night Afore Party page still carries the title "Night Afore Concert" in its browser heading 5.

Hogmanay is the Scots name for the last day of the year, and it is fixed on 31 December, so unlike a lunar festival its date never shifts 15. What does shift is the programme: headliners, prices and timings change every edition. The street celebrations began as the organised festival in 1993 10, and the 1996–97 party was recognised by the Guinness Book of Records as the world's largest New Year's party, with about 400,000 attendees, before numbers were restricted for safety 15.

1 and 2 January are public holidays in Scotland, so expect holiday opening hours on the two mornings after the countdown 15.

Tip: Treat every date and time here as the organiser's current programme, not a guarantee. Check the official Hogmanay page before booking flights, because acts and start times can change.

Which Hogmanay Ticket Gets You Into West Princes Street Gardens?

A Hogmanay in the Gardens ticket is the only one that opens the gates of West Princes Street Gardens on 31 December 2026, and it does not include the Street Party on Princes Street 4. A Street Party ticket does not work the other way round either 17.

Official prices on the organiser's event pages, all for the 2026–27 festival:

  • Torchlight Procession: from £22 including torch, booking fees and charity donation 7

  • Torchlight Procession wristband only: from £5.75 3Night Afore Party: from £42 including booking fees 9

  • Street Party: from £10 2

  • Hogmanay in the Gardens: from £79 4

  • McEwan Hall Festival Club and "Muckle Be The Light": from £27.50 including booking fees 7

  • First Footin' on 1 January: free and unticketed 6

The Gardens and Night Afore tickets come in three types. Enclosure is the premium standing area right in front of the stage, Gardens is the standing area around it, and Premium Area gives access to a viewing platform with its own concession and toilets, which the organiser describes as the best view of the midnight fireworks 4. Each ticket is a paperless e-ticket and you choose either the West or the South entrance when booking 4. The age rules are firm: nobody under 12, and under-16s must have an adult over 18 4.

For the procession, buy at least one torch between two people; extra wristbands or torches are needed for everyone else in the party 3. The procession is rated 12+, and under-18s must be accompanied by an adult 3.

Official tickets are sold only through edinburghshogmanay.com, ticketmaster.com and tickets-scotland.com. There is no official resale, and tickets on Eventbrite or secondary sites are not valid 2.

Tip: Buy your Gardens ticket first and plan your 31 December around it. The Street Party starts at the same time, 20:00, and once you are in either arena there is no re-entry 11.

How Do You Reach Princes Street on Hogmanay Night?

Edinburgh Waverley railway station sits in a valley between the Old Town and the New Town, and the Waverley Steps with covered escalators climb straight up to Princes Street, so you step off the train almost at the Street Party 16. The nearest tram stop to the station is St Andrew Square, about 200 metres away 16.

The two arenas sit close together. The Street Party is listed at Princes Street, EH2 2AN, at 55.9519, -3.1980 2, and Hogmanay in the Gardens at West Princes Street Gardens, 55.9511, -3.2002 4. Tram lines run down the middle of Princes Street 8, and the Street Party has an East entrance and a West entrance 8.

From Edinburgh Airport you have two simple options:

  • Airlink 100 bus: runs round the clock between the airport and the city centre, a 30-minute journey 13

  • Edinburgh Trams: from every 7 minutes, with adult airport fares from £7.90 and stops at Princes Street, St Andrew Square and Haymarket 12

By rail, Glasgow Queen Street is served by two trains an hour via Falkirk High in the December 2025 timetable 16, and London King's Cross by one train an hour 16. Rail timetables on 31 December and 1 January can be reduced, so check last departures before you plan a trip home that night.

Blue Badge parking is available near the sites, with the closest spaces to the Street Party at West Register Street, Waterloo Place and Charlotte Square 8. Everyone else should leave the car at the hotel; the roads around Princes Street are closed to traffic for the celebration.

Getting home is the hard part. NightBus services run from midnight until 4:30am 13, and Edinburgh Trams publishes festive timings separately from its normal timetable 12. Walking is usually the most reliable route home for anyone staying within a couple of miles of the centre.

Tip: For Hogmanay in the Gardens, the accessible entrance is on Kings Stables Road, and Edinburgh's Hogmanay Box Office handles access needs on 0131 623 3033 4 8.

What Is the Programme From the Torchlight Procession to First Footin'?

The Torchlight Procession on 29 December 2026 opens the festival at 18:30 with a river of fire made by 15,000 torch bearers, and about 10,000 spectators watch from the route 3 7. It starts at The Meadows and winds through the Old Town for about 1.5 km, all standing, with "Dip & Tip" points and exit points along the way 3 8. Street theatre, fire performers and drummers warm up the crowd first, and the Massed Pipes and Drums lead the procession alongside Vikings from Shetland's South Mainland Up Helly Aa' Jarl Squad 3.

On 30 December 2026 The Fratellis play the Night Afore Party in West Princes Street Gardens at 18:00, marking 20 years since the album Costello Music was released in September 2006 5. Expect "Chelsea Dagger" and "Whistle for the Choir" 5. The same evening, Julie Fowlis plays McEwan Hall 6.

On 31 December 2026 the day builds slowly. The city tourism listing includes family and evening ceilidh clubs and a candlelit concert at St Giles' Cathedral before the main events 10. At 20:00 the Street Party opens with live music, DJs, giant screens, international street theatre, pipers and drummers, funfair attractions and street food, with fireworks designed by the pyrotechnic company Titanium 2. In the Gardens the stage is live from 20:50 and Underworld play "Born Slippy (Nuxx)" as the live soundtrack to the Midnight Moment, with fireworks fired from Edinburgh Castle 4 7. At the stroke of midnight the crowd sings "Auld Lang Syne", linking arms for the final verse and then rushing together into the centre 15.

On 1 January 2027 First Footin' is a free music trail through landmark buildings across the city centre 6. In 2025/26 it welcomed over 20,000 visitors, and St Giles' Cathedral and Greyfriars Kirk hosted the listed concerts 6. At McEwan Hall, "Muckle Be The Light" closes the festival 7.

Tip: Hold your place for the Midnight Moment rather than wandering the Street Party at 23:45. Once the crowd tightens around the stages, moving is slow and re-entry is not allowed 11.

How Cold Is Princes Street at Midnight on 31 December?

Edinburgh in late December is cold, damp and dark: the Royal Botanic Garden station records a December mean daily maximum of 7.3 °C and a minimum of 1.6 °C, with 67.4 mm of rain and 49.2 hours of sunshine for the whole month (1991–2020) 14. January is almost identical, at 7.3 °C and 1.7 °C 14.

The Gogarbank station, near the airport, is a touch colder and wetter, with a December maximum of 7.0 °C, a minimum of 1.4 °C and 74.9 mm of rain 14. A night of standing in the open air feels colder than the figures suggest, because there is nothing to hide you from the wind.

Wind is the real risk to the plan. Wikipedia records that the 2024–25 Edinburgh event was cancelled because of high winds 15, and the organiser says it will give weather updates across all four days of the 2026–27 festival 5.

Two rules shape what you wear. Umbrellas are banned in the Gardens and at the Night Afore Party, and so are bags larger than A3 (297 mm by 420 mm) 4 5. Pack for an outdoor winter night:

  • A waterproof jacket with a hood, because umbrellas are not allowed through the gate

  • Thermal layers, a hat, gloves and a scarf

  • Waterproof shoes with grip, as the Gardens slope and the pavements are wet

  • A small bag under A3 size with a power bank

  • Ear defenders for children near the speakers and fireworks

Arrive early if you want a place in the Gardens: doors open at 20:00, the stage is live from 20:50, and last entry is 23:00 4. The organiser says late arrival may mean queuing 5.

Tip: Dress for the standing, not the walking. You will be on your feet outdoors for hours, and the Street Party and Gardens both operate a strict no-readmittance policy 11.

Which Edinburgh Neighbourhood Suits a Hogmanay Stay?

The best base for Edinburgh's Hogmanay 2026 is a bed within walking distance of Princes Street, because trams and buses are slow after the countdown and the roads around the arenas are closed. Four areas make sense.

  • New Town (George Street, Queen Street, Charlotte Square): the nearest rooms to the West entrance of the Street Party, where Charlotte Square has the closest Blue Badge spaces 8.

  • Old Town (Royal Mile, Grassmarket, Cowgate): steps from St Giles' Cathedral and the Torchlight route, but noisy on every night of the festival.

  • Around Waverley station and Market Street: convenient if you arrive by train, with the Waverley Steps leading up to Princes Street 16.

  • The Meadows side (Marchmont, Bruntsfield): useful for the Torchlight Procession, which gathers at The Meadows 3.

Leith is the budget option. It is a bus or tram ride from the centre, and trams stop at Princes Street, St Andrew Square and Haymarket on the same line 12. That is fine on 29 and 30 December, but it makes the walk home on 31 December longer than it looks on a map.

Book before you buy a second ticket. The Night Afore Party went on general sale on 11 September 9, the Torchlight Procession on 9 October 7, and Hogmanay in the Gardens tickets sell from £79 4. Anyone who has bought one of these is already searching for a bed in the same square mile.

Tip: Ask your hotel which entrance it advises for 31 December and whether guests can leave bags behind. The A3 bag limit applies at the Gardens 4.

Will Your Phone Work Under Edinburgh Castle at Midnight?

Expect a patchy signal at the Hogmanay Street Party and in West Princes Street Gardens on 31 December 2026, because the organiser itself warns that internet access may be limited on the night due to crowd numbers 4 5. With 45,000 people expected on Princes Street 2 and a Gardens ticket scanned from a QR code on a phone 4, everyone is asking the same mast for the same thing at the same time.

Do these things before you walk to the gate:

  • Add the e-ticket to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet at the hotel; both are supported 4.

  • Screenshot the QR code and the gate name you chose, West or South 4.

  • Download an offline map of Princes Street, The Mound and Kings Stables Road.

  • Share a live location pin with your group before 20:00, then agree a fixed meeting point 4.

  • Charge a power bank, because cold air drains a battery quickly.

A UK eSIM installed before you fly means your phone has data from the moment you land at Edinburgh Airport, so you can book a ride, check the tram and open the e-ticket on the first day. Check that your handset is eSIM-compatible and unlocked, install the profile at home on Wi-Fi, and keep your home SIM active for calls. Do not rely on public Wi-Fi in a crowd of tens of thousands. Treat the connection as a bonus, and use the wallet copy, the offline map and the agreed meeting point as your plan.

First Footin' on 1 January 2027 is easier on the network, since the free trail spreads across different venues around the city centre 6. In 2025/26 it was also live streamed on YouTube for the first time, so you can watch a set from the warm if the weather turns 6.

Tip: Turn on airplane mode between photos at the Midnight Moment and switch back for a message at 00:15. It saves battery in the cold and gives the network a short break.

Frequently asked questions

First Footin' on 1 January is the only free event: a live music trail across Edinburgh city centre venues with no tickets required 6. The Torchlight Procession, Night Afore Party, Street Party and Hogmanay in the Gardens are all ticketed for the 2026–27 festival 1. There is no official resale, so anything advertised on Eventbrite is not valid 2.

No, the two tickets are separate. A Hogmanay in the Gardens ticket does not give access to the Street Party on Princes Street, and a Street Party ticket does not open the Gardens gates 4 17. Both events start at 20:00 on 31 December 2026, so you have to choose one 2 4.

The two arenas have different rules. At the Street Party, alcohol is allowed only in plastic containers or cans up to 500 ml, with a maximum of four per person, and glass is banned 11. At Hogmanay in the Gardens, no alcohol may be brought in, and bars on site serve drinks instead 4.

The procession is rated 12+, and under-18s must be accompanied by an adult aged 18 or over 3. The organiser says the procession and its pre-event warm-up are not recommended for children under 12 3. For younger children, the free First Footin' trail on 1 January is a gentler choice 6.

It starts at The Meadows, on Melville Drive, at 18:30 on 29 December 2026, and winds through the Old Town 3. The accessibility guide gives the route as about 1.5 km, all standing, with “Dip & Tip” points and exit points along the way 8. Gender-neutral accessible toilets are at The Meadows 8.

The 2024–25 Edinburgh event was cancelled because of high winds, so the risk is real 15. The organiser says weather updates will be given across all four days 5. Check the official site and the ticket seller before leaving your hotel, and keep your e-ticket confirmation email, since refund terms come from the seller.

Plan for light use rather than heavy streaming. The organiser warns that internet access may be limited on the night because of crowd numbers, so the ticket QR code should be saved to your wallet before the gate 4. Download offline maps, send location pins early, and keep video uploads for the next morning at your hotel.
