Overview

From 25 November to 24 December 2026, the Dresden Striezelmarkt spreads more than 200 stalls across the Altmarkt in Dresden's old town for its 592nd edition 1. Mayor Dirk Hilbert opens it at 16:00 on 25 November, and the Stollenfest parade brings the giant Stollen to the Kulturpalast stage on Saturday 5 December 1 11. Entry is free, and the market traces back to a one-day market granted in 1434 3 19.

Which Tram Lines Serve the Altmarkt Stop After the Stalls Close?

Trams 1, 2 and 4 stop at Altmarkt, right beside the stalls, while lines 6, 11 and 12 and bus 62 serve Prager Straße 2. From 26 November to 23 December 2026 the stalls close at 21:00, so most visitors walk to the same platforms at the same moment 1.

A live departure board on a phone shows which of the three stops has the next tram. That matters on parade days: during the Große Bergparade on 20 December 2025, Wilsdruffer Straße closed from 16:30 to about 17:45 and trams were diverted from Postplatz to Pirnaischer Platz 17.

Why Does the Stufenpyramide Fail as a Meeting Point on Stollenfest Saturday?

The 14.61 m pyramid in the middle of the Altmarkt is the obvious landmark, so on Stollenfest Saturday everyone picks it 1. About 65,000 people came to the 2025 Stollenfest in Dresden's old town, and the 2026 parade reaches the Kulturpalast stage around 12:00 on 5 December 15 11. A shared live-location pin works better.

If a child goes missing, the market supervisory office (Marktaufsicht) sits opposite the tourist information pavilion on Wilsdruffer Straße 5. In 2025, staff and police reunited three lost children with their parents 9.

What Do the German Labels on Erzgebirge Carvings Say?

In 2025, 27 of the 216 traders on the Altmarkt sold Erzgebirge folk art 3. A camera translation app separates a Räuchermann (an incense smoker figure) from a Nussknacker (nutcracker), a Schwibbogen (candle arch) and a Stufenpyramide (step pyramid) 4. The same applies at the Lausitz blue-print fabric and Plauen lace stalls 4.

Do Striezeltaler Coins Replace Cards at the Altmarkt Stalls?

The Striezeltaler is the official means of payment on the Striezelmarkt, and in 2026 the city sells 11 Taler for 10 euros 2. The coins are on sale at the tourist information pavilion on Wilsdruffer Straße, together with Striezelmarkt mugs and postcards 5. The 2025 collector Taler with the angel and miner motif was almost sold out before Christmas Eve 9. A phone wallet still needs signal when a bank confirms a card payment by push message.

Which Days Does the 592nd Dresden Striezelmarkt Fill the Altmarkt?

The 592nd Dresden Striezelmarkt runs from Wednesday 25 November to Thursday 24 December 2026 on the Altmarkt, opposite the Kulturpalast on Wilsdruffer Straße 1. The city confirmed these dates on 9 April 2026, when it opened applications for 216 stall places in 47 trader groups 8. More than 200 traders take part, and they start building their huts on the square from 11 November 2026 1 7.

Opening day follows a fixed sequence that starts in the Kreuzkirche beside the Altmarkt 1:

  • 15:00: ecumenical church service in the Dresdner Kreuzkirche 1
  • 15:45: procession from the Kreuzkirche to the main Striezelmarkt stage 1
  • 16:00: Mayor Dirk Hilbert opens the market with the lights and the first Christstollen cut 1
  • 16:30: stall sales begin 1

On 25 November 2026 the market is open from 16:00 to 21:00 1. From 26 November to 23 December 2026 the stalls trade daily from 10:00 to 21:00, and on 24 December 2026 the Altmarkt closes at 14:00 after a farewell programme 1.

Five days before the opening, at 16:45 on 20 November 2026, the city runs a lighting rehearsal for the illuminations, and visitors are welcome on the square 1. The 23 m Nordmann fir from Neundorf near Pirna, the centre of the market, arrived on the Altmarkt on 31 October 2026 7. Its two LED chains measure 2,160 m in total 7.

In 1434, Elector Friedrich II and his brother Duke Sigismund granted Dresden a free market on the day before Christmas Eve on what is now the Altmarkt, and the market has kept its date close to the holiday ever since 3.

Why Is There No Gate Around the Altmarkt Stalls?

The Striezelmarkt has no gate because it is a city market on a public square: the City of Dresden runs it on the Altmarkt, and entry for the 2026 edition is free 1 19. It is the largest event in Dresden, with between 2 and 2.2 million visitors every year 9. Nothing has to be booked before 25 November 2026, and visitors simply walk in from Wilsdruffer Straße, the Kreuzkirche side or Postplatz 1 20.

Spending starts at the huts. The market's own coin, the Striezeltaler, costs 11 Taler for 10 euros in 2026 2. At the 2025 Stollenfest, the giant Stollen sold for 10 euros per 500 g 16. The historic Ferris wheel turns above the huts on the same square, next to the 14.61 m pyramid 1.

The mug is the souvenir most visitors keep. The central mug-washing station at the Kreuzkirche cleaned about 760,000 Striezelmarkt mugs in 2025, and 65,000 mugs left the Altmarkt as souvenirs that season 9. The 2025 design showed an angel and a miner 9. A mug returned at a stall goes back to the Kreuzkirche station for washing, and that station is one reason the European Excellent Christmas Market Association named the Striezelmarkt an Excellent European Christmas Market in December 2025 and praised its sustainability 9.

The tourist information pavilion on Wilsdruffer Straße also houses a Christmas post office with special stamps, and a letterbox stands in front of it 5.

How Do Trams 1, 2 and 4 Reach the Altmarkt Stop?

Trams 1, 2 and 4 stop at Altmarkt, the stop named after the square, and lines 6, 11 and 12 and bus 62 serve Prager Straße on the south side 2. The Altmarkt sits in the centre of Dresden's old town, opposite the Kulturpalast and directly on Wilsdruffer Straße 1. The Postplatz and Pirnaischer Platz interchanges are a few steps away at either end of Wilsdruffer Straße 20.

From Dresden Airport, the S2 S-Bahn leaves from directly beneath the terminal every 30 minutes 18. It reaches Dresden-Neustadt in 12 minutes and the Hauptbahnhof in 20 minutes 18. From the Hauptbahnhof, Prager Straße leads north on foot to the Altmarkt. In December 2025, more than 80 exhibitors of the Dresdner Winterlichter market lined that same street 9.

Driving into the centre is the slower choice. Underground car parks such as the one at the Altmarkt-Galerie exist, but Dresden Marketing recommends public transport for the Altmarkt 20. In 2024, the city added a park-and-ride service from Messe Dresden to cut the old Advent traffic jams 3.

Parade days change the tram map. During the Große Bergparade on 20 December 2025, Wilsdruffer Straße closed from 16:30 to about 17:45 17. Trams were diverted between Postplatz and Pirnaischer Platz, and the city asked visitors to avoid the centre by car 17. The Stollenfest parade also crosses the old town from around 11:00 on Saturday 5 December 2026, so checking the departure board before leaving the hotel saves a wasted walk to the Altmarkt stop 11.

What Happens When the Giant Stollen Reaches the Kulturpalast Stage?

When the parade arrives at the stage in front of the Kulturpalast around 12:00 on Saturday 5 December 2026, the giant Stollen is cut shortly afterwards and the sale begins 11. The patron of the day is the Dresdner Stollenmädchen, chosen each year from young bakers and confectioners; for 2026 she is Ruth Liebscher 10 6. The 2026 timetable runs as follows 11:

  • From 09:45: baroque festivities in front of the Kulturpalast 11
  • From 10:00: opening of the Dresdner Stollenfest 11
  • Around 11:00: parade starts through the historic old town 11
  • Shortly after 12:00: cutting of the giant Stollen 11
  • From about 12:15: sale of the giant Stollen 11
  • Around 15:30: end of the festival 11

The festival copies a baroque spectacle. In 1730, Augustus the Strong had a Christstollen of around 1,800 kg baked for the Zeithain pleasure camp, about 7 m long and 3 m wide, and it was cut into 24,000 portions with a large Dresden Stollen knife 11. The first Dresdner Stollenfest in 1994 brought a 1,800 kg Stollen into the old town, and the festival now falls on the Saturday before the second Sunday of Advent 11.

The 2025 Stollenfest was the 30th edition, with about 65,000 visitors, around 500 parade participants and a giant Stollen of more than two tonnes 15. The bakers build it from plates measuring 60 by 40 cm and weighing about 7 kg each 16. Part of the 2025 proceeds went to the Lacrima grief centre for children run by the Johanniter in Dresden and to the Palucca support association 11.

Around 100 certified bakeries make Dresdner Christstollen in and around Dresden, and many of their bakers walk in the parade 15. The best view of the cut is on the Kulturpalast forecourt, where the 2026 parade ends around 12:00 11.

What Makes the 14.61-Metre Stufenpyramide a Record Holder?

The Erzgebirge step pyramid on the Altmarkt stands 14.61 m tall, and Guinness World Records lists it as the largest step pyramid in the world 1 4. It entered the Guinness book in 1999, according to the City of Dresden 2. The city lists it first among the market's superlatives 1.

The form comes from the Erzgebirge mountains on the Czech border. The first pyramids were static wooden frames wrapped in fir branches, and the oldest surviving step pyramid is said to date from around 1780 4. In a working pyramid, burning candles drive the tiers, so angels, shepherds and miners circle past the viewer 4. The Altmarkt version turns that tabletop design into a 14.61 m landmark 1.

The Schwibbogen on the same square is the largest walk-in candle arch in the world 1. Its shape is said to come from a miners' lamp hung underground for the Mettenschicht, the last shift before Christmas Eve, which links it to Saxony's mining past 4. The first turned Seiffen nutcracker king, another Erzgebirge icon sold on the Altmarkt, dates from 1870 4.

Building the pyramid is a visible part of the season. Work on the pyramid and the themed houses started on 2 November 2026, after the 23 m tree was set up on 31 October 2026 7. The pyramid gets its own day on 12 December 2026, the Pyramid Festival, followed by the Day of Christmas Handicrafts on 13 December 2026 1. Both fall on the third Advent weekend of 2026 1. In 2025 the same two days put Erzgebirge craftwork at the centre of the programme, with live workshops on the Altmarkt 9.

Which Weekday Hours Keep the Altmarkt Quiet Between Festival Saturdays?

The quietest Striezelmarkt hours are Monday to Thursday from the 10:00 opening until early afternoon, because every Advent weekend of the 2026 edition carries a themed festival 1. The 2026 weekend calendar on the Altmarkt is 1:

  • 28 November: Dresdner Adventskalenderfest (Advent Calendar Festival) 1
  • 29 November: Day of the Dresdner Kreuzkirche 1
  • 5 December: Dresdner Stollenfest 1
  • 6 December: Dresdner Pfefferkuchenfest (Gingerbread Festival) 1
  • 12 December: Dresdner Pyramidenfest (Pyramid Festival) 1
  • 13 December: Day of Christmas Handicrafts 1
  • 19 December: Dresdner Pflaumentoffel-Fest 1
  • 20 December: Dresdner Striezelkinderfest 1

In December 2025, the city reported that the weekend festivals drew tens of thousands of people, and the Große Bergparade on 20 December 2025 alone counted more than 120,000 spectators 9. That parade was the first in Dresden since 2011, with more than 500 miners' musicians and costume wearers 3.

Crowds bring pickpockets. In 2025, police recorded 51 thefts across Dresden's Christmas markets, up from 16 in 2024, with about 40 officers on duty every day 9. The Striezelmarktwache police post sits at the Haus Altmarkt next to the market supervisory office, and a security company guards the huts after closing 5. In 2025 the city handed out child safety wristbands there, and about 130 lost items were handed in, including wallets, cards and a pram 9.

Christmas Eve is a short day: the stalls open from 10:00 to 14:00 on 24 December 2026, with the farewell programme on the Altmarkt 1.

How Much Do Dresden Room Rates Climb While the Striezelmarkt Runs?

Dresden hotel rooms cost about 23% more in December than in the rest of the year, according to Dresden Marketing figures for December 2024 9. Average occupancy that month was 79%, which the city says is clearly higher than in other large German cities 9. The city links this December peak directly to the Striezelmarkt as Dresden's main tourist draw 9.

The official Striezelmarkt site names three bases: the baroque old town around the Altmarkt, the lively Neustadt across the Elbe, or the outskirts away from the Advent bustle 1. The Dresden Information office helps find a room with no obligation, and its service centre answers on +49 351 501 501, Monday to Friday 9:00 to 18:00 and Saturday 9:00 to 17:00 1 2.

The Neustadt suits travellers arriving by air, because the S2 from Dresden Airport stops at Dresden-Neustadt after 12 minutes 18. The old town keeps the Altmarkt, the Frauenkirche and the Kreuzkirche within walking distance. A room on the outskirts works best near the Messe Dresden park-and-ride, which the city introduced for Advent in 2024 3.

Two weekends fill up first. The Stollenfest weekend falls on 5 and 6 December 2026, with the Gingerbread Festival on the Sunday 1. In 2025, the city's tourism partners described the last Advent weekend as a strong travel weekend with well-booked hotels 9. A room booked for Tuesday 1 to Thursday 3 December 2026 sits between two festival weekends 1.

What Is a Pflaumentoffel?

A Pflaumentoffel is an edible little man made of dried prunes, dressed as a chimney sweep with a top hat and ladder, and sold as a lucky charm at the Dresden Striezelmarkt 1 14. The Saxon state's regional food register calls it a typical symbol of Dresden Christmas and of the market on the Altmarkt 14. The figure was first documented in 1801 14.

The model was the poor boys who climbed and cleaned the narrow chimneys of Dresden's town houses 14. Poor Striezel children made the figures themselves and sold them on the market 14. In 1853, the painter Ludwig Richter showed two of these children in a woodcut titled “Ausverkauf wegen Geschäftsaufgabe”, and the little prune figure later became the emblem of the Striezelmarkt 3 14. Selling by children was banned at the Striezelmarkt in 1910 3.

Prune men were once sold at many Saxon and Thuringian markets, with relatives such as the Zwetschgenmännle in Nuremberg, but only the Dresden Striezelmarkt kept the Pflaumentoffel without a break 14. On the Altmarkt today it also appears as a large figure on the stage and as a Räuchermann (incense smoker) 14.

The traditional version comes with a top hat, a ladder and coloured paper, while newer variants change the details 14. The prunes can be eaten, but most buyers keep the figure on a shelf through Advent as a charm 1 14. The figure has its own festival on Saturday 19 December 2026, followed by the Striezelkinderfest on 20 December 2026, which recalls the children who once sold it 1.

What Is the Free Striezelmarkt Wi-Fi Network on the Altmarkt?

The Dresden Striezelmarkt runs its own free Wi-Fi: for the 2026 edition the network is called striezelmarkt-2026, and it needs no password 5. The city lists it next to the tourist information pavilion on Wilsdruffer Straße, the Christmas post office and the Striezelmarktwache police post 5. It is meant for visitors on the Altmarkt, opposite the Kulturpalast 1 5.

The city also posts live updates. For the arrival of the 23 m fir on the Altmarkt on 31 October 2026, the city announced live updates on its Instagram channel 7. The official Striezelmarkt site also links a WhatsApp channel of the City of Dresden, useful between 25 November and 24 December 2026 1. On parade days, the useful screen is the tram departure board. In December 2025, the Bergparade diverted trams from Postplatz to Pirnaischer Platz between 16:30 and about 17:45 17.

The free network ends at the edge of the market. The S2 ride from Dresden Airport takes 20 minutes to the Hauptbahnhof, and checking in or finding a Neustadt hotel happens far from the Altmarkt hotspot 18. Coverage details for a German data plan are on the Germany eSIM page.

A phone lost in the crowd ends up with the municipal enforcement service (GVD), which passes found items to the city lost-property office 5. In 2025 about 130 items were handed in there, among them wallets and many bank cards 9. Saving the Striezelmarkt service details before the visit helps if the phone itself is the item missing 5.

Frequently asked questions

The name comes from the Striezel, the Middle High German word for the Christstollen that the market still sells 2. By around 1500 the market was called “Striezelmontag” because it was held on the Monday before Christmas, and Dresden housewives bought their festive Striezel from boards laid on handcarts 3.

The Dresdner Stollenmädchen cuts it, and for 2026 the role goes to Ruth Liebscher 6 16. The cut happens shortly after 12:00 on Saturday 5 December 2026, at the stage in front of the Kulturpalast 11. Each Stollenmädchen is a young baker, confectioner or sales trainee chosen after a knowledge test, and she represents Dresden's Stollen bakers for one year 10.

Yes, a Pflaumentoffel is made of dried prunes and is edible 1 14. Most visitors keep it as a lucky charm rather than eat it, since the chimney-sweep figure with top hat and ladder stands for good luck in Dresden 14. The figure has been documented since 1801 and has its own Pflaumentoffel-Fest on the Altmarkt on 19 December 2026 14 1.

Returned mugs go to a central mug-washing station at the Kreuzkirche, on the edge of the Altmarkt 9. In 2025 it cleaned about 760,000 mugs on site, while 65,000 mugs were taken home as souvenirs 9. The washing station was one of the reasons the European Excellent Christmas Market Association praised the market's sustainability when it named it an Excellent European Christmas Market in 2025 9.

Genuine Dresdner Christstollen carries a golden oval seal with a 6-digit number that traces the loaf back to its bakery 12. It also bears the blue and yellow EU symbol for a protected geographical indication 12. Every producer is tested each year from October, and a Stollen needs at least 16 of 20 points to receive the seal 13.

It is a test of the market's illuminations held five days before the opening, at 16:45 on 20 November 2026 on the Altmarkt 1. Visitors are invited to watch the lights come on before any stall opens 1. The 23 m Nordmann fir carries about 260,000 LED lights and a Herrnhut star at the top 7.
