Why Does a Flat Battery Break a Day at the Ati-Atihan Festival?

The Ati-Atihan Festival in Kalibo is a day you do not repeat: the sadsad moves slowly through streets that fill with drum bands, tribes and thousands of spectators, and you cannot step out of it to charge or look something up. Your phone carries your booking confirmation, your offline route from Pastrana Park to your bed, the photo of your room's address and the thread with whoever you came with. Police put 2,980 officers on duty for the 2026 edition, which gives a sense of the crowd you are walking through 7.

Soot, sweat and rain are all normal here. Dancers cover themselves in black, and tribe members often wave you into the line, so a phone in a loose pocket gets dusty or dropped. Bring a small zip bag for it, carry a power bank, and download your maps before you leave the hotel, because the busiest streets are exactly where mobile signal gets thin. If you plan to film the grand procession of the Santo Niño images, you will use more battery than you expect, and a dead phone at the cathedral gate leaves you without a way to find the road back.

How Do You Find Your Barkada Inside the Sadsad Crowd?

In Kalibo a group of friends is called a barkada, and losing yours inside the sadsad happens within minutes. Streets narrow, bands pass in waves and everyone is dressed alike under paint. Share a live location pin before the parade starts, agree a fixed meeting corner near Pastrana Park in case messages stall, and screenshot the pin in case the signal drops. Tribe members may pull you into their dance line, so pins matter more than shouting.

Can You Book a Ride Back From Kalibo After the Procession?

After the last tribe passes, hundreds of visitors want a tricycle or van at once, and the road to the airport and the Caticlan highway slow down. Order a ride through a booking app while you still have signal, and save your driver's number. If your flight leaves the next morning, check the airport's distance from the town, which is 2 km 10, and walk toward the edge of the festival zone before booking.

How Do You Pay for Street Food With Soot on Your Hands?

Roadside stalls along the Kalibo parade route sell grilled snacks and drinks, and most vendors expect cash in small notes. Keep coins and small bills in a zip pocket, because wet hands ruin paper. Use your phone to check an exchange rate or to message your bank when a card is declined. Digital wallets help at larger shops and hotels, but do not rely on them in the street.

When Is Ati-Atihan Festival in 2027?

Ati-Atihan Festival 2027 is expected to peak on Sunday 17 January 2027 in Kalibo, Aklan, because the main day always lands on the third Sunday of January 2.

The date follows a weekday rule, not the moon, which is why it drifts by a few days each year instead of following a lunar or church calendar. Kalibo has not announced the 2027 programme, so treat every date on this page as expected and confirm before you book non-refundable rooms. The build-up is longer than one weekend. The official calendar for the 2026 edition opened on 7 January 2026 with Sadsad Panaad and ended on 18 January 2026 1 17. The 2025 edition ran from 10 to 19 January 2025 3. Expect the same shape in 2027: barrio visits and pocket events first, then the contest and the grand procession on the Sunday.

If you search for older editions, here are the main Sundays:

  • Ati-Atihan Festival 2025: Sunday 19 January 2025 2

  • Ati-Atihan Festival 2026: Sunday 18 January 2026 2

  • Ati-Atihan Festival 2027 (expected): Sunday 17 January 2027 2

The organisers usually preview the January schedule well ahead. For the 2024 edition, the opening salvo that presented the January schedule and contest criteria was held at Pastrana Park the previous October 8. Watch the Kalibo municipal website and its Facebook page for the same event in the 2027 cycle.

Do not confuse Kalibo with other towns. The festival is also held in Ibajay, Lezo, Malinao, Makato, Batan, Altavas and Malay on Boracay, but Kalibo's is the largest and the one this page covers 2. Iloilo's Dinagyang is a separate festival on the fourth Sunday, and its main day was Sunday 25 January 2026 16, so you can pair both on consecutive weekends.

Tip: Hold your flights and a refundable room for the weekend of the third Sunday, then confirm the calendar once the municipality publishes it.

Is Watching the Sadsad in Kalibo Free?

Watching the sadsad from the roadside costs nothing, because it is a public street procession and the sources reviewed list no admission price 3 11.

The Kalibo Señor Santo Niño Ati-Atihan Festival is run by the municipality and the church, not by a ticket office. Mass at the cathedral, the dawn penitential procession, the street dancing and the grand procession are all open-air events where you stand wherever space allows. Where money does change hands is around the edges: costumes, body paint, food, rooms and transport.

A few things are staged, and the details are worth knowing:

  • The contest: tribes compete in the Sadsad Ati-Atihan Contest, with the small tribal category winner listed at PHP 200,000 in the 2026 edition 6. A total of 31 tribes were reported for that contest 6. Viewing places along the judging stretch fill early, and no ticketing was reported in the sources.

  • Costume: you can buy or rent a costume from local shops and market stalls, and sellers with a good reputation for authentic work are preferred. Costumes can take weeks or months to make 11.

  • Paint: soot or charcoal is the tradition, which is how the festival got its name, meaning to imitate the Ati 2.

There is also a cost of a different kind. Rooms, flights and vans are the real budget, because they sell out. A van from Caticlan to Kalibo was listed at about PHP 200 per person 11, and Boracay charges an environmental fee of PHP 300 for foreign visitors if you add it to your trip 15.

Because the festival is free to watch, nobody checks a pass at the roadside. Pickpockets work crowds in any town, so keep a cheap phone pouch at the front of your body.

Note: Foreign visitors from many countries can enter the Philippines without a visa for up to 30 days, but check the Department of Foreign Affairs list for your passport and register with the eTravel system before arrival 14.

How Do You Get to Kalibo for the Sadsad?

Fly into Kalibo International Airport, which sits 2 km east of the town proper, and ride a tricycle or van to Pastrana Park 10.

The airport has a single runway and a two-level terminal, with check-in and security downstairs and restaurants and pasalubong shops in the pre-departure area 10. Direct flights arrive from Manila, so book early for the festival weekend 10. Some seasonal flights also arrive from Seoul and Irkutsk, but Manila is the route most visitors use 10.

Your other options are by land and sea:

  • From Boracay: take the boat to Caticlan jetty port, then a bus or van. Caticlan Port is about 68 km from Kalibo airport 10, and the road trip takes about 1.5 hours 8. A van was listed at about PHP 200 per person 11.

  • From Iloilo City: Buses and vans take about 3 hours to Kalibo, and Roxas City is about 1.5 hours away 9.

  • From Manila by sea: the passage takes 14 to 18 hours, which only suits you if you want the ship experience 9.

The Ati-Atihan Festival in Kalibo in 2027 will put heavy pressure on the Kalibo to Caticlan road. A Boracay travel guide warns of heavy traffic in Kalibo during the festival and advises booking transfers in advance 11. Buses and shuttles run more often between Boracay and Kalibo during the festival season 8 .

Once you arrive, the town is walkable. The airport is 2 km from the centre 10, and the main plaza at Pastrana Park is about ten minutes from the airport 9. In the late afternoon of the main Sunday, roads near the parade route close and tricycles stop at the edge of the zone, so ask your driver to drop you at the last open corner and walk in.

Tip: Save the coordinates 11°42′26″N 122°22′12″E for Kalibo town 9 in your offline maps, and mark your hotel on the same map.

What Happens From the Dawn Penitential Procession to the Grand Procession?

The Ati-Atihan Festival in Kalibo runs on a religious spine, with the sadsad as its loudest day, and the last Sunday follows a fixed order that you can plan around.

The 2025 programme gives the clearest template. The final day of the festival opened with a dawn penitential procession and was followed by devotees' mass, a blessing of the tribes and pilgrims and a blessing of the children 3. A Hornada, a vesper mass of the Santo Niño de Kalibo and a baptism followed 3. The next day the Sad-Sad Ati-Atihan Contest and an Individual Costume Contest ran, with a pilgrims' mass, a grand procession and an awarding ceremony 3. The 2026 official calendar listed the dawn penitential procession, the Sadsad contest, Hornada, vesper mass, Traslacion and grand procession for 18 January 2026 17. Dates shift year to year, so use these as a shape, not a timetable.

What the programme does not say is what the streets feel like. An eyewitness from 2019 described a 7 AM mass in the main plaza followed by the parade at 8 AM, and warned that the streets are chaotic if you arrive late 12. Drummers lead, dancers drag a foot along the ground to the beat, and many paraders wear ordinary clothes like basketball shorts and flip-flops, not full costume 2 12.

During the week, themed parades with floats and bands ran every weekday afternoon in one recent edition, and snake-dancing takes place at Magsaysay Park every night 11. In the weeks before, Santo Niño barrio visits touch a different neighbourhood each day, such as Linabuan Norte, Tigayon, Estancia, Mobo, Tingaw, Bakhaw Norte and Bakhaw Sur 17.

For the 2024 edition, a local order allowed street dancing until 11:00 p.m. on most days and until 2:00 a.m. on 19 and 20 January 2024, while bars could stay open until 4:00 a.m. from 18 to 22 January 2024 5. Zones also banned lasers, smoking, vaping, unregistered vendors and unregistered drones 5.

  • Tribes dance to drum bands, not recorded music.
  • Santo Niño images are carried by devotees; stay back from the bearers and do not touch them.
  • Join the line at the end of a tribe, not through the middle.

What Is Kalibo's Weather in the Third Week of January?

Kalibo in January is warm, humid and not dry: the average daily high is 28°C, the low is 23°C, and about 47 mm of rain falls over roughly 11.4 rainy days 9.

That climate decides what you carry for the Ati-Atihan Festival in Kalibo. The sadsad lasts all day, and you will be on foot in direct sun. A short shower is likely, and the Philippine wet-season tail can bring drizzle in the middle of a parade. Dress in lightweight, breathable clothes and comfortable shoes you do not mind scuffing 11.

A pack list that works:

  • A hat or cap and sunscreen for the open streets

  • Sandals or old trainers that you can wash, not new shoes

  • A thin rain jacket or poncho

  • A fan and a refillable tumbler of water 8

  • Spare clothes in a dry bag, because soot, paint and sweat go everywhere

  • A zip bag for your phone and a power bank

  • Earplugs, if you stand near a drum band for hours

  • Small bills for stalls and tricycles

Arrive early. The Partying Traveler's account of the 2019 festival says the author woke at 4 AM, heard the mass at 7 AM and saw the parade start at 8 AM, then notes that arriving early was the key to parking and a good spot 12. The same writer found the streets mostly empty in the early hours and filling up fast once the mass ended 12.

The main Sunday is the busiest day of the week, while weekday afternoons are easier and the barrio visits are calm. Pack for heat first and rain second.

Tip: Drink water before you feel thirsty. Dancing behind a drum band in 28°C heat 9 dehydrates you faster than walking.

Where Should You Sleep When Kalibo Hotels Sell Out?

Sleep in Kalibo town centre near Pastrana Park if you can, because rooms inside the town were fully booked by 11 January 2024, according to a local tourism officer 4.

Book as soon as your dates are firm. The Kalibo Ati-Atihan Festival fills rooms in the town proper and the large hotels first, and a Boracay guide advises booking flights and rooms well in advance because Kalibo and Boracay both fill up quickly 11. Pick a refundable rate and read recent reviews before you pay.

Where to base yourself:

  • Near Pastrana Park: the best position for the sadsad route and the cathedral. You can walk to the parade in a few minutes, but noise continues past midnight.
  • Along the main road toward the airport: quieter, and the airport is 2 km from the town centre 10, so a morning departure is simple.
  • Outside Kalibo: for a calmer night, look in nearby towns. The festival runs in several Aklan towns, including Ibajay, Lezo, Malinao, Makato, Batan and Altavas 2, but the biggest crowds remain in Kalibo.
  • Boracay: a popular choice for people who want beaches after the festival; the island is reached from Caticlan, which is about 1.5 hours from Kalibo by road 8.

Do not expect a quiet night. Bars could stay open until 4:00 a.m. in the 2024 edition 5, and drums often start before dawn. Bring earplugs and ask for a room away from the street.

Tip: If Kalibo is sold out, a room in Roxas City is about 1.5 hours away by bus 9, but you will need to plan the return trip carefully after the procession.

Check-in is generally in the afternoon and check-out in the morning, so ask your hotel whether you can leave bags with them on the last day after the grand procession.

Will Your Phone Hold Up Along the Sadsad Route?

Your phone matters most in the middle of the sadsad route, so download offline maps of Kalibo and save your hotel's address before the crowd arrives.

The Kalibo festival crowds pack the same few streets between Pastrana Park and the cathedral, and thousands of people send photos and messages at once. Police planned for 2,980 officers on the 2026 edition's last two days, which hints at how many people share the cell network 7. Expect slow uploads and delayed messages around the grand procession, not a total blackout.

Do this before the main Sunday:

  1. Download offline maps for Kalibo and Pastrana Park.

  2. Screenshot your booking, your flight and your tricycle driver's number.

  3. Send a live location to someone who is not at the festival.

  4. Turn on low data mode while you film, then upload at your hotel.

Hotel and café Wi-Fi in town is useful for uploads, but a shared connection slows down when many guests arrive. A local data plan keeps maps, group chats, ride booking and translation working while you walk. If you want mobile data without hunting for a SIM shop at the airport, a Philippines eSIM can be installed before you fly and switched on when you land.

At Kalibo International Airport, the arrivals area is small, so queues for SIM counters can be long right after a flight lands 10. Make sure your phone is eSIM-compatible and unlocked before you travel.

Note: Data use depends on what you do. Maps and chat need little. Video calls and filming need much more. No source gives a reliable per-day figure for Kalibo, so size your plan by your habits, not by a number.

Frequently asked questions

The sadsad is both the Ati-Atihan street parade and the dance style used in it. Dancers drag one foot along the ground in time with the beat of marching bands, moving as a tribe through Kalibo's main roads and side alleys. You can join the end of a tribe's line and copy the step without any training or experience 2 8.

Yes, visitors can wear soot or charcoal paint, because the festival's name means to imitate the Ati, and covering the skin in black is the tradition 2. Keep it respectful: avoid mocking costumes, ask before photographing a tribe up close, and remember that the day is also a religious honour for the Santo Niño 8.

Paepak is a healing ritual in which a church worker presses the feet of the small wooden Santo Niño de Kalibo image onto a devotee's head or body 13. The 2025 programme listed paepak throughout the festival, from 10 to 19 January 2025 3. Visitors can watch quietly or take part, but follow the lay workers' directions and do not photograph faces without permission.

Ati-Atihan in Kalibo is the older festival and the model for Iloilo's Dinagyang, which was inspired by it 2. Kalibo's main day falls on the third Sunday of January, while Dinagyang's falls on the fourth, and Dinagyang's main day in 2026 was Sunday 25 January 2026 16. Kalibo is looser and more participatory, with open street dancing instead of a stadium-style show.

No, the 2024 festival-zone rules banned red, blue and green lasers, smoking and vaping, unregistered ambulant vendors and littering, and drones unless registered with the local government and the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines 5. Expect similar rules in later editions, and check the municipality's notices before you fly a drone or light a cigarette.

Plan for maps, group chat and some photos, which is light use, and add more only if you film video or stream. No source publishes a reliable per-day figure for Kalibo, so avoid guessing a number. Download offline maps first, upload photos at your hotel Wi-Fi, and a modest eSIM data plan is enough for most visitors who do not live-stream.
