Harbin Ice and Snow Festival 2027 Travel Guide: When to Go and What to Expect

  • Late Dec 2026 – late Feb 2027 (official opening expected Jan 5)
  • China (Harbin, Heilongjiang)
  • Last updated: 2026年10月30日

Overview

The Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival is a two-month winter season in Harbin, north-east China, first held in 1985 13 and built around four places: Ice and Snow World (carved, lit ice architecture), the Sun Island Snow Sculpture Expo (monumental snow sculpture), Zhaolin Park (ice lanterns) and the frozen Songhua River. The 2027 festival is expected to open officially on 5 January 2027, with Ice and Snow World expected to open in late December 2026 and run to late February; the operator had not published dates or prices by late October 2026 26. Plan for temperatures around -20°C and three full days.

Highlights

  • Four venues, each with its own ticket (or none) and its own best time of day
  • Official opening ceremony traditionally on 5 January; expected again on 5 January 2027, with venues expected open from late December
  • Ice and Snow World: a lit ice city, record 1.25 million m² announced for the 28th edition, best from dusk 1
  • Sun Island: snow sculptures the size of houses, seen in daylight, on a 1.5 million m² site in 2026 15
  • Zhaolin Park and the frozen river: the free, walkable, old-Harbin side of the festival 16
  • January averages around -18°C with dry, bright days and sharp wind on the river

Why is the festival spread across a frozen city?

The Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival is not one place. It is a season, from late December to late February, played out across a city that sits at around -20°C for most of it. The main event is Ice and Snow World, a city of carved ice on the north bank of the Songhua River, lit from inside in colour after dark. Nearby, the Sun Island Snow Sculpture Expo shows snow sculptures several storeys high in daylight. Back in the old city, Zhaolin Park hangs its ice lanterns, Central Street lines its Russian façades with carved ice, and the frozen river becomes a playground of sleds, ice bikes and winter swimmers. The festival dates from 1985 and its opening ceremony is traditionally held on 5 January, with fireworks over the ice 13.

Moving between those four places in that cold is where your phone matters. Ticketed venues sell dated e-tickets through official WeChat accounts and international booking platforms. Metro Line 2 links the old city to the ice park, but the exits, the walk to the gate and the ride-hailing pin for the way home are easier with a live map. Payments, translation, weather warnings and the group chat that keeps a family together in a dark park all run on data, and hotel Wi-Fi does not come with you. China’s filters also block Google Maps, WhatsApp and Instagram on local networks, so a China eSIM installed before you fly is a practical item for a smoother trip.

Why do several QR codes sit behind one festival?

Ice and Snow World and the Sun Island Snow Expo are separate e-tickets, each a QR code tied to a date, and the park sells priority passes for the super ice slide and the King’s Chariot show on top 814. Zhaolin Park’s ice lantern fair was free to enter in 2026, but still has opening hours 16. You need data to buy tickets, to pull them up at the gate with gloves on, and to confirm that a ticket bought for one venue is not being scanned at another.

Why is a live map worth carrying between the metro and the gate?

Metro Line 2 runs from Harbin Railway Station and Central Street to Sun Island and Ice and Snow World stations, but the walk to the gate and the way back at closing time happen on icy streets in the dark 10. A live map and the metro app turn that into a short walk instead of a cold wander, and the ride-hailing app is the usual exit when the park closes and the taxi rank is full.

How do you keep a group together at -25°C?

The ice park is vast, dark between the lit structures and packed in front of the main castle during fireworks. A grandparent who stops to warm up in a hall or a child who runs ahead to the slide is lost within a minute. Live location sharing in a group chat is the fix, and it needs every phone to have data and to stay warm enough to work.

Why does translation matter on the coldest nights?

Frostbite warnings on screens, slide-closure notices, menus and ticket machines are largely in Chinese. Camera translation reads them in seconds with a connection. On a night when the park shortens its hours because the temperature has dropped past -30°C, that notice is the one you most need to understand.

Opening dates for the 43rd Harbin Ice and Snow Festival and its venues

The festival’s official opening is traditionally held on 5 January. The 42nd festival opened on 5 January 2026, with the ceremony at Ice and Snow World over 5 and 6 January 13. The 2027 edition would be the 43rd; 5 January 2027 falls on a Tuesday and is expected, but the organiser had not confirmed it by late October 2026 212. The park inside it is on a separate clock: the 27th Ice and Snow World opened on 17 December 2025 and closed on 21 February 2026 46, and the 28th is expected to open around 20 December 2026 and run to late February 6.

The festival does not follow the lunar calendar, which is why the ceremony date barely moves. Everything around it depends on the cold:

  • Ice and Snow World opens when the ice is ready and the builders have finished. For 2027 the operator presented the 28th edition on 12 October 2026 but gave no opening date or prices 2

  • The Sun Island Snow Expo began a trial run in late December in the 2025-26 season, and Zhaolin Park’s ice lantern fair opened on 1 January 2026 1617

  • The closing date is never promised. The ice park closed on 21 February 2026 and Zhaolin Park’s lanterns closed early on 19 February 2026 because of warm weather 616

How the season is announced: a first announcement in October gives the scale of the park; the opening date and ticket release follow later. The 28th Ice and Snow World was presented at a season launch in Guangzhou on 12 October 2026 and promised a record 1.25 million m² site, 400,000 m³ of ice and snow, six sections and a Frozen-themed area made with Disney China 123. Follow the Harbin Ice and Snow World official account and the Harbin tourism bureau for the date.

Dates inside the season that change your experience (holiday dates expected, not yet officially published):

  • 1 to 3 January 2027: New Year holiday, very crowded, premium hotel rates

  • 5 January: opening ceremony and fireworks, a lively night and a crowded one

  • 6 to 20 January: the quiet, cold, reliable heart of the season

  • Around 5 to 11 February 2027: Chinese New Year week (New Year’s Day is 6 February), the busiest week for every train, hotel and venue in Harbin

  • After mid-February: thinner crowds and an uncertain closing date

Tip: Book for the second or third week of January if you want every venue open, the ice at its clearest and ordinary crowds. December and late February are gambles, one on the opening date and one on the thaw.

What did Harbin Ice and Snow Festival tickets cost across four venues in 2026?

Each venue sells its own entry, which surprises visitors who expect one festival ticket. The Harbin Ice and Snow Festival is an umbrella; the places inside it charge separately, and in 2026 one of them charged nothing. As of late October 2026 the 2027 prices had not been published, so the 2026 season is the budget guide 2:

  • Harbin Ice and Snow World: 328 RMB standard adult for most of the run, with a 298 RMB promotion from 17 to 23 December 2025 7
  • Ice and Snow World concessions: 240 RMB for visitors aged 18 and under and full-time students aged 24 and under with ID; children under 1.2 metres were free 89
  • Ice and Snow World priority pass: 988 RMB, bundling priority access to rides such as the super ice slide; combined tickets with the King’s Chariot show were listed at 428 or 498 RMB depending on seat 8
  • Sun Island International Snow Sculpture Art Expo: 198 RMB, free for children under 1.2 metres 14
  • Zhaolin Park Ice Lantern Fair: free since December 2018, and free again for the 52nd fair in 2026 1617

The two main ticketed venues therefore cost about 526 RMB per adult at 2026 prices (328 plus 198), before hotels, food and transport 714. Tickets are dated, so buy each for its own day rather than assuming a combined ticket works in either order.

Inside Ice and Snow World, the standard ticket covers the park and its programme. Extras include the priority passes, a few rides and the indoor attractions. For the super ice slide, tour sites list entry limits (not under 15 years or 1.6 metres, and not aged 61 and over), so check the 2027 rules before queuing with children or older relatives 9.

How to buy: the venues sell dated e-tickets through official WeChat accounts and mini-programs and through international platforms such as Trip.com. Reports say Ice and Snow World has adopted international ticketing that accepts passports and overseas payment methods, with multilingual guides on site 5. The opening fortnight and the Chinese New Year week sell out in advance; mid-January is usually available a few days ahead.

Note: Choose an afternoon entry slot around 15:00. One ticket then gives you the ice in daylight, at dusk and fully lit, which is the whole experience in one visit; a 19:00 slot gives you only the dark.

The free side of the festival: Zhaolin Park’s ice lanterns, Central Street’s lit façades and street-side ice sculptures, the Flood Control Monument square, the frozen river with its sleds and swimmers (pay the operators directly) and St Sophia Cathedral’s square. A Harbin evening is possible without a ticket, but not the main event.

How do you move between the north-bank venues and the old city?

The festival sits on both banks of the Songhua River in Harbin, the capital of Heilongjiang province in China’s far north-east. The two big ticketed venues are on the north bank in Songbei District, near Sun Island: Ice and Snow World on the west side of the island, and the Sun Island Snow Expo a short ride away. Zhaolin Park, Central Street and the riverfront are on the south bank in the old city, within walking distance of each other 14.

Getting to Harbin:

  • By air: Harbin Taiping International Airport (HRB) has direct flights from Beijing (about 2 hours), most Chinese cities and some international routes. A taxi or airport shuttle bus covers the run into the centre; allow extra time in snow. We could not confirm a direct rail or metro link to the airport, so plan on road transport
  • By rail: high-speed trains from Beijing take about 4.5 to 6 hours, mostly to Harbin West 20. Harbin Railway Station, on Metro Line 2, has the best access to the centre. Book both directions on the official 12306 platform, because return trains fill fast in late January and around Chinese New Year

Getting between the venues:

  • Metro Line 2 runs from Harbin Railway Station through Central Street and People’s Square to Sun Island and then Ice and Snow World, heading toward Jiangbei University Town; the Sun Island station is the stop for the snow expo 1014. From Harbin West, take Line 3 to People’s Square and change to Line 2
  • Taxi or ride-hailing from Central Street to the ice park takes roughly 20 to 30 minutes outside peak times; after closing, waits are long
  • A cable car crosses the Songhua River from the Stalin Park area to the Sun Island scenic area, a scenic way to reach the snow expo; confirm winter hours on the day 14
  • Hotels and tour operators run afternoon shuttles to the park with returns after the fireworks

Getting back late: the ice park closes at about 21:30 or 22:00 depending on the source, and last-train times on Line 2 vary by station, direction and holiday, so check the return time before you enter 1013. Walk to the metro rather than the taxi rank; a long queue at the gate in -25°C is a safety issue, not an inconvenience. With older relatives or small children, pre-book a return transfer.

Tip: Load the Harbin transit code into Alipay or WeChat Pay, or buy a metro card on day one. Ticket machines, gloves and a frozen touchscreen are a bad combination at night.

Within the old city, everything is walkable in daylight: Central Street to St Sophia is ten minutes, to Zhaolin Park ten more, with the heated underground mall near Central Street as an escape route.

What does a festival day look like from Sun Island to the lit ice?

A festival day has a daylight half and a dark half, and the venues are built for one or the other. Snow is seen by day, ice by night, the river in between. Show times for 2027 will be posted by each venue closer to the season.

Morning, roughly 9:00 to 13:00: Sun Island Snow Sculpture Expo. In 2025-26 the 38th expo covered 1.5 million m² with 260 snow sculptures made from 120,000 m³ of snow 15. The carvings are unlit and best in low morning sun, when shadows pick out the detail. The professional carving competitions are held earlier, in December; in 2025 the 25th International Snow Sculpture Competition ran on 10 to 13 December and the National Professional Snow Sculpture Competition around 26 to 29 December 13. Two to three hours is enough at the expo; the cold accumulates faster when you stand still looking at art.

Midday: back across the river, or lunch on the island. The frozen Songhua by the Flood Control Monument is a good hour: sleds, ice bikes, dog-drawn carts, kite flyers and the winter swimmers who break the ice at the same spot every day.

Around 15:00: enter Ice and Snow World. In daylight the ice is clear and faintly green, and you can see river blocks stacked into walls, bridges and towers. This is the hour for the super ice slide, which had 24 lanes up to 521 metres long in the 2026 season, before the queues build 4.

Around 16:00: dusk, and the park changes completely. Lights inside the blocks come on and the towers turn blue, red and gold. The twenty minutes around sunset are the best photographs of the trip; stand on the main plaza in front of the central castle or climb a tower stair for the overview.

Evening: the park’s programme in rotation:

  • Projection-mapped animations on large ice surfaces

  • Live shows and the King’s Chariot show; themes change each season, so the 2027 programme will be announced later 8

  • Fireworks on peak nights and on the opening night, expected 5 January 2027

  • The 120-metre Snowflake Ferris Wheel for the overhead view from a heated cabin 5

  • Heated halls, including a 5,000 m² air-supported “Warm Castle” in 2026, for warming breaks 5

The ice-sculpture side of the festival peaks in early January. In 2026 the 36th Harbin International Ice Sculpture Competition ran at Ice and Snow World on 2 to 5 January, and the 45th National Professional Ice Sculpture Competition at Zhaolin Park on 6 to 8 January 13.

Leave around 20:30 to 21:00, or retreat to the heated halls. Four hours is the sensible maximum outdoors.

Tip: On the first night in Harbin, do Zhaolin Park’s ice lanterns, a one- to two-hour stroll in the city centre. It teaches you how the cold feels and how your camera behaves before the main event.

Mid-January: Optimal timing and temperatures

Arrive between 6 and 20 January 2027 and give Harbin three nights. That window sits after the opening-week finishing work and the official ceremony, in the deepest and most reliable cold, and well clear of the Chinese New Year rush that starts in early February.

Crowd levels on a scale of 1 to 5 (editorial estimates from typical seasons; holiday dates not yet official):

  • 20 to 31 December 2026: level 3. Opening-week prices, some sculptures still being finished
  • 1 to 3 January: level 5. New Year holiday
  • 4 and 5 January: level 4 to 5. Opening ceremony and fireworks
  • 6 to 20 January: level 3. The sweet spot
  • 21 January to 4 February: level 3 rising to 4 as the holiday approaches
  • Around 5 to 11 February: level 5. Chinese New Year week; trains, hotels and tickets sell out weeks ahead
  • 12 to 28 February: level 2 to 3, with a closing date nobody will confirm

Weather: January in Harbin averages around -18°C, with daytime highs near -13°C and nights of -25°C or colder; cold snaps pass -30°C. It is dry and bright with little snowfall in January, so the snow you see was made and shaped by machines and the ice was cut from the river. Wind is the multiplier: on the river and at the ice park it makes -20°C feel colder, while old city streets are more sheltered. Sunrise is around 7:00 and sunset around 16:00, so the lit venues are at full effect by late afternoon.

What to expect of your own body: fingers and cheeks go numb within minutes of standing still at night, camera batteries die, phones shut down with charge left, and breath freezes on scarves and eyelashes. None of this is dangerous if you plan around it:

  • Two to four hours outdoors per session, with heated stops every 45 minutes
  • Snow venues by day, ice venues from mid-afternoon, nothing outdoors late at night
  • Hand and foot warmers from the first morning, not after the first scare
  • A hotel with a humidifier or a wet towel on the radiator; the indoor air is very dry

Note: Harbin Taiping Airport can close for hours in a snowstorm. Leave a buffer night at the end of the trip rather than booking the first flight out the morning after your last venue.

If Harbin is part of a longer China trip, do it first; Beijing at 0°C feels mild afterwards.

Which Harbin district puts the festival’s free half on your doorstep?

Stay in the old city around Central Street, in Daoli District, and base yourself where the free half of the festival is on your doorstep: the lit street, the frozen river, St Sophia Cathedral and Zhaolin Park, plus Metro Line 2 across to the ice park. It is warmer in atmosphere than the north bank and the right place to be between venues.

Options by area:

  • Central Street and the riverfront: the widest choice from budget to high-end, English menus nearby, one metro ride or a short taxi to the ice park. The default choice
  • Around Harbin Railway Station and Nangang District: big business hotels, easy for train arrivals, with direct Line 2 service to Central Street and the ice park 10
  • Songbei District beside Ice and Snow World: a handful of resort-style hotels with views over the lit park, convenient for the evening and isolated for everything else; pricier
  • Near Harbin West Station: only for a late arrival or an early departure by high-speed rail

Booking windows: mid-January rooms begin selling in autumn, and the opening week and the Chinese New Year week fill early. Book by early November 2026 for choice; from mid-December you take what is left at premium rates. Indicative mid-January rates from past seasons: about 200 to 400 RMB for a budget hotel near Central Street, 500 to 900 RMB for a mid-range hotel, and 1,200 to over 2,500 RMB for an international chain or a Songbei resort hotel, with surcharges around 1 to 5 January and Chinese New Year (editorial estimates, not live prices).

Things to check before you book:

  • The hotel accepts foreign guests; some Harbin budget hotels are domestic-only
  • A luggage room and an early breakfast for a Sun Island morning
  • A humidifier in the room or one available on request
  • Cancellation terms that cover a weather-delayed flight

Tip: Ask for a river-facing high floor on Central Street; on a clear night you may see the glow of Ice and Snow World across the water.

Snow Town and Yabuli, the common add-ons, need their own overnight bookings and sell out on the same timetable.

Which phone tasks matter across four venues in the cold?

Wi-Fi is not a strategy in Harbin. Public networks at the venues are limited for a crowd, some cafés on Central Street ask for a Chinese mobile number to log in, and networks inside China filter Google Maps, Gmail, WhatsApp, Instagram and many Western sites. A VPN over hotel Wi-Fi is slow and often fails, and it is no use on an icy street late at night.

What mobile data does for you across the four venues:

  • Buying and showing timed e-tickets at Ice and Snow World and Sun Island, and any priority passes inside the park

  • Metro Line 2 directions, the transit code in Alipay or WeChat Pay, and ride-hailing after closing

  • Camera translation of slide notices, frostbite warnings, menus and ticket machines

  • A group chat with live location for regrouping in the dark park

  • Alipay and WeChat Pay for stalls, sleds, taxis and hot drinks

  • The venues’ official accounts for weather closures, show times and the closing-date announcement

  • Video calls home from inside a heated hall

To keep your usual apps working, arrange your mobile data before arriving in China, for example with a China travel eSIM installed at home. Confirm your phone is unlocked and supports eSIM before you fly.

How much data: We estimate 1 to 2 GB a day usually covers tickets, maps, translation, payments and messaging. Video is the variable; an evening of filming lit ice and sending clips home can double it. For a four-day Harbin trip, 10 GB is comfortable, and 20 GB suits heavy social media use or a longer China itinerary.

Tip: Cold is the enemy of connectivity here. A phone at -25°C can shut down with battery left. Keep it inside your coat, carry a power bank in an inside pocket, and screenshot your tickets and your hotel’s address in Chinese before you go out.

Keep your home SIM active for SMS so bank verification codes arrive, set the eSIM as your data line, and turn off data roaming on the home SIM.

What is each of the four venues like?

Four venues, four moods, and most first-time visitors only know about one. Here is what each is like, so you can decide where to spend your limited hours of warmth.

Harbin Ice and Snow World: a theme park built from river ice, rebuilt every winter, first opened in 1999. The 2026 season covered 1.2 million m² with 400,000 m³ of ice and snow, and featured an ice Yellow Crane Tower replica, a 24-lane super ice slide, a 120-metre Ferris wheel and a heated Warm Castle 45. The 2027 edition is announced at 1.25 million m² with a Frozen-themed area 13. It is enormous, dark between the lit structures and very cold after sunset. Allow three to four hours from an afternoon entry.

Sun Island International Snow Sculpture Art Expo: the quieter, more artistic counterpart, held annually since 1988 14. Packed snow carved into scenes and sculptures several storeys high across 1.5 million m² in 2025-26 15, plus snow slides and tubing for children and heated halls. Unlit, so a daylight venue only. If your trip is short, this is the venue to drop, not because it is weak but because it competes for daylight with everything else and has no evening.

Zhaolin Park Ice Lantern Fair: the oldest part of the festival, begun in 1963 in the city centre, a one- to two-hour walk-through of smaller ice sculptures and lanterns lit after dark 16. Free, close to Central Street, and the right first evening.

The frozen Songhua River and Central Street: not ticketed, and for many visitors the most memorable. Sleds, ice bikes and dog carts on the river by the Flood Control Monument, winter swimmers at their daily hole in the ice, the lit Russian façades and street-side ice sculptures on Central Street, and St Sophia Cathedral floodlit on its square.

What people get wrong:

  • Assuming one ticket covers every venue, when each ticketed venue has its own

  • Visiting Sun Island after dark, when the sculptures are unlit

  • Entering Ice and Snow World at opening time and leaving before dusk, missing the lights

  • Doing both ticketed venues on the same day with children or grandparents

Tip: The ideal order over three days is Zhaolin Park on the first evening, Sun Island the next morning and Ice and Snow World from 15:00 the same day, then the river and Central Street on day three.

What should you eat, carry and wear on a festival trip?

Harbin’s food is built for the climate: heavy, hot, Russian-influenced and best shared. Eat a proper lunch before the ice park and treat the park’s stalls as hot drinks and snacks.

Dishes to look for:

  • Guobaorou, crispy sweet-and-sour pork, the city’s signature

  • Harbin red sausage (hongchang) and dalieba, the big round Russian bread, from the old Central Street bakeries

  • Dongbei stews: pork with sauerkraut, chicken with mushrooms, lamb hotpot

  • Frozen pears, frozen persimmons and frozen tanghulu from street carts, eaten half-thawed

  • The Central Street ice cream, eaten outdoors in the cold, a local rite

  • Russian borscht, stroganoff and blini in the restaurants of the old quarter

Central Street and the lanes off it have the widest choice and picture menus; Daoli’s backstreets have the Dongbei family restaurants; Sun Island has a few heated restaurants near the expo. Most places take Alipay and WeChat Pay; carry some cash for street carts and the sled operators on the river. Do not drink alcohol before or inside the ice park; it feels warming but accelerates cold injury.

Money: Alipay and WeChat Pay can be linked to many foreign Visa, Mastercard and other international cards; set one up and test it before you leave. Budget the two main venue tickets at about 526 RMB per adult at 2026 prices, then add hotels with surcharges for 1 to 5 January and Chinese New Year 714. Tipping is not customary.

Packing, the short version for -25°C with wind:

  • Long down parka, fleece and thermal base layer; insulated waterproof boots with grip; thermal leggings under lined trousers

  • Hat covering the ears, balaclava or face mask, scarf; ski gloves over touchscreen liners; wool socks and foot warmers

  • Hand warmers for every pocket; two power banks kept inside the coat; a phone lanyard

  • Sunglasses or goggles for Sun Island glare; moisturiser, lip balm and nasal spray for the dry heating

  • Passport carried daily, eSIM installed, tickets screenshotted, hotel address in Chinese on paper

Note: Fur and down clothing can be bought around Central Street; if your coat is not up to it, buy one on day one rather than suffer on day two.

How do family, safety and side trips fit around the festival?

Etiquette at the festival is mostly about ice and queues. Do not climb on or carve into the sculptures; the ice is thinner than it looks. Queue properly for the slides and the Ferris wheel. Never touch metal railings with bare or wet skin. Ask before photographing the winter swimmers and the sled drivers, and stay on the marked areas of the river.

Safety and health: frostbite and falls are the two real risks. Check each other’s faces for white patches every half hour, go indoors at the first numbness, walk with short steps and use handrails. Emergency numbers are 110 for police, 120 for ambulance and 119 for fire. Anyone with heart, circulation or breathing problems should talk to a doctor before the trip; -25°C with wind is a real physiological stress, and children and older relatives feel it first.

Going with children: workable if sessions stay short. Snowsuits, mittens on strings, balaclavas and foot warmers; Sun Island for one to two hours in the morning; Ice and Snow World from 15:00 to about 19:30 with a heated break every 45 minutes; the river’s sleds and dog carts as the second afternoon. Polarland and the indoor attractions are warm fallbacks on a -30°C day.

Going with older relatives: the ice park means long walks on ice in the dark and stairs on the towers. Arrange a car to the gate, enter mid-afternoon for the lights at dusk, use the Ferris wheel for the overview from a heated cabin, and leave early. Skip Sun Island if stamina is short and spend the morning on Central Street and at St Sophia instead.

Side trips worth adding:

  • Yabuli ski resort, about 177 km southeast of Harbin, for skiing and snow play; trains range from roughly 1.5 to 3 hours depending on the service 19

  • China Snow Town (Xuexiang), roughly 280 to 350 km from Harbin by road; the winter direct bus takes about 5 hours 40 minutes each way, so it needs an overnight stay 18

  • Volga Manor, a Russian-style estate outside the city with its own winter programme, a half-day trip by road

  • Siberian Tiger Park on the north bank, a morning with children

  • Onwards to Beijing by high-speed train or a short flight; the 240-hour visa-free transit rule covers 57 nationalities, but only for travellers with onward travel to a third country 11

Tip: One ticketed venue per day with family, never two. The cold accumulates, and the second venue is always the one nobody enjoys.

Frequently asked questions

The festival is the whole winter season in Harbin, traditionally opened officially on 5 January, and first held in 1985 13. Ice and Snow World is its main venue, a ticketed theme park of carved, lit ice on the north bank of the Songhua River. The festival also includes the Sun Island Snow Sculpture Expo, the Zhaolin Park ice lanterns, Central Street’s ice sculptures and events on the frozen river. When people say “Harbin Ice Festival”, they usually mean Ice and Snow World.

Roughly two months. The official opening is expected on 5 January 2027 and the season runs to late February, but the main venues open earlier, usually in late December; Ice and Snow World opened on 17 December in the 2026 season 4. The closing date depends on the thaw and is never guaranteed; the ice park closed on 21 February 2026 6. Mid-January is the safest time to be sure everything is open.

January averages around -18°C, with daytime highs near -13°C and nights of -25°C or colder; cold snaps pass -30°C. It is dry with little snowfall, and wind on the river and at the ice park makes it feel colder. Dress in a long down parka, thermal layers, insulated boots, a balaclava and ski gloves, keep outdoor sessions to two to four hours with heated breaks, and watch for frostbite on cheeks and fingers.

Yes, with short sessions. Children enjoy the super ice slide, ice bikes and tubing at Ice and Snow World, the snow slides at Sun Island and the sleds and dog carts on the frozen river. The super ice slide has age and height limits, listed on tour sites as under 15 years or 1.6 metres 9. Dress children in snowsuits, balaclavas and foot warmers, do one ticketed venue per day, and use heated halls every 45 minutes.

In the 2026 season Zhaolin Park’s ice lantern fair was free to enter, while Ice and Snow World cost 328 RMB and the Sun Island Snow Expo 198 RMB 71416. Central Street’s ice sculptures, St Sophia Cathedral’s square and the frozen river are also free to visit, although sled and ice-bike operators charge. Check the 2027 prices when the organisers publish them.

It depends on your passport. China’s unilateral 30-day visa-free entry for many nationalities was extended through 31 December 2026, so confirm whether it still applies to January and February 2027 dates 12. A separate 240-hour transit rule covers 57 nationalities with onward travel to a third country 11. Check with the Chinese embassy or consulate at least two months ahead, and carry your passport daily in Harbin.
