What Goes Wrong When Your Phone Dies on Queen's Parade?

A Shaw day in Niagara-on-the-Lake is stitched together from small fixed points: a coach that leaves Toronto once in the morning, a café that opens 90 minutes before the curtain, a shuttle with a last run in the early evening, and a parking meter that will not take your credit card 7 9 15 6. Each one is managed on a phone.

The three theatres sit in a small heritage town, so walking between the Festival Theatre on Queen's Parade and the Court House Theatre on Queen Street is easy. What is not easy is recovering from a dead phone. Ticket emails, the WEGO bus timetable, a pinned table at a winery and messages to friends seated in another section all disappear at once. Visitors flying into Toronto also arrive without a Canadian number, then drive the QEW into the Niagara fruit belt with whatever roaming their home carrier offers. A data plan that works from the airport onward keeps the day on schedule, from the Royal York pickup to the last curtain call.

Pulling Up Your Order Email at the Court House Doors

The Court House Theatre grounds open only 30 minutes before a performance, and its 248 seats fill in that short window 3 5. The box office can reprint tickets at any time, even on the day, but the fastest route is having the order email open as the ushers start seating 3.

Catching the Last Orange Line Shuttle From Fort George

Visitors arriving on GO Transit reach town on the WEGO Orange Line 604, and the last return shuttle left Fort George at 7 p.m. in 2026 15. Live departure times on a phone decide whether a matinee ends with a relaxed dinner or a taxi hunt on Queen's Parade.

Feeding a Heritage District Meter Through Honk Mobile

Town parking machines in the Heritage District no longer accept credit cards, only coins, the Honk Mobile app or a QR code 6. Paying through Honk adds a $0.25 convenience fee and lets you top up from your seat at intermission rather than running back to the car 6.

Deathtrap Previews on 31 March to A Christmas Carol on 23 December 2027

The Shaw Festival 2027 season runs from 31 March to 23 December 2027 in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, opening with previews of Deathtrap at the Court House Theatre on 31 March 1. It is the 65th season, and the four productions that open first are officially launched over opening weekend on 28 to 30 May 2027 1.

Most of the main season closes between 8 and 10 October 2027, while the Festival Theatre musicals continue to the end of October; South Pacific closes on 30 October 2027 1. A holiday season follows from 18 November to 23 December 2027, with A Christmas Carol starting on 19 November 1 2.

Older planning lists describe the Shaw as an April to October festival. For 2027 that shorthand misses both ends: previews start on 31 March and the holiday programme carries the season to 23 December 1. Because this is repertory theatre, each play alternates with others through the week, so you pick a play and a date rather than a festival weekend.

The Royal George Theatre is not part of the 2027 season: it was demolished in June 2026, and its larger replacement on the same Queen Street site is set to reopen in fall 2028 11.

Searches for the previous edition are answered too: the 2026 season ran from 2 April to 23 December 2026 12.

  • Season opens: 31 March 2027, Deathtrap previews 1

  • Opening weekend: 28 to 30 May 2027 1

  • Most plays close: 8 to 10 October 2027 1

  • South Pacific closes: 30 October 2027 1

  • Holiday season: 18 November to 23 December 2027 1

Tip: The festival marks every date as subject to change, so check the performance calendar for your play before booking a room in Niagara-on-the-Lake 1.

What Does a Seat for South Pacific Cost at the Festival Theatre?

A regular-performance seat for South Pacific or The Color Purple at the Festival Theatre costs $182 in Platinum, $153 in Gold, $113 in Blue and $48 in Purple for the 2027 season, before tax and a $15 handling fee per order 3. Every play is ticketed separately; there is no festival-wide pass at the gate.

Shaw Festival 2027 prices in Niagara-on-the-Lake fall into three bands 3:

  • Musicals, regular: $182, $153, $113, $48 3

  • Musicals, previews: $129, $109, $80, $40 3

  • Non-musicals, regular: $161, $137, $99, $44 3

  • Family shows (Grimm Tales, A Christmas Carol), regular: $106, $88, $60, $44 3

  • Youth tickets: $25 unless stated otherwise 3

Previews are the cheapest way into a new production, because the same seats cost far less before the official opening 3. Discount routes listed for 2027 include $35 Blue seats for anyone 35 and under, senior tickets from $44 on marked performances, and a family package of two adults and two youth for $119 on Grimm Tales or A Christmas Carol 4. Multi-play packages save 15% on three shows, 20% on five and 25% on seven 4. A 2027 Season's Pass, capped at 1,000 passes, costs $675 in Gold or $800 in Platinum for ten plays 4.

Sales open to Friends of The Shaw on 7 November 2026 and to the public on 8 December 2026, through the box office or the official website 1. Friends can also reserve 60 days before any performance, against 30 days for everyone else 4. The Shaw does not authorise resale platforms, and tickets bought there may not be honoured 3.

Tip: Early prices are guaranteed only for orders placed by 31 January 2027, so book a summer musical before February 3.

How Do You Reach the Festival Theatre on Queen's Parade From Toronto?

The Shaw's flagship Festival Theatre stands at 10 Queen's Parade, Niagara-on-the-Lake, and the festival advises allowing at least two hours for the drive from Toronto along the QEW 5 6. The Jackie Maxwell Studio Theatre shares the same building, while the Court House Theatre is at 26 Queen Street, a short walk into the old town 5.

For satnav, the festival suggests the Memorial Clock Tower at 26 Queen Street, right in front of the Court House Theatre 6. Drivers from Toronto leave the QEW at exit 38B, and those coming from Niagara Falls head north on the Niagara River Parkway 17. Niagara Stone Road between Line 1 and East West Line is under construction until spring 2027 6.

Without a car, there are three common routes:

  • Shaw Express coach: $39 a ride, leaving Toronto's Royal York Hotel on York Street at 9am and Burlington's 430 John Street, returning from town at 4pm 7

  • Double-show days marked B+ keep the coach in town until about 10pm 7

  • GO Transit to Niagara Falls GO Station, then WEGO Green Line 603 to the Floral Clock and Orange Line 604 to Fort George, on a GO+WEGO combo ticket from $22 round trip in 2026 15

Fort George is a 7-minute walk from Queen Street 15. VIA Rail also serves Niagara Falls 17. The Shaw Express must be booked with a theatre ticket for the same date and takes no walk-ons 7.

Visitors from the United States cross at the Queenston-Lewiston Bridge, the Rainbow Bridge or the Peace Bridge, and border lineups can add delay 6. Most visa-exempt travellers flying in need an eTA, which costs CAN$7 19.

Parking at the Festival Theatre costs $25 per performance, with street meters and Fort George as alternatives 6.

Tip: The Festival Theatre grounds open one hour before a performance and the Court House grounds 30 minutes before, so time the drive to arrive inside that window 3.

Which Eleven Plays Make Up the 2027 Shaw Playbill?

The 2027 main season at the Shaw Festival has eleven productions across the Festival Theatre, the Court House Theatre and the Jackie Maxwell Studio Theatre, and for the first time in its history two musicals share the Festival Theatre stage 11 1.

Festival Theatre, about 856 seats 5:

  • South Pacific, directed by Nina Lee Aquino: previews 10 April 2027 1

  • Arsenic and Old Lace, directed by Jackie Maxwell: previews 9 May 2027 1

  • The Color Purple, directed by Kimberley Rampersad: previews 26 June 2027 1

  • Jumpers by Tom Stoppard, directed by Tim Carroll: previews 11 August 2027 1

Court House Theatre, 248 seats 5:

  • Deathtrap: 31 March to 8 October 2027 1

  • Arms and the Man: 28 April to 9 October 2027 1

  • Grimm Tales: 9 June to 10 October 2027 1

  • Agatha Christie's The Rats and The Patient: 11 September to 10 October 2027 1

Jackie Maxwell Studio Theatre, about 267 seats 5:

  • What Every Woman Knows: 20 May to 10 October 2027 1

  • Goblin: Pygmalion: 16 June to 10 October 2027 1

  • Intimate Apparel: 5 August to 9 October 2027 1

Arms and the Man is the first Bernard Shaw play at the Court House Theatre since 2017, on the stage where the festival began in 1962 1. Goblin: Pygmalion comes from Spontaneous Theatre, the team behind the improvised Murder-on-the-Lake, so no two performances run the same way 1. Grimm Tales, Carol Ann Duffy's retelling, keeps the gruesome original endings of Cinderella and Hansel and Gretel 1.

The festival itself dates from 1962, when Brian Doherty and Calvin Rand staged eight weekends of Don Juan in Hell and Candida in the Court House, and the Festival Theatre on Queen's Parade opened on 12 June 1973 13. Its mandate grew from Shaw's own plays to work written during his lifetime, 1856 to 1950, and later to plays set in that period; Tim Carroll has been artistic director since 2017 13.

Around the plays, the festival runs more than 5,000 Beyond the Stage events, classes and activities each year, from backstage tours to coffee concerts 1.

Tip: All eleven plays overlap only from 11 September to 8 October 2027, which makes two plays a day easiest to schedule then 1.

Why Does September Suit a Niagara-on-the-Lake Matinee Best?

September gives Niagara-on-the-Lake average highs of 21.0C and lows of 12.2C, warm enough for patio lunches and cool enough for the walk between theatres 14. From 11 September 2027 every play in the Shaw Festival 2027 playbill is running at once 1.

Average conditions through the season, from Environment Canada normals 14:

  • April: high 10.9C, low 2.4C 14

  • May: high 17.6C, low 7.5C 14

  • July: high 26.3C, low 17.0C, the warmest month 14

  • September: high 21.0C, 91.8 mm of precipitation, the wettest month of the season 14

  • October: high 14.8C, low 6.5C 14

  • December: high 2.2C, low -3.8C 14

Crowd level by period, on a 1 to 5 scale: late March to mid-May rates 2, with mostly previews; opening weekend on 28 to 30 May 2027 rates 4; July and August rate 5 as Toronto and US day-trippers add to the theatre crowds; September rates 4; the December holiday shows rate 3. These ratings are an editorial planning guide, not official figures.

Arrival matters more than at a city theatre. The grounds open one hour before at the Festival Theatre and 30 minutes before at the Court House, and wheelchair users are asked to arrive at least 30 minutes early 3 8. The festival also warns that weekend and summer traffic plus parking take extra time 6.

Relaxed performances, where moving, talking and taking breaks are expected, are scheduled for South Pacific at 7 pm on 14 October 2027 and A Christmas Carol at 1 pm on 5 December 2027 8. The Festival Theatre has four on-site accessible parking spaces and an elevator to the mezzanine and balcony, but the front of the orchestra is down a long flight of stairs 8.

The theatres are air-conditioned, and the box office suggests a sweater or shawl even in July 3. Casual or dress clothes are both fine 3.

Tip: A September weekday matinee pairs mild weather with the full playbill and avoids the July crush on Queen Street 14 1.

Which Streets Around Queen Street Keep the Theatres Walkable?

Staying inside the Heritage District around Queen Street and Queen's Parade puts all three Shaw theatres on foot, since the Festival Theatre and the Jackie Maxwell Studio share 10 Queen's Parade and the Court House Theatre sits at 26 Queen Street 5. The festival's accommodation list describes several inns and bed-and-breakfasts as steps from, or five minutes' walk to, the theatres 10.

The historic centre is a provincial Heritage Conservation District, designated in 1986, and a National Historic Site since 2003, which is why lodging there leans to heritage inns and small guesthouses rather than towers 14. Niagara-on-the-Lake was also the first capital of Upper Canada, under the name Newark, from 1792 to 1797 14.

Lodging types that suit a Shaw Festival stay in Niagara-on-the-Lake:

  • Heritage District inns: walk to every theatre 10

  • Bed-and-breakfasts with breakfast and parking included 10

  • Vacation rentals for groups seeing several plays 10

  • Resort hotels outside the centre, a short drive away 10

  • Theatre-and-room packages through the festival's listed package partner 10

Niagara Falls, Ontario, is the fallback when the old town is full, linked by the Niagara River Parkway or the WEGO buses 17 15. The WEGO shuttle stops early in the evening, so an evening show and a Niagara Falls bed usually mean driving or a taxi 15.

The festival publishes no room rates; every listing on its accommodation page is a paid advertisement 10. Book as soon as you hold tickets, since rooms within walking distance go first for opening weekend on 28 to 30 May 2027 1.

Tip: Several inns near the theatres include parking, which saves the $25 Festival Theatre lot fee on every performance 10 6.

How Do You Keep Data Running Along the Niagara River Border?

A Shaw Festival visit in Niagara-on-the-Lake runs on mobile data more than most theatre trips: ticket emails, Honk Mobile parking, the WEGO timetable and border wait times all live online 3 6 15. The town sits on the Niagara River across from New York State, and three bridges connect the two countries nearby 6.

Phones near the river can switch to a network on the opposite bank, which is the classic border surprise on a roaming bill. A Canadian plan keeps the phone on a Canadian network along the river; coverage details are on the Canada eSIM page.

What needs data on a typical day:

  • Ticket emails or the order confirmation, which the box office can reprint if needed 3

  • Honk Mobile meter payments in the Heritage District 6

  • WEGO departure times for the Orange Line from Fort George 15

  • Border wait times from the Canada Border Services Agency before crossing 6

  • Messages to your group at intermission, when the Festival Theatre patio fills 9

Data use is light, because maps, messages and email matter more than streaming. Download offline maps of the Heritage District and save screenshots of booking numbers as a backup.

The Festival Theatre's assisted-listening system runs over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth with compatible hearing aids and headphones, so check your phone settings before the curtain if you plan to use it 8.

Tip: Silence your phone before the play starts; the festival welcomes photos before the show, at intermission and afterwards, but not during the performance 3.

How Does Icewine Country Fit Around a Shaw Matinee?

The vineyards of the Niagara-on-the-Lake appellation start at the edge of town, so a morning tasting before a matinee is a normal Shaw Festival day out 18. Vidal is the grape behind most of the region's icewine, and the first Ontario Vidal icewine vintage dates to 1984 18.

Wineries here pour Riesling, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Baco Noir alongside the dessert wines 18. Tours and seated tastings at the larger estates are worth booking ahead, especially on Saturdays 18.

On site, the Festival Theatre café opens 90 minutes before both matinee and evening performances and closes at the end of intermission 9. It sells picnic lunch boxes for $8 to $16 and drinks for $3.50 to $15, including Niagara wine and local beer 9. At the Jackie Maxwell Studio Theatre you can pre-order your intermission drink so it is waiting for you 20. The Shawp, the theatre store, stays open year-round 9.

Easy additions to a theatre day in Niagara-on-the-Lake:

  • Fort George at 51 Queens Parade, a War of 1812 post with redcoat musket demonstrations 16

  • The Heritage District shops along Queen Street 14

  • A fudge shop trading since 1967 for take-home treats 9

  • The Niagara River Parkway south toward Niagara Falls 17

Plan a designated driver or the WEGO bus before tasting, since the theatres, the wineries and Fort George are spread along country roads beyond the old town.

Tip: Book a winery for late morning, eat lunch from the theatre café on the patio, then walk into the matinee with time to spare 9.

Frequently asked questions

Public sales for the 2027 season open on 8 December 2026, through the Shaw box office or the official website 1. Friends of The Shaw could order from 7 November 2026, with staggered dates by membership level 1 2. Early prices hold for orders placed by 31 January 2027 3.

No. The old Royal George Theatre on Queen Street was demolished in June 2026, and a new, larger theatre is being built on the same site, set to reopen in fall 2028 11. In 2027 the Shaw plays at the Festival Theatre, the Court House Theatre and the Jackie Maxwell Studio Theatre 1.

Opening weekend runs from 28 to 30 May 2027, when the first four productions officially open: Arsenic and Old Lace, Deathtrap, South Pacific and Arms and the Man 1. Expect the busiest Queen Street hotels of the spring and book rooms as soon as you hold tickets for those dates.

Grimm Tales is priced as a family show, with a family package of two adults and two youth for $119 4. The festival warns that these stories have teeth and keep their gruesome endings 1. Every child needs a ticket, babes-in-arms are not admitted, and the box office gives age advice 3.

Sleuth opened the 64th season at the Court House Theatre in 2026 12. That season runs from 2 April to 23 December 2026 12. Its holiday programme paired Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella with A Year with Frog and Toad, both running to 23 December 2026 2.

Yes, if you want live updates. The Shaw Express leaves the Royal York Hotel at 9am, and the festival says return times can shift with performance running times, so live messages and ticket emails matter on the road 7. Messages about a changed return time reach phones on a Canadian network without roaming onto the New York side of the river.
