Why a Dead Phone Ruins a Songkran Day

Thai New Year is a festival you walk through, not one you watch from a seat. A typical day runs from a temple at dawn to Silom Road by BTS and on to Khao San Road at night, and every move depends on your phone. Roads close, screening gates move the entrances, and each zone's schedule is posted on city social media rather than on signs.

The crowds that make it fun also choke the network. Bangkok counted about 4.95 million visits across 94 venues on 10–15 April 2026 7. When thousands of people on one road film each other, a weak connection drops just as you need a ride. Treat data as part of your waterproof kit, with an eSIM working from the moment you land.

Booking a Ride When Silom Road Is Closed to Traffic

In 2026, Silom Road closed from the Sala Daeng intersection to the Nararam intersection during the water play 5. A live map shows which side street a car can still reach, and a ride-hailing app fixes the fare and pickup point before you walk out of the soaked zone, instead of bargaining on a flooded kerb.

Regrouping in the Khao San Crush

Inside the 2026 Khao San Road closure, entry ran one way from Chakraphong Road and exits funnelled toward Tanao Road and the Khok Wua intersection 6. A group that gets separated cannot simply turn back. Share live location before you enter, pick a fixed meeting point such as the Bang Lamphu intersection, and remember that wet screens often ignore touches until you dry them.

Reading Thai-Only Menus at Silom Road Food Stalls

The food stalls lining Silom Road and its side lanes often have menus in Thai only. Point your camera translator at the board to order khao chae, som tam or grilled pork without guessing, and to check for peanuts or shrimp paste before you eat.

Calling Home After the Splash Videos Go Viral

Every April, clips of Khao San Road water fights spread across social media, and relatives at home see the worst ones first. A short video call from your hotel each evening settles them, and calling apps over eSIM data cost far less than roaming.

When Is Songkran Festival Thailand in 2027?

The Songkran Festival Thailand dates are fixed: the 2027 holiday runs 13–15 April 2027, Tuesday to Thursday, and all three days are national public holidays 2. If you searched for the 2026 edition, it fell on the same calendar dates, 13–15 April 2026, Monday to Wednesday 3.

The date does not move like Loy Krathong or other lunar holy days, because Thai New Year marks the sun's passage into Aries, the traditional start of the year after the rice harvest 4. The holiday sits on the same three calendar days every year 2 3, so only the weekday changes. Because the 2027 holiday falls mid-week, Time Out Bangkok notes that buses out of Mo Chit fill up days ahead as the capital heads home 2.

Its heart, recognised by UNESCO, is water as a blessing: families bathe Buddha images, pour scented water over elders' hands and make merit at temples 4. The street water fights grew out of that gentle pouring, so a stranger's splash is a wish of good luck.

The three official days are only the core. Cities stretch the programme on both sides:

  • Bangkok: the Tourism Authority of Thailand ran its free World Water Festival at Benchakitti Park on 11–15 April 2026 1.

  • Chiang Mai: the municipality's programme ran 6–17 April 2026, with the water play concentrated on 13–15 April 2026 8 9.

  • Pattaya: Wan Lai, the local finale, fell on 18 April 2026 in Naklua and 19 April 2026 in Pattaya 10.

Organisers had not published their 2027 programmes by October 2026, so expect the same pattern around the fixed core and check the city pages from March.

Tip: Fly in by 12 April 2027 at the latest, because flights, buses and trains out of Bangkok fill early.

How Much Do Bangkok's Ticketed Songkran Water-Music Festivals Cost?

You do not need a ticket for the street water play. Silom Road, Khao San Road, Tha Phae Gate in Chiang Mai and Pattaya's Beach Road are open to anyone who walks in, and the screening gates check bags, not tickets. The Tourism Authority of Thailand's World Water Festival at Benchakitti Park was also free in 2026, including its main stage and nightly drone show 1.

What costs money is the ticketed water-music festivals, which pair DJs with water cannons on a fenced site. Bangkok's biggest one ran on 11–13 April 2026 on a purpose-built site on Ratchadaphisek Road, with tickets at 3,500–7,900 THB depending on days and zone 11. Those 2026 prices were published in March 2026, and the organiser had not announced a 2027 edition by October 2026 11.

How the tickets work:

  • Days: the number of festival days you buy moves the price within that range 11.

  • Zones: the zone you choose on the site also changes the price 11.

  • Tiers: the cheapest early tiers sell out first, so buy as soon as the line-up is out.

  • Resale: resale tickets are a common scam; buy only through the organiser's own channel.

  • Hotel events: pool parties and rooftop events in Chiang Mai and Phuket sell their own tickets through the venue.

Tip: Your ticket QR code is scanned at a wet gate, so save it offline and use a phone pouch that lets the scanner read the screen.

What Paperwork Does Thailand Require for Songkran 2027 Arrivals?

From 15 September 2026, Thailand cut its visa-exemption scheme for ordinary passport holders of 60 countries and territories from 60 days to 30 days 12. Bilateral visa-waiver agreements were left unchanged 12, and Vietnam sits in the bilateral 30-day group, so Vietnamese passport holders still enter visa-free for up to 30 days 13. Anyone staying longer than the exemption needs a tourist visa through the e-visa system before flying 12.

Every foreign arrival must also complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card online within three days before arriving; it has been mandatory for all non-Thai nationals since 1 May 2025 and covers arrivals by air, land and sea 14. Use only the Immigration Bureau's own TDAC portal, because lookalike sites charge a fee for a free form. Arrival halls are busy in the days before 13 April, so a QR code ready on your phone saves time at the counter.

Checklist before you fly for Songkran:

  • Passport valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date, with blank pages 14.

  • Visa or exemption confirmed for your nationality under the rules in force from 15 September 2026 12.

  • TDAC submitted within the three-day window, with the QR code saved offline 14.

  • Return or onward ticket inside your permitted stay 14.

  • Travel insurance that covers medical care and phone damage, which Songkran makes likely.

Note: Visa rules changed twice in 2026, so check the Thai embassy for your country a few weeks before you travel.

How Do You Reach the Songkran Water Zones Once Roads Close?

Khao San Road and Silom Road, Bangkok's classic water-fight streets, are best reached by rail or boat plus a walk. Khao San Road is a 410-metre strip at 13.7589 N, 100.4972 E 19. In 2026 the Phra Nakhon District Office closed nine surrounding roads from noon to midnight on 13–15 April 2026, with entry one way from Chakraphong Road and four screening points 6. Take a Chao Phraya boat to Phra Arthit pier or a taxi to the edge of the closure and walk in.

Silom Road closed from the Sala Daeng intersection to the Nararam intersection in 2026 5. Sala Daeng BTS station sits on the road itself and connects to MRT Si Lom on the Blue Line, so you can step off the train straight into the water. Siam Square, the busiest site in 2026, sits beside Siam BTS station 7. Benchakitti Park is a walk from BTS Asok or MRT Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre 1.

From Suvarnabhumi Airport, the Airport Rail Link runs from the basement to Phaya Thai in 26–30 minutes for 45 THB, from roughly 05:30 to midnight, at September 2026 fares 18. Change at Phaya Thai for the BTS, or at Makkasan for MRT Phetchaburi, a 7–10 minute covered walk 18. From Don Mueang Airport, the SRT Red Line connects to the MRT Blue Line at Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal.

In Chiang Mai, the water play centres on the old-city moat and Tha Phae Gate, on the eastern side of the old walls at 18.7878 N, 98.9933 E 20. Use red songthaew shared trucks or ride-hailing there, and walk the last stretch. Pattaya's water play runs along Beach Road, with Wan Lai events at Naklua Public Park and Wat Chai Mongkol 10.

Tip: Keep small banknotes for the Airport Rail Link ticket machines in a sealed bag, apart from your water-zone cash.

What Time Does the Water Play Start Each Day of Songkran?

Each day of Thai New Year starts quietly at temples and turns loud in the afternoon. Mornings are for merit-making: offering food to monks, bathing Buddha images and building small sand pagodas in temple grounds. Each water zone then sets its own start time.

The 2026 timetable shows the rhythm to expect, zone by zone:

  • Silom Road: traffic stopped at 10:00 on 12 April 2026, a parade set off at 12:00 and water play ran 13:00–21:00 each day 5.

  • Khao San Road: the closure ran from noon to midnight and water play was allowed until 22:00 6.

  • Benchakitti Park: the Songkran 5 Regions zone ran 11:00–22:00 with regional shows, sand pagoda building, Buddha-image bathing and more than 100 food stalls; the water zone and EDM stage ran 16:00–22:00; the main stage ran 17:00–22:00; and more than 1,200 drones closed each night 1.

  • Chiang Mai: a 130-metre water tunnel with lights and DJs filled Tha Phae Road from 18:00 to midnight on 13–15 April 2026 9.

The World Water Festival itself opened on 11 April 2026 with a parade at 18:30 1.

Best moments to be there:

  • Rituals: a neighbourhood temple around dawn, before the heat.

  • Peak water play: Silom Road right after 13:00, when the first trucks roll in 5.

  • Regional culture without the soaking: the 5 Regions zone at Benchakitti Park in the late morning.

  • Night atmosphere: Khao San Road after dark, or the Tha Phae Road tunnel in Chiang Mai.

Tip: Organisers usually publish final hours one or two weeks ahead, so follow the Tourism Authority of Thailand and city pages from late March.

How Crowded Does Silom Road Get at the Peak of Songkran?

13 and 14 April are the peak days in Bangkok. The city recorded about 652,974 visits on Silom Road and about 1.53 million at Siam Square on 10–15 April 2026, out of about 4.95 million visits across 94 venues 7. Expect a crowd level of 5 out of 5 on Silom Road and Khao San Road in the afternoons of 13 and 14 April, 3 out of 5 in the mornings and around 3 out of 5 on 15 April, when many families switch to merit-making.

The pressure point is the entrance. Silom Road's screening gates near BTS Sala Daeng open onto a closed road, and in 2026 the water only started at 13:00 after the midday parade, so people who arrived in the morning waited in the sun 5. Stepping out for a toilet or a drink means queuing again.

How early to arrive:

  • Silom Road: be at the screening gates near BTS Sala Daeng shortly before the water starts; the queue builds during the midday parade.

  • Khao San Road: arrive mid-afternoon; the queue at the Chakraphong Road entrance grows after dark.

  • Temples: go at dawn, when monks receive alms and the air is cooler.

  • Chiang Mai moat: late morning, before the hottest hours.

Tip: Agree on a meeting point outside the closure, such as the BTS Sala Daeng exit, before you pass the screening gate.

What Should You Wear for 35°C Songkran Water Fights?

April is the hottest month of the Thai year, and that is why the water feels so good. In Bangkok, average daily highs in April are about 35°C and lows about 27°C, and almost every day counts as muggy 16. The chance of a wet day rises from about 18% at the start of April to 34% at the end 16, so a short evening storm is possible but rarely spoils the day. Chiang Mai is hotter by day and cooler by night, with an average April high near 36°C and a low near 23°C 17.

You will be soaked, dried by the sun and soaked again, so dress for water rather than for the city. Markets sell water guns and pouches in the days before 13 April; a simple pump gun is enough.

What to wear and pack:

  • Quick-drying clothes in dark colours; wet white shirts turn see-through.

  • Sandals or water shoes with grip; flip-flops slip on wet tarmac.

  • Swimming goggles, because Chiang Mai's moat water and iced water hurt the eyes.

  • Waterproof sunscreen, a hat and a dry change of clothes in a sealed bag.

  • A scarf or light shirt to cover your shoulders inside temples.

  • A clear phone pouch on a lanyard, tested with wet fingers before you go out.

Tip: Drink before you are thirsty, because being soaked hides how much you sweat. Save the Tourist Police number 1155 and the medical emergency number 1669 before you go out 15.

Is Silom or Banglamphu the Better Songkran Base?

Stay one rail stop or a short walk from the water, not in the middle of it. Banglamphu puts you a few lanes from Khao San Road, so you can walk to the water, but music runs until midnight and cars cannot reach the door while the roads around Khao San Road are closed 6. Silom and Sathorn put you next to BTS Sala Daeng and MRT Si Lom, so you can walk to Silom Road and still take the train across the city.

For most first-timers, Silom is the better base: the rail links keep working when the roads close, and you can reach Benchakitti Park, Siam Square and the airport without a car.

Other bases worth considering:

  • Asok and Sukhumvit: for Benchakitti Park and the drone show, with easy BTS and MRT links.

  • Chiang Mai old city: walk to the moat and Tha Phae Gate, though water is thrown at every doorway; Nimmanhaemin, to the west, is quieter.

  • Naklua or Jomtien in Pattaya: near the Wan Lai events without sleeping on Beach Road.

Room prices rise sharply for the holiday, and Chiang Mai sells out first.

How to book:

  • Book as soon as your flights are fixed; by March only expensive rooms are left.

  • Choose free cancellation, since festival hours and road closures are confirmed late.

  • Ask about late check-in and luggage storage; closed roads can delay arrival.

Tip: Save your hotel address in Thai script; drivers navigate faster from Thai text.

Mobile Data When Bangkok's Songkran Crowds Swamp the Wi-Fi

Count on mobile data, not public Wi-Fi, during Songkran. Festival zones and shopping centres offer free Wi-Fi, but those hotspots slow down when crowds this size gather: Bangkok recorded about 4.95 million visits across 94 venues on 10–15 April 2026 7. Your own data line keeps maps and group calls working when the hotspot gives up.

Maps, ride-hailing, messaging and camera translation use little data; video calls, uploading clips from Silom Road and sharing a hotspot with your group use most of it. Size your plan to how much video you will post. An eSIM also avoids the SIM counter queue at Suvarnabhumi Airport during the holiday rush. You can compare Thailand eSIM plans and install yours at home over Wi-Fi.

What you will use data for at the festival:

  • Maps that show which streets around Sala Daeng, Banglamphu and Tha Phae Gate are closed.

  • Ride-hailing to a pickup point outside the closure zone at night.

  • Live location to regroup after the crowd splits you up.

  • QR payments at stalls that show a Thai QR code.

Before you go out, download offline maps of Bangkok and Chiang Mai, carry a small power bank in a sealed bag, and screenshot your TDAC QR code and hotel address.

Tip: Turn off mobile data on your home SIM before you land and keep it on only for your eSIM, so you can still receive bank codes by text without paying roaming charges.

Frequently asked questions

Rod Nam Dum Hua is the Songkran ritual of pouring scented water over the hands of parents, grandparents and respected elders to ask for their blessing 4. Families hold it at home or at a temple. Visitors can join when a Thai host invites them: sit lower than the elder and pour gently over the hands, never the head.

The image is kept at Wat Phra Singh, at the western end of Chiang Mai's old city. During Songkran it is carried through the old city with other revered Buddha images, and people line the route to splash water on it 8. Arrive early, use a bowl rather than a gun, and cover your shoulders.

Yes. Chiang Mai's celebration runs longer and feels more traditional, centred on the old-city moat and Tha Phae Gate, with a programme that ran 6–17 April 2026 8. Bangkok is bigger and more party-like, with closed streets, ticketed music festivals and the BTS and MRT between zones.

No. Bangkok's rules for the Silom Road zone in 2026 banned high-pressure water guns, powder and alcohol, and they were checked at the screening gates 5. Bring a simple pump gun or a bowl, and leave large pressure guns bought at markets in your room, because they can be confiscated at the entrance.

Yes. In 2026 the World Water Festival at Benchakitti Park had a regional culture zone with sand pagodas, shows and food stalls from 11:00, and a separate water zone from 16:00 1. It is calmer than Silom Road at peak hours; fit children with swimming goggles.

Yes. Songkran water is a blessing, but monks, elders, babies and motorbike riders are off limits for water guns. Inside temple grounds, put the gun away and pour water gently over Buddha images, or over an elder's hands only when you are invited 4.

No visa: Vietnamese passport holders enter Thailand visa-free for up to 30 days under a bilateral agreement, which the 15 September 2026 changes left in place 12 13. You still need the Thailand Digital Arrival Card, submitted within three days before arrival, and a passport valid for six months 14.
