Why does a night in the white desert depend on your phone?

Rann Utsav sends you to the Great Rann of Kutch, a flat salt desert with almost nothing to navigate by, and most of your plan lives on your phone. The permit receipt for the White Rann checkpoint has to be downloaded and shown on the day 5. Your Tent City booking confirmation, the Bhuj pickup slot and your ID proof are all digital. The coach to the white desert leaves in fixed slots, and a message from the camp desk is how you learn that your slot has moved 4.

The road from Bhuj to Dhordo is about 85 km and takes roughly an hour and 45 minutes 8. Between Bhuj and the Tent City you pass villages where a cab driver may need your live location, and where nobody will have a printed timetable. Losing signal on the wrong stretch means a missed pickup, a late check-in or a driver who cannot find the gate. This page treats connectivity as a practical part of the trip, because the Rann gives you very little to fall back on.

Where will your permit receipt live at the Dhordo checkpoint?

The permit portal asks for a date, a head count, a vehicle number and one ID upload, then gives you a receipt to download 5. At the White Rann checkpoint you show it on your screen. If the receipt sits in an email you cannot open, you wait in a queue with a vehicle behind you. Save the PDF to your phone before leaving Bhuj, because signal at the checkpoint is not something to count on.

How do you meet your group at Kala Dungar at sunset?

Kala Dungar is about 45 km from the Tent City, and visitors cluster at the summit viewpoint for the evening aarti and jackal feeding 5 6. If your group splits between the temple steps and the viewpoint, a shared map pin saves twenty minutes of shouting. The summit has an army post that limits where you can walk 6.

What do you do when a cab is needed from the Dhordo road?

Once the tent camp quiets down, a ride back to Bhuj after dark is hard to arrange by walking up to a stranger. Cab booking apps and calls to a pre-arranged driver need data. A cab from Bhuj to Dhordo is quoted at about 85 km, so plan the return before you leave the camp 8.

The complete guide

When Is Rann Utsav in 2026?

Rann Utsav 2026-27 is listed on the official booking site as running from 1 November 2026 to 7 March 2027 1. Outlook Traveller and Travel Trade Journal report the same window, so treat it as the working season 2 3. The same booking site elsewhere describes the festival as November to February, and its FAQ gives October to March as the best time to visit, so confirm your exact nights when you book 1. Dates are not confirmed by an editor yet.

Rann Utsav 2026 is a tent-village season at Dhordo in Kutch, Gujarat, running from 1 November 2026 to 7 March 2027, with the strongest visits clustered around the full moon 1 2. The moon is why the dates matter, because the white desert looks silver in the nights around the full moon. The full-moon windows reported for the season are:

  • 23 to 25 November 2026 2

  • 22 to 24 December 2026 2

  • 21 to 23 January 2027 2

  • 19 to 21 February 2027 2

Another report gives slightly different windows, 22 to 25 November 2026, 21 to 24 December 2026, 20 to 23 January 2027 and 18 to 21 February 2027, which is why a night either side of the full moon is the safe choice 4. Dark-moon nights, such as 9 November 2026 and 8 December 2026, suit stargazing instead 2. Diwali week, 8 to 14 November 2026, and the Christmas and New Year period, 18 December 2026 to 2 January 2027, are the busiest booking weeks 4.

One thing changes the plan more than any date. The official site carried a notice that heavy rainfall had delayed formation of the White Rann for this season, so the salt crust may not be fully dry in early November 4. Look at the latest notice a few days before you travel. Some third-party listings show other windows, such as 5 November 2026 to 4 March 2027, and one travel blog gives 1 November 2026 to 28 February 2027, so the official booking page is the one to trust before you pay for non-refundable nights 10 11. Those blogs also differ on the first full-moon window, giving 23 to 25 November 2026, which matches the Outlook Traveller figure 11.

Tip: Book two nights, not one, so one cloudy sunset does not cost you the whole white desert.

Rann Utsav Tent City Price 2026–2027 & White Rann Permit Guide

Rann Utsav has no gate ticket: you pay for a Tent City package and a separate small permit for the White Rann. The official booking page lists "starting from" packages of Rs 6,300 for 1 night and 2 days, Rs 12,600 for 2 nights and 3 days, and Rs 18,900 for 3 nights and 4 days, with 18% tax added at checkout 1. The page does not say whether those rates are per person or per tent, so confirm that before paying 1. A third-party travel blog quotes indicative nightly ranges of Rs 15,000 to 30,000 for Premium tents, Rs 8,000 to 15,000 for Deluxe and Rs 4,500 to 7,500 for Standard in the 2026-27 season, all-inclusive of meals, shows, camel rides and bonfires 10. Treat those as a rough guide to how far a full-moon weekend can sit above the package floor, not as an official tariff.

The tent categories on the booking form are Non-AC Swiss Cottage, AC Swiss Cottage, Premium Tents, Super Premium Tents, Rajwadi Suite and Darbari Suite 1. Packages include breakfast, lunch, evening tea and dinner, plus cultural programmes and selected sightseeing, depending on length 1 4. Optional extras include camel rides, ATV rides, cycling in the White Rann, paramotoring and hot air balloon rides 1.

A flat 25 per cent discount ran in the Rann Sale from 31 July to 2 August 2026, so early booking was cheaper this season 3.

The Rann of Kutch permit is the second payment. Visitors entering the White Rann at Dhordo need a permit, applied for on rannpermit.gujarat.gov.in 4 7. A 2025-26 guide lists Rs 100 per person above 12 years, Rs 50 for ages 6 to 12 and free entry up to 5 years, so check the portal for the current fee 5. The steps are:

  1. Choose a date and the number of travellers.

  2. Enter names and a vehicle number, and upload ID for one person.

  3. Pay online and download the receipt.

  4. Show the receipt at the White Rann checkpoint.

Tip: If you book a tent stay, ask the camp to arrange the permit for you 5.

How do you get from Bhuj airport to Dhordo?

Bhuj is the gateway to Rann Utsav, and Dhordo is about 85 km from it by road 4 5. Bhuj airport is about 4 km from the city centre and handles domestic flights, and Bhuj railway station sits on the Western Railway network, with trains to Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Surat 9. Flight options are limited, so check schedules early.

Rann Utsav 2026-27 Tent City packages often include coach pickups from Bhuj airport and railway station at fixed times, and the booking form lists slots at 08:15 and 13:30 from the railway station, 10:00 from both, and 15:30 from the airport 1. Free transfers may not run outside those slots, so match your flight or train to them 4. An operator quotes the Bhuj to Dhordo drive at about 85 km and roughly 1 hour 45 minutes by cab 8. Another report says Dhordo is about 3 hours from Bhuj for packaged transfers, which is the safer planning number if you ride the shared coach 2 3.

Longer drives are possible from other Gujarat cities. Dhordo is about 410 km from Ahmedabad, 310 km from Rajkot and 510 km from Vadodara 4. Most visitors fly into Bhuj instead.

  • Fly to Bhuj, then take a package coach or a cab

  • Take a train to Bhuj and join the same pickup

  • Self-drive from Ahmedabad if you want time at roadside stops

Note: There is no pickup option on the booking form if you are arriving by your own vehicle, so tell the camp your arrival day in advance 1.

What happens at the White Rann at sunset and sunrise?

The White Rann visit is the centre of Rann Utsav: a short drive from camp to the salt flat, then one to two hours on foot. Visits are allotted in slots of 1 to 2 hours, and Tent City guests usually ride a bus to the white desert 5. A sunset trip leaves camp around 5:00 PM and returns around 8:00 PM, and a sunrise trip leaves around 6:00 AM and returns around 8:00 AM 5.

On the flat itself you can walk, cycle, take a camel ride or pay for paramotoring and balloon rides, depending on the season 1. The camp programme adds folk music and dance, performances by the Siddi community, a Haat of artisans selling Ajrakh textiles, Bandhani sarees, embroidery and Lippan art, and stargazing nights 1 3.

  • Walk away from the camel queue for the best light on the salt

  • Stay for the colour change after the sun drops

  • On a full-moon night, expect the permit slot to be the busiest hour

The White Rann is a fragile landscape. Stay on designated access routes, do not litter, and avoid wildlife and restricted areas 2. Ask before photographing people or their work 2. The crust is hard in places and soft in others, so wear shoes you do not mind getting salty, and wipe your camera lens before you go back on the bus. Do not wander off the marked route after dark, because the flat looks the same in every direction and the guides watch the clock for the return bus.

Tip: Cloud can ruin one sunset, so keep the sunrise slot as your backup rather than your first choice.

Is Kala Dungar worth the drive from the Tent City?

Kala Dungar is the best add-on to a stay at Dhordo, and the detour is a half-day, not a quick stop. The hill is 462 m above sea level, the highest point in Kutch, about 97 km from Bhuj and 25 km from Khavda, the nearest town 6. A travel guide places it about 45 km from the Rann Utsav site 5.

Kala Dungar, the Black Hill, carries a roughly 400-year-old Dattatreya temple at the top 6. Local folklore says Lord Dattatreya met starving jackals and offered his body to feed them, and it regenerated as they ate 6. Priests prepare food daily and feed the jackals each morning and evening after the aarti 6. That is why people arrive before sunset: you watch the ritual, then the Great Rann spreads out below.

On a clear day the view runs toward the Pakistan border, and an army post at the summit restricts access beyond that point 6. Sunset is the best time to stand at the viewpoint.

  • Go for the evening aarti, not for the road

  • Carry water; the summit has little shade

  • Keep your camera away from the army post

The best season for the hill is October to March, matching the Rann Utsav window 6. Plan the Kala Dungar visit on a day you are not also doing the sunrise White Rann slot, because the drive uses most of an afternoon. Gujarat Tourism describes the hill as 90 km north of Bhuj, a little shorter than the 97 km Incredible India figure, so allow for road conditions either way 12. The final stretch climbs through scrub and rock, and the temple courtyard is small, so arrive in daylight and wait for the aarti bell rather than leaving as soon as you have your photo. Drivers know the timing of the feeding, so ask yours when you leave camp.

Tip: Leave Tent City after lunch so you reach the hill before the evening aarti.

Which Bhuj sights fit a Rann Utsav trip?

Bhuj is where most Rann Utsav trips start or end, and it has enough to fill a day. The sights listed in one guide are Aina Mahal, an 18th-century palace of mirrors, Prag Mahal and the Kutch Museum, Vijay Vilas Palace and a Swaminarayan Mandir 5. Roha Fort, the Sun Temple at Kotay and Pingleshwar Mahadev sit farther out 5. A day in Bhuj works best before the drive north, because the palaces and museum keep daytime hours and the road to Dhordo is not a drive you want to start late. If you arrive by train, a rickshaw from the station covers the old town, and the airport is only 4 km from the city 9.

Rann Utsav 2026-27 packages can also include optional tours of Bhuj, Dhordo, Mandvi Beach and Dholavira, depending on the package 1. Mandvi is about 59.6 km from Bhuj, and Narayan Sarovar about 158 km 5. Aina Mahal is a different place from the Dhordo end: a guide puts another Aina Mahal about 1.5 km from the Rann Utsav site, so check which one a driver means 5.

The Evoke-run Dholavira camp is adding 35 seasonal tents next to its existing property, and a 30 km highway across the Great Rann, the Road to Heaven, leads to the UNESCO site of Dholavira, a Harappan city 2 3. Dhordo itself was recognised as a UN World Tourism Organisation Best Tourism Village in 2023 2.

  • Handicraft shopping spots named on the booking site: Bhuj, Ludiya and Hodko 1

  • Ajrakhpur is the village for Ajrakh block printing 2

Tip: If your flight lands in the morning, take the 10:00 pickup and keep Bhuj for the last afternoon of the trip.

Where does the Tent City sit, and what is it like at night?

Rann Utsav Tent City is a tented village at Dhordo, near Dholavira and the Great Rann of Kutch in Gujarat 1. Cottages and tents are grouped around a central dining hall, craft Haat and performance area, and the White Rann itself is a bus ride away, not a walk from the beds 1 5.

Winter nights are cold. Outlook Traveller notes the Rann can be surprisingly cold after sunset, though days are sunny and bright 2. Pack warm layers, comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen and sunglasses 2.

At the 2026-27 Tent City, meals are served as breakfast, lunch, evening tea and dinner, with Kutchi, Gujarati and multi-cuisine options 1. A guest review noted that free mineral water is available around the camp, but you may have to buy it in the dining hall 1.

  • Book a category above Non-AC cottage if you feel the cold

  • Keep a torch for paths between the tents

  • Arrive before dark on your first day to find your cottage

Crowd levels on the camp map change with the moon. On a full-moon night the dining hall, the performance area and the bus bay fill together. A helpline is listed on the booking site, with a toll-free number 1800 233 9008 1. The booking form also asks you to select an ID proof type, driving licence, passport or other, and to accept the terms before you pay, so keep the ID you chose with you at check-in 1. The page does not list a cancellation policy, so read the terms link before paying for a full-moon night 1.

Tip: Ask the front desk for the bus timing for the White Rann as soon as you check in.

How do you stay online in Dhordo and Bhuj?

Signal in Dhordo is the weak link of a Rann Utsav trip, so install your mobile data before you reach Bhuj. For a first-time visitor, an India eSIM installed at home means the permit receipt, the map to the White Rann checkpoint and the camp booking are on your phone when you land at Bhuj airport.

Install the eSIM before you fly, keep your normal line for calls, and switch the data line on when you land. Download offline maps of Bhuj and the road to Dhordo as a backup, because the road passes stretches with little coverage. A coastal or desert route can drop signal for long stretches, and a plan that needs a live connection fails there.

  • Save the permit receipt as a PDF on your phone

  • Share a live location with someone at home on the Bhuj to Dhordo drive

  • Keep a power bank in your day bag for the sunset slot

A cab booking app and a map are most useful on the Bhuj side. At the Tent City, the camp desk, not an app, is the quickest way to change a pickup slot. Treat each charge as a decision: a full battery at sunset matters more than a fresh social post, so switch off background updates on the salt flat. Photos and short videos of the white desert are large files, so upload them once you are back on camp connectivity or in Bhuj rather than at the checkpoint.

Tip: Test your data connection in Bhuj before the 85 km drive 4, not after you arrive at the camp.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, visitors entering the White Rann at Dhordo need an entry permit, applied for online on rannpermit.gujarat.gov.in 4 7. You choose a date, enter names and a vehicle number, upload one ID and pay, then show the downloaded receipt at the checkpoint 5. If you stay at the Tent City, the camp can usually arrange it, so ask when you book.

Outlook Traveller lists the full-moon windows as 23 to 25 November 2026, 22 to 24 December 2026, 21 to 23 January 2027 and 19 to 21 February 2027 2. Another report shifts each window by a day, so aim for the middle of the range and book two nights to be safe 4. These nights are also the busiest at the camp.

Kala Dungar is about 45 km from the Rann Utsav site, a half-day round trip 5. The hill is 462 m high, about 97 km from Bhuj and 25 km from Khavda 6. Go in the afternoon so you are at the Dattatreya temple for the evening aarti and jackal feeding 6.

Yes, the booking form lists pickup slots from Bhuj at 08:15 from the railway station, 10:00 from the station and airport, 13:30 from the station and 15:30 from the airport, or no pickup if you travel by your own vehicle 1. Free transfers may not run outside the fixed slots, so match your flight or train to one of them 4.

The official site carried a notice that heavy rainfall delayed formation of the White Rann for the 2026-27 season 4. Notices can change before and during the festival, so check the latest update a few days before travel. If the salt crust is wet, ask the camp whether visits are running and whether your slot can move.

Install an eSIM before you fly so data is active when you land in Bhuj, and keep your home line for calls. Save the permit receipt and your tent booking offline, and download maps of Bhuj and the road to Dhordo. Signal can drop between Bhuj and the camp, so do not wait to download anything until you are on the road.
