Why Is the Old Town Pitch-Dark When the Cliques Start the Morgestraich?

Because the whole point of the Morgestraich is darkness. At 04:00 on Monday the bell of the Martinskirche strikes, the public lighting in the inner city is switched off, and the cliques march out on the command “Morgestraich: vorwärts, marsch!” 6. From that moment the only light comes from lanterns, and the fife and drum groups wander the lanes with no fixed route 14. The Comité asks residents and visitors not to open curtains and not to light fireworks 2.

For the next 72 hours nothing stands still. The Cortège runs on an inner and an outer route across both banks of the Rhine 5, the Gugge bands converge on three squares on Tuesday night 6, and in 2026 the BVB closed the inner city to trams and buses for long stretches of each day 11. Around 200,000 visitors come to watch 8. Sujets, Schnitzelbängg, Cortège routes, departure times and an interactive map are all in the Basel City Guide app 2. Without data, it is guesswork which bridge is closed and which clique just turned into the Gerbergasse.

Why Does the Comité Ask Morgestraich Groups Not to Form Human Chains?

The Fasnachts-Comité warns that the old town is packed at 04:00 and asks groups to stay together without forming chains, and to agree fixed meeting points at set times instead 2. In darkness, a location pinned on every phone before the lights go out is the quickest way to regroup. The Comité also asks for photos and films without flash, because flash dazzles the masked marchers 2. A screen turned right down follows the same spirit.

Which Clique Sujets Can Be Looked Up in the Basel City Guide App?

Each clique plays out a sujet, the satirical theme painted on its lantern, and the Basel City Guide app lists the sujets alongside Cortège routes and departure times 2. The Comité says the app gets fresh Fasnacht content from January 2027 2. For 2026 it also published Rädäbäng, a downloadable directory of carnival units and their sujets 2. With live data, tracking down one lantern or a friend's clique becomes a short walk instead of a long hunt through the Freie Strasse.

How Do BVB Closures Around the Cortège Change the Trip Home?

During Fasnacht 2026, several tram and bus lines ran until about 02:30, and the inner city was closed to public transport for long stretches of each day 11. In 2026, buses 30, 34 and 36 also ran more often from 12:30 until about 20:00 11. The extended timetable is set again for each carnival, so live departures checked before leaving a Gässle crowd near the Spalenberg save a long, cold walk.

When Does the Martinskirche Bell Start the Morgestraich?

Basel Fasnacht 2027 starts with the Morgestraich at 04:00 on Monday 15 February 2027, the date the Fasnachts-Comité counts down to on its home page 1 6. Basel Tourism describes the carnival as lasting exactly 72 hours, from the Morgestraich on Monday at 04:00 to the Ändstraich on Thursday at 04:00 6 7. For 2027 that puts the closing march at 04:00 on Thursday 18 February 2027 1 6. When the bell strikes, the inner-city lights go out and every clique opens with the Morgestraich march, a traditional tune played only on this occasion 7.

The date moves every year because it is tied to Easter. Basel Fasnacht always begins on the Monday after Ash Wednesday 7 8. That is one week later than carnival elsewhere in Switzerland or Germany, and the reason remains unclear 9. A common explanation links the later date to the Reformation, although no documents from that era support it 9. Locals call the 72 hours “die drey scheenschte Dääg”, the three most beautiful days 9.

Basel Fasnacht 2026 ran from 04:00 on Monday 23 February to 04:00 on Thursday 26 February 2026 6. The Comité's calendar already shows the next Morgestraich Mondays:

  • 2028: Monday 6 March 2028 1
  • 2029: Monday 19 February 2029 1
  • 2030: Monday 11 March 2030 1

The carnival season starts before the Morgestraich. The Drummeli, the Comité's indoor drum and piccolo show, runs from 30 January to 6 February 2027 in the Event Halle of Messe Basel 19. Its presale began on 5 November 2026 20. After Fasnacht, the cliques return without costumes for three Bummel Sundays; in 2026 these fell on 1, 8 and 15 March, from 16:00 to 23:00 6.

Tip: The Morgestraich never moves by an hour. Even after a late Sunday arrival, being in the old town about half an hour before the bell is worth the lost sleep.

The tradition is older than the lanterns. The first officially permitted Morgestraich took place in 1835, when participants still carried burning torches 7. Pole-mounted lanterns appeared in 1845 after open-flame torches were banned, and the first large procession lantern is recorded in 1860 7. Basel Fasnacht was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 because of the pandemic and returned in limited form in 2022 9. UNESCO added it to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2017 8.

What Does the Copper Blaggedde Badge Cost?

Basel Fasnacht has no tickets and no gates: Basel Tourism describes the carnival as open to the public, and visitors are invited to watch and respect the traditions 6. What visitors do buy is the Blaggedde, the official carnival badge, which the Fasnachts-Comité calls the entrance ticket to Basel Fasnacht 2. The money covers part of the costs of the creative groups and keeps them independent of political and economic influence 3.

The Comité lists four versions of the 2027 Blaggedde 3:

  • Copper: CHF 10 3
  • Silver: CHF 20 3
  • Gold: CHF 50 3
  • Bijou, as a pin or a pendant: CHF 100 3

The 2026 badge sold at the same four prices, under the motto “Blyyb verspiilt” 6. The new design stays secret until its unveiling between Christmas and New Year 3. The René F. Müller AG, known locally as Blaggedde-Müller, has made the badge since 1939 3. Basel Tourism dates the badge itself to 1911, when the Comité was allowed to sell it to fund part of the carnival 7.

The badge is sold by the carnival groups, at kiosks and other outlets, by street sellers and online through the Comité 3. In 2026 the Tourist Information in the Stadtcasino and the Comité office were among the official outlets 6. Wear it where people can see it 2. Spectators without a badge are the likeliest targets of a confetti attack from a Waggis 9. The badge also counts as entry to the lantern exhibition on the Münsterplatz 6.

A few things do need booking. The Drummeli at Messe Basel is a ticketed indoor show 19. On the Claragraben, the Comité provides grandstand seats for people with limited mobility, with around 100 places per Cortège afternoon; the free admission cards come from the Comité office and are limited 4. On the Claraplatz, the IVB disability organisation provides around 50 wheelchair spaces and 200 chairs without registration or reservation 4.

Tip: Carry a few Swiss franc coins for street sellers and kiosks, since a queue that waits for change can miss a passing clique.

Why Does Bus 50 From EuroAirport Start Too Late for the Morgestraich?

Most visitors fly into EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg, an airport run jointly by France and Switzerland but located entirely on French soil 13. BVB bus 50 leaves from the terminal forecourt in the Swiss sector of the arrivals zone every 7 to 10 minutes from 04:30 to midnight and reaches Basel SBB station in about 20 minutes 12. A taxi from central Basel to the airport costs about CHF 50 12.

That timetable matters on carnival Monday. The first bus 50 leaves at 04:30 12, half an hour after the lights go out for the Morgestraich at 04:00 6. A Sunday arrival and a few hours of sleep in town is the only way to see the start. Every overnight guest in the canton of Basel-Stadt receives a BaselCard, and the hotel or Airbnb booking confirmation serves as a free ticket for the transfer from the airport or station to the accommodation 17.

The 2027 Cortège route plan covers the old town on both sides of the Rhine: Grossbasel around the Marktplatz, Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz, and Kleinbasel around the Claraplatz and Greifengasse, linked by the Mittlere Brücke and the Wettsteinbrücke 5. In 2026 the BVB closed the inner city to public transport at these times 11:

  • Monday: from about 03:30 to 09:00, then from about 12:45 until the end of service 11
  • Tuesday and Wednesday: from the start of service until about 06:00, then from about 12:45 until the end of service 11
  • Thursday: from the start of service until about 06:00 11
  • Wettsteinbrücke: closed on Monday and Wednesday afternoons from about 12:45 until 20:30 11

In 2026 the BVB and the other operators in the TNW network ran early services to the Morgestraich, SBB added extra trains, and several tram and bus lines ran until about 02:30 6 11. Bus 42 ran an extra service from Basel SBB to the Wettsteinplatz in 2026 11. Bikes and e-bikes belong outside the Cortège route and the inner city 2 4.

Tip: From Basel SBB, walking down the Elisabethenstrasse towards the Barfüsserplatz avoids waiting for a diverted tram once the closures start.

What Happens Between the Morgestraich and the Ändstraich?

Basel Fasnacht follows the same rhythm every year: a dark start on Monday, parades on Monday and Wednesday afternoons, a day for children and brass bands on Tuesday, and a 04:00 finish on Thursday 6 8. The 2026 programme gives the clearest guide to timing 6:

  • Monday 04:00, Morgestraich: the old town goes dark and cliques march with lit lanterns, drums and piccolos 6
  • Monday and Wednesday 13:30 to 18:00, Cortège: cliques, Guggen, floats, carriages and single masks 6
  • Tuesday about 13:30 to 18:00, Kinderfasnacht: children and adults roam the centre in small groups 6
  • Tuesday 19:30 to 23:00: Gugge concerts on the Marktplatz, Barfüsserplatz and Claraplatz 6
  • Monday evening to Wednesday morning: Laternenausstellung of over 200 lanterns on the Münsterplatz 6
  • Thursday 04:00: Ändstraich, the official end 6

Around 11,000 costumed carnival-goers present their sujets in the two Cortège parades 4 8. The 2027 route plan shows an inner and an outer loop through streets such as the Freie Strasse, Gerbergasse, Steinenberg, Aeschenvorstadt, Rittergasse, Greifengasse and Claragraben, with Comité information islands at the Marktplatz, Barfüsserplatz and Claraplatz 5. SRF 1 showed the 2026 Monday Cortège live from 14:00 10.

On Tuesday evening, part of Basel's roughly 60 Gugge bands gather at the Messeplatz around 18:30 and parade along the Clarastrasse to the three concert squares 7. Between the parades comes the Gässle, when fife and drum groups wander the old town with no fixed route, especially after dark 6 14. In 2026 the floats and props of around 50 groups stood on the Kasernenareal in Kleinbasel during the three days 6.

The lanterns carry the year's satire. At the 2026 Morgestraich, SRF reported sujets on the abandoned Herzstück rail tunnel, a wounded peace dove, Donald Trump playing with the world and the district heating works that tore up Basel's streets in 2025 10. After the Monday Cortège the cliques set their lanterns up on the Münsterplatz, where they are lit again after dark 7.

From 04:00 on Monday many old-town restaurants and bars open their doors and serve flour soup, onion tart and Käsewähe 9. The Mehlsuppe is made from beef broth, flour, onions and salt 15. Later in the day, kiosks sell sausages with bread and mustard and hot mulled wine 15.

Just before 04:00 on Thursday, the cliques and Gugge bands walk to one of their regular meeting places and play a final march 7.

Tip: The lanterns are worth seeing twice: in motion during the Morgestraich, then standing still on the Münsterplatz after dark, when the satire painted on each side can be read slowly.

What Should Spectators Wear When Costumes and Larven Belong to the Cliques?

Costumes are reserved for the active participants, with an exception for children 6. The Comité asks spectators to avoid painted faces, clown noses and fool's caps, and calls swaying, bawling and heavy drinking frowned upon at Basel Fasnacht 2. The right outfit is ordinary winter clothing and a visible Blaggedde 2.

Winter clothing matters, because the Morgestraich starts in the coldest hours. At the Basel-Binningen weather station, February averages 8.0°C highs and 1.0°C lows, with 45.2 mm of precipitation over 8.4 days and 2.1 days with at least 1 cm of snowfall 13. The 2026 Morgestraich was mild, at 9°C 10. In 2006, about 50 cm of snow fell in the night before the Morgestraich and blocked the inner city 9.

What to pack for Basel Fasnacht:

  • Warm layers, a hat and gloves for a long wait in the dark before sunrise
  • Shoes with grip for lanes covered in confetti
  • Ear protection, which the Comité hands out free at its islands on the Marktplatz, Barfüsserplatz and Claraplatz, and on Tuesday also on the Münsterplatz 2
  • A camera that works without flash 2
  • A hood rather than an umbrella, which visitors are asked not to bring to the parades 14
  • A small bag for the oranges and sweets handed out from the floats

Give way to anyone in costume and never block a marching formation 2. Instruments and props are valuable property, not souvenirs 2. Oranges and other items handed out at the Cortège should not be thrown back at the floats or into the crowd 2. If a Waggis stuffs confetti down a collar, the Basel response is to smile, since throwing confetti at the active participants is not done 2 14.

Note: Never pick confetti, called Räppli, off the ground to throw again. Räppli is sold in single colours only, so mixed confetti gives away a thrower at once 2 9 14.

The Comité says the old town is packed at 04:00 2. Basel Tourism names the Barfüsserplatz, the Marktplatz, the Rümelinsplatz, the Falknerstrasse and the Freie Strasse as the busiest places for the Morgestraich 7. Tuesday afternoon belongs to the Kinderfasnacht, when children roam the centre in small groups 6 8. That makes it the gentlest slot for families.

Which Basel Quarter Suits a Morgestraich Stay?

In 2026 the trams stopped entering the centre from about 03:30 on Monday and for most of each afternoon 11. A room within walking distance of the old town is therefore the practical choice. Every visitor staying overnight in the canton of Basel-Stadt receives a BaselCard, which covers public transport in Basel for the whole stay, up to 30 days 17. Visitors who sleep outside the canton pay no city tax there and get no BaselCard 17.

  • Grossbasel old town, around the Marktplatz and Spalenberg: the Morgestraich passes outside, and fife and drum groups wander the lanes through the night 6 14
  • Kleinbasel, around the Claraplatz: close to a Gugge concert square and the Kaserne float exhibition 5 6
  • Around Basel SBB: an easy walk to the Barfüsserplatz and the stop for bus 50 to the airport 12
  • Near the Wettsteinplatz: served by the extra bus 42 from Basel SBB during Fasnacht 2026 11
  • Liestal: 17 km south of Basel with five trains per hour to Basel 18
  • Weil am Rhein or Lörrach in Germany: bus 220 runs from EuroAirport every 30 minutes 12

Rooms in the old town go first, since the Morgestraich is the reason most visitors come. Booking as soon as the dates are firm is the safe course, and so is checking whether the hotel sits inside the area the trams avoid. Clique cellars are no reliable warm-up spot either: before Fasnacht 2026, stricter fire-safety checks and limits on the number of people in clique cellars worried several cliques 10.

Departure works best around the Ändstraich. The carnival ends at 04:00 on Thursday 18 February 2027 1 6, and bus 50 to EuroAirport runs from 04:30 12. A Thursday morning flight is possible after a night without sleep.

Tip: A room on a quiet side street of Kleinbasel trades a few extra minutes' walk for a chance of sleep between the Monday Cortège and the Tuesday Gugge concerts.

Liestal, the capital of Basel-Landschaft, celebrates Chienbäse with a parade and bonfires on the Sunday night after Mardi Gras 18. That puts the fires on the eve of the Basel Morgestraich, a pairing that suits visitors arriving on Sunday. The Drummeli at Messe Basel, from 30 January to 6 February 2027, gives a taste of the music in the weeks before the carnival 19.

Where Do the Schnitzelbängg Sing Their Verses?

The Schnitzelbängg are satirical rhyming songs in Basel dialect, and Basel Tourism calls them the epitome of carnival humour 7. The singers, who usually write the verses themselves, comment on the past year's political and social events with wit and a pinch of malice 7. They stand for word play, mockery and social criticism in Baseldeutsch 6.

Timing follows a fixed pattern. On Monday and Wednesday evenings the Schnitzelbängg perform in restaurants and theatres 6 7. On Tuesday evening they appear in clique cellars, where the cliques practise, and in private houses 7. The 2026 factsheet describes the Tuesday appearances as spontaneous visits to various clique cellars 6.

Each verse comes with its own picture, called a Helge, which the singers hold up to the audience 7. A good Helge hints at the theme of a verse without giving away the punchline 7. The Comité's glossary uses the same word for the illustration to a Schnitzelbank verse 2. Some poets also hand out their verses printed on coloured paper 15, which helps anyone whose Basel dialect is not up to the speed of the singing.

The Schnitzelbängg also reach a wider audience. In 2026 SRF 1 broadcast the “Fasnachtsläggerli”, a selection of the best Schnitzelbängg, at 15:30 on Tuesday and 15:25 on Wednesday 10. SRF reported that the Basel government president Conradin Cramer and the Eurovision Song Contest would feature on lanterns and in the verses that year 10. The Drummeli 2027 features two Schnitzelbängg per show, drawn from a line-up that includes Brunzguttere, Dreydaagsfliege, Heiri and Singvogel 19.

The Basel City Guide app lists the Schnitzelbängg along with the sujets 2. A table in a busy old-town restaurant on Monday or Wednesday evening is the classic place to hear them. Restaurants fill quickly on those nights, so an early arrival before the singers start their rounds pays off.

Tip: Listening quietly to the end of each verse keeps the punchline intact for the whole room.

Which Larven Characters Parade in the Basel Cortège?

At Basel Fasnacht the active participants hide their identity under a full costume, and the head-mask is called a Larve 7. Most Larven are still elaborately handcrafted, and many groups design their own costumes and masks 7. The Comité's glossary notes that active participants always wear a Larve 2. The sujet of a formation shows in its Larven, costumes and props, and on the large lantern that goes in front of each traditional clique 7.

Several classic characters return every year, and recognising them makes a Cortège easier to read 7:

  • Waggis: a caricature of a 19th-century Alsatian peasant, with a huge nose and a boisterous manner, often riding the floats 7 9
  • Harlequin: the chequered servant from Italy's Commedia dell'arte, with a cape, ruff and pompoms 7
  • Dummpeter: a childlike, dreamy figure with chubby cheeks, often seen in piccolo groups 7
  • Alti Dante: a caricature of a well-to-do older Basel lady in clothes reminiscent of the Biedermeier period 7
  • Ueli: a court jester in two-coloured clothes, fabric horns and many bells 7

The Waggis are the ones spectators meet most closely. From the trailers in the Cortège they throw oranges, sweets, flowers and confetti to the crowd 9. Wikipedia describes the custom that masked and costumed participants themselves are not subject to confetti attacks 9.

Behind the lantern and the Vortrab, the vanguard that hands out the Zeedel leaflets, come the pipers, the drum major and the drummers 2 7. The Zeedel carry satirical texts on the sujet 2. SRF noted that some sujets only become clear to spectators when the Zeedel and the costumes are read together 10.

Collectors of Fasnacht culture can see costumes, lanterns, masks and instruments outside the carnival days too. Basel Tourism points to the Museum der Kulturen Basel, which shows a cross-section of the carnival in its historical rooms 7.

Tip: A Larve is never touched or lifted by spectators; photos of the masks work best without flash and from a respectful distance.

How Does the Basel City Guide App Track Cortège Departures?

Around 200,000 visitors and around 20,000 active participants fill Basel during Fasnacht 8. Phones work hardest around the Marktplatz, Barfüsserplatz and Claraplatz, the three squares of the Tuesday Gugge concerts 6. Downloading maps and timetables before the Morgestraich leaves the live connection free for updates.

The Basel City Guide app, recommended by both the Comité and Basel Tourism, carries the sujets, the Schnitzelbängg, the Cortège routes, departure times, service notes and an interactive map 2 6. The BVB online timetable shows the carnival diversions, and the SBB timetable lists the extra trains 6 11. SRF 1 showed the 2026 Monday Cortège live from 14:00 10. Streaming it on the street uses far more data than maps or messages.

EuroAirport sits on French soil 13, so a roaming phone may pick up a French network in the terminal. An eSIM for Switzerland is one way to have Swiss mobile data from arrival.

  • Agree fixed meeting points and times with the group before 04:00 on Monday 2
  • Keep the screen dark during the Morgestraich, when light is unwelcome 2
  • Save the Comité island locations on the Marktplatz, Barfüsserplatz and Claraplatz 2 5

Safety in the crowd is mostly about staying together. Children can wear the Paddy badge from the Basel police, which carries a parent's phone number and is available at Basel police posts 2. Dogs and other animals stay at home 2. The medical services had six call-outs during the 2026 Morgestraich, which passed without major incidents 10. Switzerland's emergency numbers are 117 for police, 118 for fire and 144 for medical help, and 112 connects to an operator who puts the call through to the right service 16. Calls to all these numbers are free 16.

Tip: A hotel address and a meeting point written on paper still work if a battery dies in a dark lane before dawn.

Frequently asked questions

The Ändstraich closes the 72 hours of Basel Fasnacht at 04:00 on Thursday, which in 2027 is Thursday 18 February 2027 1 6. Just before 04:00, the cliques and Gugge bands walk to one of their regular meeting places and play a final march 7. Many cliques form a circle with their lanterns, play a chosen march and put the lanterns out one by one 9. Wednesday night before it is when the active participants go all out after midnight 7.

Basel Fasnacht always begins on the Monday after Ash Wednesday, one week later than carnival elsewhere in Switzerland or Germany 8 9. The reason remains unclear, and a common explanation links the later date to the Reformation in Basel, without documents from that era to prove it 9. Because the carnival starts on the Monday after Ash Wednesday 8, the start moves a lot: the Comité lists 15 February for 2027 and 11 March for 2030 1.

No. Costumes are reserved for the active participants, with an exception for children 6. The Fasnachts-Comité asks spectators to avoid painted faces, clown noses and fool's caps, and says swaying and bawling are frowned upon 2. Warm everyday clothes and a visible Blaggedde are the spectator's outfit 2. Marching in a Larve is for active participants, and the Comité notes that taking part actively needs proper preparation 2.

Half an hour before 04:00 on Monday is a sensible target. The lights go out at 04:00 when the Martinskirche bell strikes 6, and the Comité warns that the old town is packed by then and asks visitors to come early and without rush 2. Trams stopped entering the centre from about 03:30 on Monday in 2026, so walking in from the hotel is the reliable option 11.

Basel Tourism names the Barfüsserplatz, the Marktplatz, the Rümelinsplatz, the Falknerstrasse and the Freie Strasse as the busiest places for the Morgestraich 7. For less of a crush, it suggests the Leonhardskirchplatz, the Martinskirchplatz, the Nadelberg or the Münsterplatz 7. Wherever the spot, the Comité asks for no flash and no open curtains 2.

The Fasnachts-Comité provides a grandstand on the Claragraben with around 100 seats per Cortège afternoon; the free admission cards come from the Comité office and are limited 4. On the Claraplatz, the IVB provides around 50 wheelchair spaces and 200 chairs, with no registration and no reservations 4. Both are marked on the 2027 Cortège route plan, along with accessible toilets 5. Claragraben and Claraplatz lie in Kleinbasel, across the Mittlere Brücke from the Marktplatz.

The Drummeli is the Comité's indoor show before the carnival, not part of the 72 hours 19. In 2027 it runs from 30 January to 6 February 2027 in the Event Halle of Messe Basel, under the motto “Letschti Rundi” 19. Thirteen regular cliques, three Gugge bands, guest groups, Schnitzelbängg and an acting ensemble take part 19. Tickets are sold in advance, with presale opened on 5 November 2026 20.
