Why Does a Dead Phone Cost You the Boac Via Crucis?

Holy Week in Marinduque is spread across six towns, and the schedule shifts from parish to parish, so the phone in your pocket is your programme, your map and your ferry ticket at once. The Good Friday Via Crucis in Boac moves along Gov. D. Reyes Street at midday, and the procession was set for 12:00 on 3 April 2026 3. Miss the update that a Senakulo has moved from the Moriones Arena to the riverbed, and you end up in an empty square while the crowd is a kilometre away.

Penitents in masks are not there to give directions, and many locals spend the Triduum in church or keeping quiet, because Good Friday is treated as the most solemn day of the year 6. Shops and small businesses close or shorten their hours from Maundy Thursday 6. That leaves your phone to answer the practical questions: where the next jeepney stops, which town stages the Pugutan tonight, and how to get back to your room in Gasan or Mogpog after dark. Rotational brownouts are possible during the week, so a full power bank matters as much as a signal 3.

How Do You Regroup After a Morion Chase on Boac's Streets?

Morions chase children, onlookers and visitors with their spears as they parade, beating the wooden kalutang 5. One chase is enough to scatter a group across side streets near the Boac Cathedral plaza. Drop a pin at a fixed meeting point before the parade arrives, and share live location so nobody has to shout over the clatter.

Can You Find a Jeepney Out of Balanacan After 6 PM?

Jeepneys to the farther towns mostly stop running around 6 PM 7. If your ferry from Dalahican Port lands late, you will need to message a tricycle driver or your host from the pier at Balanacan Port in Mogpog. A tricycle to Boac costs PHP 200–300, so confirm the price by text before you climb in 7.

How Do You Check Which Town Stages the Pugutan Today?

Each town runs its own Pugutan, the beheading of Longinus, and the days differ. In 2026 one guide listed Boac's on Black Saturday and Mogpog's at noon on Easter Sunday 3. Parish and municipal pages post changes on the day, so checking them from the road is how you avoid travelling to the wrong town.

When Is Moriones Festival in 2027?

The Moriones Festival 2027 is expected to run from Holy Monday 22 March to Easter Sunday 28 March 2027, with Good Friday on 26 March 2027 1 2. Marinduque has not yet published the 2027 town-by-town programme, so treat the exact hours as expected until the provincial and municipal tourism offices release them.

The dates move every year because the festival is tied to Holy Week, which follows Easter, and Easter falls on a different Sunday each spring. Morions walk the towns for seven days, from Holy Monday to Easter Sunday, searching for Longinus, the centurion who converted at the cross 1. In some towns the climax comes on Easter Monday instead of Sunday 1.

For reference, the 2026 edition ran from Palm Sunday 29 March to Easter Sunday 5 April 2026, with the entry of the morions in Gasan and Boac on Palm Sunday 3. The heaviest crowds in 2026 came on Maundy Thursday 2 April and Good Friday 3 April 2026 3.

The key days in 2027 fall like this:

  • Holy Monday 22 March 2027: morions begin roaming the streets 5

  • Maundy Thursday 25 March 2027: national holiday, start of the Triduum 6

  • Good Friday 26 March 2027: Via Crucis and Santo Sepulcro observance 1 2

  • Black Saturday 27 March 2027: national holiday, Pugutan in some towns 3 6

  • Easter Sunday 28 March 2027: Salubong at dawn, chase and Pugutan 1 5

The festival is not a separate public holiday, but Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Black Saturday are national holidays, and Holy Wednesday is one of the busiest travel days in the Philippines 6. That is why ferries out of Lucena fill up before the Triduum begins.

Tip: Locals call the observance Moryonan rather than a festival, and the word was only popularised by the media in the 1960s 1. Searching for “Moryonan” on local pages turns up schedules that tourist sites miss.

Is the Senakulo at the Moriones Arena in Boac Free to Watch?

Yes: street events of the Moriones Festival cost nothing, and general admission to the Senakulo in Boac was free in 2026 3. There is no ticketing system for the morion parades, the Via Crucis or the chase of Longinus, because they happen on public roads and in church grounds.

The Senakulo is the staged passion play. In 2026, Part 1 was listed at the Moriones Arena in Boac on Holy Wednesday 1 April 2026 3. Reserved or VIP seating for the Senakulo is arranged in advance with the local government, reportedly through the Boac Municipal Tourism Office 3. The same 2026 guide noted that the Senakulo and Pugutan venue, arena or riverbed, was not confirmed ahead of time, and advised checking at the tourism assistance desk on arrival 3.

In Gasan, the town's cenaculo is staged at Guingona Park on Good Friday 13. Mogpog, where the observance began in the 19th century under its parish priest Father Dionisio Santiago, holds its own programme too 1 18.

What you pay for is everything around the free events:

  • A spot in the shade: arcades and ground floors along Gov. D. Reyes Street fill by mid-morning on Good Friday 3

  • Transport between towns, since each one stages events on different days

  • Souvenir masks, which carvers sell at the end of the festival 5

  • Food and water on long days in the heat

Tip: If you want a seat for the Senakulo rather than standing at the back, contact the Boac Municipal Tourism Office before Holy Week, not on the night.

How Do You Get From Lucena's Dalahican Port to Boac?

The usual route to the Moriones Festival is a bus from Manila to Lucena, then a ferry from Dalahican Port to Balanacan Port in Mogpog, then a jeepney to Boac 7. No commercial airline currently serves Marinduque Airport in Barangay Masiga, Gasan, so the sea route is the main option 7 8 9.

Buses to Lucena leave from terminals on Buendia in Pasay and in Kamias and Kamuning in Quezon City, with some running around the clock 7. At Dalahican Port, buy your ferry ticket and pay the PHP 30 terminal fee 7. The crossing to Balanacan Port takes 3–4 hours, and the regular fare was PHP 470 in 2025, with student, senior and child fares lower 7.

From Balanacan Port, Boac is about 20 km away 3. Jeepneys and vans wait at the port exit with destinations called out, and the fare is at most PHP 100 per person 7. If none are left, a tricycle to Boac costs PHP 200–300 7. Santa Cruz is 29 km from Boac, and jeepneys run there via Boac 20.

  • Door-to-door bus packages from Manila cost PHP 1,300 per person in May 2024, including the ferry and local jeepney, and take 10–14 hours 7

  • Maundy Thursday queues at Dalahican Port exceeded 4 hours in 2026 reports 3

  • A riskier alternative runs via Batangas, Calapan and Pinamalayan in Mindoro to Gasan by boat 14

  • Ferries can be suspended in bad weather, so check the forecast the day before 7

The Statue of Our Lady of Biglang Awa stands on a mound above Balanacan, so you know you are close when it appears over the bow 10.

Tip: Travel on Holy Tuesday or early Holy Wednesday rather than Maundy Thursday, when ticket lines are longest 3.

What Happens on Each Day Before the Pugutan of Longinus?

The Moriones Festival is a week-long re-enactment of the story of Longinus, the half-blind Roman centurion whose sight was restored by blood from Christ's side, who converted, and who was hunted and beheaded by his fellow soldiers 1 5. The week builds slowly, and the climax is the chase and the Pugutan.

From Holy Monday, morions start roaming the towns in pairs and groups 5. By midweek they parade through town beating two sticks called the kalutang, chasing children and visitors with their spears 5. The kalutang was recognised by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts as intangible cultural heritage in 2011, and Gasan is known for it 8.

Good Friday is the solemn centre of the week. Flagellants perform penance, the crucifixion re-enactment takes place at 3 p.m., and the town stops to mourn 5. The Santo Sepulcro observance follows in the afternoon 1. Pabasa, the chanted Pasyon, usually ends before 15:00 that day 6.

On Easter Sunday the action resumes with the habulan, the chase. Longinus runs through fields and, in Boac, over the rocks of a dried riverbed, and is caught three times, escaping twice 5. In the evening he is tried before Pontius Pilate on an open stage in Tagalog verse, professes his faith and is beheaded 5. His one-eyed mask is raised on a sword, and the morions carry his body on a shield to the church 5.

The 2026 Boac programme in one guide looked like this 3:

  • Holy Monday and Tuesday: morions roam Boac's streets

  • Holy Wednesday: Senakulo Part 1 at the Moriones Arena

  • Maundy Thursday: mock skirmishes known as the Battle of Moriones

  • Good Friday: Via Crucis at noon, Santo Sepulcro procession at night from Boac Cathedral

  • Black Saturday: Pugutan in Boac

  • Easter Sunday: Salubong at dawn and Pugutan at noon in Mogpog Poblacion

Tip: Stand back from the riverbed edge during the habulan; Longinus and his pursuers run over loose rock and do not stop for spectators.

How Hot Is Boac During Holy Week?

Boac in March averages daily highs of 29°C and lows of 22°C, with about 44 mm of rain over the month 11. April is warmer, at 31°C highs and 23°C lows with about 37 mm of rain 11. Holy Week in 2027 falls in late March, so expect the March pattern with April heat creeping in on the street at noon.

Marinduque has a Type III climate, without a sharply defined dry or wet season, and an annual mean temperature of 27.0°C with 78% average humidity 8. Rain does fall in Holy Week: Mogpog and Gasan record about 11.9 rainy days in March 10 13. Showers tend to be short, but they make the dried riverbed in Boac slippery.

Crowd level is at its peak on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, around 5 on a 1–5 scale, and noticeably lighter on Holy Monday and Tuesday 3. For the Good Friday Via Crucis on Gov. D. Reyes Street, the 2026 guide advised being in place between 9:00 and 10:30 to claim shade 3.

What the heat means in practice:

  • Morions themselves wear armour weighing at least 20 kg, with eye holes half a centimetre wide 19

  • Midday events on stone and concrete streets feel much hotter than the average high

  • Carry water and refill often; single-use plastic is restricted in Boac 3

  • A wide-brimmed hat or umbrella helps more than sunscreen alone 3

Tip: Arrive in Boac on Holy Tuesday, walk the route in the cool of the evening, and save your energy for Good Friday and the Pugutan.

Which Marinduque Town Makes the Best Base for the Moriones?

Boac is the best base for the Moriones Festival because the Via Crucis, the Senakulo and one of the main Pugutan stagings take place there, and it is the provincial capital 3 8. The town is small, with 54,365 residents in the 2024 census, so rooms run out early 11.

In 2026, rooms in Boac were reported fully booked by January 3. Upper-range rooms near Boac were quoted at about PHP 4,500 a night in 2026, and two nights of budget lodging ran PHP 3,000–4,500 per person 3. Book as soon as Easter dates are known, which for 2027 means booking for the nights around 22 to 28 March 2027 2.

Your options by town:

  • Boac: central for Gov. D. Reyes Street and the cathedral, noisy, sells out first 3

  • Gasan: quieter beachfront stays, a 20–30 minute jeepney or van ride to the Moriones Arena 3

  • Mogpog: close to Balanacan Port and to the Easter Sunday Pugutan in Mogpog Poblacion 3 10

  • Santa Cruz: 29 km from Boac, better as a base for the islands after the festival 20

After Easter, many visitors move on to Maniwaya Island off Santa Cruz, a 30–45 minute boat ride from Buyabod Port, where the one-hectare Palad Sandbar appears at low tide 16. Mount Malindig, the island's 1,157 m volcano, rises at the southern tip 8.

The Boac Cathedral, dedicated in 1792 and declared an Important Cultural Property in 2018, sits at the centre of town and is the anchor for most processions 12. Staying within walking distance of it saves you a jeepney ride on the busiest days.

Boac had water pipe excavation in 2026, and taps in some properties ran dry 3. Before paying a deposit, ask whether the property has its own water tank.

Tip: Jeepneys to the farther towns mostly stop around 6 PM, so if you stay outside Boac, plan your return from the evening Pugutan before it starts 7.

Will Your Phone Hold Signal Along Gov. D. Reyes Street on Good Friday?

Mobile signal in Boac is generally stable in the town centre, but data slows during the Good Friday crowds on Gov. D. Reyes Street and drops in interior barangays and along parts of the coast 3. One travel guide reports that signal is not a problem around the island while Wi-Fi is patchy 14. Plan on mobile data rather than hotel or cafe Wi-Fi.

The heaviest data moments at the Moriones Festival are predictable. You check the day's programme each morning, because Senakulo and Pugutan venues can change. You use maps to move between Boac, Gasan and Mogpog. You share live location when a morion chase splits your group. And you send video home after the Pugutan in the evening.

A Philippines data plan installed before you leave Manila means you step off the ferry at Balanacan Port already online, without hunting for a SIM shop in a town where many businesses close from Maundy Thursday 6. A Philippines eSIM is installed on your phone before you travel and switches on when you land.

How to keep your phone useful all week:

  • Download offline maps of Boac, Mogpog and Gasan before you leave Dalahican Port 3

  • Carry a 20,000 mAh power bank, since rotational brownouts are possible 3

  • Upload long videos at night rather than in the Via Crucis crowd

  • Save your host's number and address offline in case data stalls

  • Note the national emergency number, 911, in case you need help in the crowd 4

Tip: Screenshot the Senakulo and Pugutan schedule each morning, so you still have it if the network slows at noon.

How Should Visitors Behave Around a Morion Keeping a Panata?

Treat every morion as a penitent first and a performer second: each one is keeping a panata, a vow made in thanks for answered prayers or for healing, livelihood or a good harvest 17 18. The local Moryonan has been called a solemn socio-cultural observance rather than a tourist attraction 17.

The mask is part of the sacrifice. It hides the wearer's identity, and the helmet limits hearing, so a morion may not notice you calling out 18 19. New morions must learn to walk in heavy caligae boots 19. Masks are carved from soft dapdap or santol wood, given layers of primer and painted, and take a couple of months to finish 17. Mogpog penitents decorate their turbante headgear with Bulaklakang Moryon flowers, considered the original design 17.

The practice is predominantly male and organised through fraternities 17. It was renamed the Moriones Festival in the 1970s to promote tourism, and in 2012 it was added to the Philippine intangible cultural heritage inventory 17.

Do and avoid:

  • Do not try to lift or touch a morion's mask

  • Ask before photographing a penitent up close, especially flagellants on Good Friday

  • Keep quiet in church grounds during the Triduum and the Santo Sepulcro procession 6

  • Expect no meat dishes at many homes on Good Friday, as eating meat that day is considered bad luck 6

  • Laugh along when a morion chases you with a spear; it is part of the story 5

Tip: Dress modestly on Good Friday, with covered shoulders and knees, if you plan to enter Boac Cathedral after the Via Crucis.

Which Marinduque Sweets Should You Try During Holy Week?

Arrowroot cookies are the snack to look for during the Moriones Festival: small, crumbly biscuits made from local arrowroot flour, known elsewhere as uraro and sold in original and pinipig flavours 15. They are gluten-free and keep well, which makes them the standard pasalubong to carry back on the ferry 15.

Marinduque's coconut cakes are the other speciality. Bibingkang lalaki is made with tuba, coconut wine, instead of yeast, giving it a moist, pudding-like texture, and it is sold at the Boac Market 14 15. Bibingkang kanin uses whole rice grains 15. Santa Cruz is known for bibingkang pinahiran, topped with sweet syrup 14 15.

For a full meal, look for manakla, a small one-clawed crustacean somewhere between a shrimp and a baby lobster, cooked with vegetables in coconut milk 15. Restaurants in Boac's restored ancestral houses serve local versions of Filipino dishes such as lumpiang ubod and kare-kare 15.

What to keep in mind during Holy Week:

  • Good Friday is meatless for many families, so fish and vegetable dishes are easier to find 6

  • Smaller eateries may close during the Triduum and reopen on Easter Sunday or Monday 6

  • Bring cash in small notes; ATMs in Boac often run out by Good Friday 3

  • Buy arrowroot cookies in town rather than generic packs at the port 3

Food and water for three days ran about PHP 1,500 per person in 2026 3.

Tip: Buy your pasalubong on Holy Wednesday, before shops shorten their hours for the Triduum.

Frequently asked questions

The Pugutan, the beheading of Longinus, is usually the climax of Easter Sunday, though in some towns it falls on Easter Monday 1. Each town sets its own day: in 2026 one guide listed Boac's Pugutan on Black Saturday and Mogpog's at noon on Easter Sunday 3. Check the Boac programme on arrival.

The mask is part of a penitent's vow. It hides the wearer's identity so the sacrifice is made for God, not for recognition 18. Masks are carved from soft dapdap or santol wood and take a couple of months to finish, and the name comes from the Spanish morrión, a helmet 17 18.

Yes. Moryonan is the local name for the Holy Week observance, and Moriones Festival is the name popularised by the media in the 1960s 1. It was promoted as a festival in the 1970s to draw tourists, and masks grew more colourful and elaborate after that 17. Many Marinduquenos still prefer Moryonan.

Visitors do not usually march as morions, because the practice is a personal vow organised through local fraternities, mostly of men 17. Masks are sold as souvenirs at the end of the festival, carved by the same workshops that supply penitents 5. Buying one is welcome; wearing it in a procession is not.

Jeepneys and vans wait at the Balanacan Port exit and announce their towns, with fares of at most PHP 100 per person 7. Santa Cruz is 29 km from Boac, and jeepneys run there via Boac 20. Services to the farther towns mostly stop around 6 PM, so arrive before evening 7.

Most visitors use data for maps between towns, checking changing Senakulo and Pugutan venues, messaging and photos, which is light use. Video uploads after the Pugutan are the heaviest moment. Signal is steady in town centres but thins in interior barangays, so download offline maps before leaving Dalahican Port 3.
