A Tulip Festival With Four Gates and No Centre

The Skagit Valley Tulip Festival has no main gate, no single stage and no wristband. It is a self-guided drive through a 15-mile triangle of fields bounded by Highway 20, the Skagit River and the Swinomish Channel, with four private display gardens selling their own tickets 14 3. RoozenGaarde sits on Beaver Marsh Road, Tulip Town and Tulip Valley Farms on Bradshaw Road, and Garden Rosalyn on Jungquist Road 9.

That layout means your phone does the job a festival information tent would do elsewhere. The official bloom status page tells you whether the fields you planned to see are still in buds, at peak or already topped 2. The interactive map gives the garden addresses your GPS needs, and each garden's QR ticket lives on the same screen 14. Lose your connection between McLean Road and Bradshaw Road and you are left guessing which field is open, which exit is jammed and where the rest of your group parked.

Scanning a Tulip Town Ticket at the Bradshaw Road Lot

Each garden sells its own tickets online, and they are nonrefundable 2. Tulip Town's general admission covers parking, entry and the trolley ride, so have the ticket open as you pull in to the Bradshaw Road lot 8. Keep the confirmation email downloaded before you leave I-5, because queues of cars build behind anyone hunting for a ticket.

Dodging the Exit 226 Backup on Kincaid Street

The festival office tells drivers to avoid I-5 Exit 226 on busy days because it backs up, and to use Exit 221 or Exit 230 instead 14. A plain GPS route does not know which exit is jammed, so a live traffic layer is what lets you change course before you are committed to the Kincaid Street ramp.

Regrouping After Night Bloom on Bradshaw Road

Night Bloom at Tulip Valley Farms runs from 8 to 10 pm on Saturdays in April, with lasers and black lights across the rows 19. The fields are dark, the lot empties at once, and the farm roads are unlit. Sharing live locations before the show starts is the simplest way to find each other at closing.

The complete guide

When Is Skagit Valley Tulip Festival in 2027?

Skagit Valley Tulip Festival 2027 is expected to run from Thursday 1 April to Friday 30 April 2027, the fixed April window the organiser uses every spring 2. The Tulip Foundation of Skagit Valley has not yet announced a 2027 programme, and the dates stay flexible: the festival may begin before 1 April if the blooms come early, and may run past 30 April if tulips are still flowering 2 13.

The flowers, not the calendar, decide your trip. Tulips here typically bloom between late March and late April, with peak bloom usually in the first two to three weeks of April 2. On average the first tulips open around 4 April 2. Daffodils come first, flowering from mid-March into early April, which is why Tulip Valley Farms ran a separate Daffodil Festival from 6 to 20 March 2026 10.

The last two seasons show how far the window can move:

  • 2026: gardens opened early, Tulip Town from 28 March to 3 May 2026, and the festival declared full bloom on 17 April 2026 8 9
  • 2020: the festival was cancelled on 25 March 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and some fields were cut early 18

The event itself began in 1984 as a short celebration in Mount Vernon and grew into a countywide month 13. Skagit County took over from Bellingham as the region's bulb centre after the Bellingham Tulip Festival ended in 1930, and William Roozen, who arrived from the Netherlands in 1946, bought the Washington Bulb Company in 1955 18. That company now runs RoozenGaarde, and the roadside fields marked with a tulip icon on the official map are RoozenGaarde fields 4 14.

Tip: Bookmark the official Bloom Status page from mid-March and check it the night before you drive; it tracks the fields from first buds to full bloom 1.

If you can only choose one week in 2027, aim for the second week of April and keep a back-up day either side 2.

Paying Admission Garden by Garden on the Skagit Flats

There is no single Skagit Valley Tulip Festival ticket: RoozenGaarde, Tulip Town, Tulip Valley Farms and Garden Rosalyn each set their own prices and hours, and you buy entry separately for each one 2 3. Tickets are sold online and at the gate, and online prices are usually lower 10. All four gardens include free parking, with accessible spaces 2.

What adults paid in the 2026 season 10:

  • RoozenGaarde: $19 on weekdays, $23 on weekends; children 2 and under free 10
  • Tulip Town: $20.48 for ages 12 and over, $17.37 for seniors and military, $12.20 for ages 6 to 11 10
  • Tulip Valley Farms: $18.10 to $20.17 for ages 16 and over, $11.89 to $13.96 for ages 3 to 15 10
  • Garden Rosalyn: $18.62 to $19.65 for ages 13 and over, $16.55 for ages 2 to 12, veterans and seniors 10

The gardens differ more than the prices suggest. RoozenGaarde covers more than 60 acres, plants more than 1 million bulbs in its display garden each year and grows more than 200 tulip and daffodil varieties around an authentic Dutch windmill 4. Tulip Town has 6 acres of display gardens, a trolley ride and a beer and wine garden for over-21s 5 8. Tulip Valley Farms is the only one with U-pick rows 10. Garden Rosalyn is a 7-acre hand-planted garden with its own pond 7 10.

Tulip Town also sold a season pass for $52.60 and a photography pass for early access from 6 to 8 am and evening access from 7 pm to sunset in 2026 8. Tickets across the gardens are nonrefundable, even if the bloom is late, though Tulip Town allows a ticket to be transferred to another guest 2 8.

Tip: Buy RoozenGaarde for a weekday if you can: the 2026 gap of $4 per adult adds up for a family, and Monday to Thursday crowds are lighter 10.

Driving past the commercial fields costs nothing. Fields marked with a tulip icon on the official map can be seen from the road, and some have parking 14.

Reaching Beaver Marsh Road From I-5 Exit 221

The tulip fields lie west of Mount Vernon, about 60 miles north of Seattle and 70 miles south of Vancouver, BC, along Interstate 5 14. Skagit Valley is about 1 hour by road from Seattle and 30 minutes from Bellingham 14. The nearest airports are Seattle-Tacoma International (SEA) and Bellingham International (BLI) 14.

By car, the festival office gives three rules 14:

  • Northbound from Seattle, leave I-5 at Exit 221; southbound from Bellingham, use Exit 230 14
  • Avoid Exit 226 at Kincaid Street on busy days, because it often backs up 14
  • Enter a garden's street address into GPS rather than a field name, and never park on the roadside, which is unsafe and damages farmland 14

The garden addresses are 15867 Beaver Marsh Road for RoozenGaarde, 15002 Bradshaw Road for Tulip Town, 15245 Bradshaw Road for Tulip Valley Farms and 16648 Jungquist Road for Garden Rosalyn 9. Congestion is worst at the end of the day, when gardens close and everyone heads back to I-5 15.

Without a car, take Amtrak Cascades to the Mount Vernon stop at the Skagit Transportation Center, 105 East Kincaid Street 17. Skagit Transit Route 615 leaves the same station Monday to Saturday along McLean Road 14. Get off at Beaver Marsh Road and McLean Road: RoozenGaarde is about a quarter mile south, and Tulip Town about 1 mile away via McLean Road and Bradshaw Road 14. There are no station shuttles, and the few local guided tours, with departures at 9:30 am and 2:30 pm, book up quickly 14.

Tip: Make a restroom stop before you reach the fields. There are no public restrooms out on the farm roads; use the I-5 rest area north of Arlington or Lions Park on Freeway Drive in Mount Vernon 15.

Cycling works too: most valley roads are flat, but wind and rain are common and shoulders vary, so ride defensively 14.

The April Programme Across Skagit County

The Skagit Valley Tulip Festival programme is a month of separate events, not a single timetable, and the gardens are open daily throughout April 2 1. The fixed points worth planning around are a parade, a street fair, garden talks and the Saturday Night Bloom.

  • Tulip Parade, La Conner: ran from 10 am to 1 pm on Saturday 11 April 2026 along First Street in downtown La Conner 11
  • Tulip Festival Street Fair, Mount Vernon: ran 17 to 19 April 2026 on South First Street, with nearly 200 artisan vendors over half a mile near the Skagit River 9 12
  • Night Bloom, Tulip Valley Farms: Saturdays from 4 to 25 April 2026, 8 to 10 pm, across 10 acres and more than 140 varieties 19
  • Tulip Talks with Farmer Andrew: daily at 10 am, 1 pm and 4 pm at Tulip Valley Farms 6
  • Kids' egg hunt, Tulip Town: for ages 10 and under on 4 and 5 April 2026, included with admission 10

The street fair has run since 1984 and is hosted by the Mount Vernon Downtown Association 12. It is free to walk and was named best street fair in the KING-TV Best of the Northwest awards in 2010 18. The parade is a La Conner tradition with roots in the festival's earliest years 11.

Inside the gardens, the rhythm is simple. RoozenGaarde's display garden is the centrepiece photo stop, with the commercial fields stretching out behind the windmill 4. Tulip Town adds a trolley loop and indoor displays, and Tulip Valley Farms has a half-acre Bloom Blocks display garden next to its U-pick rows 9 6.

Tip: Festival headquarters at 311 West Kincaid Street in Mount Vernon opens daily from 9 am to 5 pm in April and hands out the printed festival guide and map 1 14.

The 2027 dates for the parade and street fair have not been published; both have fallen on mid-April weekends 11 12. Art exhibits and a festival photo contest run across the month as well 1.

Why Mid-Week Mornings Beat Sunny Weekend Afternoons

The best time to arrive at the Skagit tulip fields is a weekday morning, and the worst is a sunny weekend afternoon. The festival office says weekends are the busiest and that early mornings and late afternoons in mid-week have the smallest crowds 2. Traffic is heaviest when the gardens close and everyone turns back towards I-5 at once 15.

Crowd levels by slot, on a scale of 1 to 5, from the official advice and local experience:

  • Weekday, opening time: 1 to 2; quiet rows, wet petals, good light 2

  • Weekday, late afternoon: 2; parking is easy as day-trippers leave 2

  • Weekend, late morning: 4; queues at the garden lots begin 10

  • Weekend, mid-afternoon at peak bloom: 5; two-lane farm roads back up 10

Opening times give you a head start: Garden Rosalyn opened at 8 am and RoozenGaarde and Tulip Valley Farms at 9 am in 2026 7 4 6. Tulip Town opened at 10 am Monday to Thursday and 9 am Friday to Sunday 10.

April in Mount Vernon is cool and damp. Long-term NOAA normals give a mean daily high of 58.1°F (14.5°C), a mean low of 40.5°F (4.7°C) and 2.53 inches (64 mm) of rain over the month 16. That means showers, wind across the open flats and fields that turn to mud. Rainy days are usually quieter in the gardens 10.

What to wear and pack:

  • Rain boots or waterproof shoes; the rows get muddy 8

  • Layers and a waterproof jacket for wind off the Skagit flats

  • A change of clothes for children and a bag for muddy boots 10

  • Cash for farm stands; one valley produce stand known for oversized ice cream cones takes cash only 10

Note: Fields may not be accessible to strollers or wheelchairs after rain; check with the garden before you go 10.

Basing Yourself Near Kincaid Street in Mount Vernon

Downtown Mount Vernon is the most practical base for the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival in 2027, because the train station, the bus hub and festival headquarters all sit on Kincaid Street 17 1. Amtrak Cascades and Skagit Transit Route 615 both use the station at 105 East Kincaid Street, so you can stay without a car and still reach the fields on a weekday 17 14.

The festival is partly funded by lodging tax grants from La Conner, Anacortes, Burlington, Mount Vernon, Sedro-Woolley and Skagit County, which is a good map of where the beds are 1:

  • Mount Vernon: walkable downtown near the Skagit Riverwalk, short drive to RoozenGaarde and Tulip Town 17
  • Burlington: just north of Mount Vernon, close to I-5 Exit 230 at Highway 20 15
  • La Conner: small waterfront town on the Swinomish Channel, on the parade route and on the western edge of the bloom triangle 11 14
  • Anacortes: further west on Fidalgo Island, convenient if you are adding Deception Pass State Park 20
  • Sedro-Woolley: quieter base east of I-5, useful if you are heading towards the mountains afterwards

Weekends in mid-April fill first, because peak bloom and the La Conner parade and Mount Vernon street fair cluster there 2 11 12. Book as soon as you settle on dates, and pick a room with free cancellation, since the bloom can shift by a week either way. A 2026 season that peaked on 17 April after an early start is a good reminder of that 9.

Tip: If Mount Vernon is full, staying in Bellingham, 30 minutes north, keeps you within easy reach of Exit 230 14.

Seattle works as a base for a day trip, about 1 hour away without traffic 14. The drive back south on sunny weekend evenings is the slowest part of the day, so a night in the valley saves the worst of it 15.

Keeping Bloom Updates Loading on McLean Road

The Skagit Valley Tulip Festival is a phone-driven festival: tickets, the bloom map and the garden addresses all live online, and you will be checking them from a car on two-lane farm roads 2 14. The fields are open farmland west of Mount Vernon, with no central festival site and a large crowd over the month. A 2023 KING 5 estimate put attendance at 400,000 to 500,000 visitors 18.

What visitors actually use their data for here:

  • Opening QR tickets at the RoozenGaarde, Tulip Town, Tulip Valley Farms and Garden Rosalyn gates 3
  • Reloading the Bloom Status page and interactive map between gardens 2 14
  • Live traffic to steer around the Exit 226 backup 14
  • Checking Skagit Transit Route 615 times at Beaver Marsh Road 14
  • Uploading photos and video, which is where most data goes on a tulip day

Signal can thin out in the open fields on peak weekends, when thousands of phones crowd the same few towers. Download the festival map and screenshot your tickets in Mount Vernon before you head west on McLean Road, so a slow connection never stops you at a gate.

Tip: Visitors flying into Seattle-Tacoma International from abroad can set up a United States eSIM before departure, so the festival map and garden tickets load from the airport onwards.

International visitors are common: the festival draws people from all 50 states and more than 85 countries 9. Garden tickets are sold online, though some farm stands still want cash 3 10. Keep a power bank in the car; cold April wind drains batteries faster on long photo sessions.

Frequently asked questions

No. RoozenGaarde does not allow pets, so leave dogs with someone or visit another garden 2 4. Tulip Town welcomes leashed dogs at no charge, Garden Rosalyn allows leashed pets, and Tulip Valley Farms charges a flat $5 per group for a well-behaved dog 5 7 6. Drones are banned at all the gardens 2.

Visitors can look and photograph from fields marked with a tulip icon on the official map, and some of those spots have parking 14. Walking into commercial rows is not allowed, and parking on the road shoulder is unsafe and damages farmland 14. For walking among tulips, buy a ticket to one of the four display gardens 3.

Night Bloom is the only nighttime tulip show of its kind in the US, with lasers, black lights, music and glowing pollen across 10 acres of tulips 19. It runs on Saturdays in April from 8 to 10 pm and needs its own ticket 19 10. It suits visitors already staying in the valley, not day-trippers driving back to Seattle.

Yes, with some walking. Take Amtrak Cascades to the Mount Vernon stop at 105 East Kincaid Street, then Skagit Transit Route 615, which runs Monday to Saturday 17 14. From the Beaver Marsh Road and McLean Road stop, RoozenGaarde is about a quarter mile and Tulip Town about 1 mile on foot 14.

Garden tickets are nonrefundable, and that includes weather or a slow bloom 2 8. Tulip Town lets you transfer a ticket to another guest and sold optional purchase protection at checkout in 2026 8. Check the official Bloom Status page before buying, and choose a dated ticket only once the gardens report open buds 2.

Coverage across the open farmland west of Mount Vernon can slow down on sunny peak-bloom weekends, when hundreds of thousands of visitors pass through over the month 18. Screenshot garden tickets and download the festival map in town before driving out on McLean Road or Bradshaw Road, so a weak connection never holds you at a gate 14.
