eSIM at Delhi Airport (DEL): How to Get Online Without the SIM Hassle

Landing at Delhi Airport (DEL)? Compare eSIM and local SIM options, see how airport Wi-Fi verification works, and get online after arrival.
eSIM at Delhi Airport (DEL): How to Get Online Without the SIM Hassle

Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) is India's busiest airport and the main international gateway to North India, and all international flights currently operate from Terminal 3. It is also trickier than most airports for getting a working data connection on arrival, which is exactly why an eSIM is worth setting up before you fly.

This guide covers how to land in Delhi already online, why the local SIM process and the airport Wi-Fi both catch travelers out, and how to reach the city safely once you are connected.

Quick answer

Yes. With an eSIM installed before you fly, you can be online moments after landing at DEL, with no SIM counter to find and no working local number required. Turn off airplane mode, set the travel eSIM as your data line, allow roaming on that line if your provider asks, and give it a short while to attach to an Indian network.

This matters more in India than at most destinations. Buying a local prepaid SIM involves identity checks and can take a while to activate, and the standard airport Wi-Fi login asks for an Indian mobile number to send a one-time password. Travelers without an Indian number can ask for help at the airport Wi-Fi or information desk, but arriving with an eSIM already working is simpler.

Why getting online at Delhi Airport is trickier than most

Two things regularly surprise travelers at DEL.

First, the free Wi-Fi is genuinely free, but the standard sign-in sends a one-time password (OTP) to a mobile number, and the form expects an Indian one. If you carry only a foreign SIM, the standard login may not send the OTP successfully, though the airport Wi-Fi and information desks can assist travelers without an Indian number.

Second, buying a local SIM is not a five-minute job. Foreign visitors are generally asked for their passport, a valid visa and local accommodation details, and the SIM may not work straight away because verification and activation steps vary by carrier and store.

An eSIM bought before departure avoids both. You land with a working data line, skip the OTP step, and do not need to complete India's SIM paperwork just to open a map or message your driver.

Does Delhi Airport have free Wi-Fi?

Yes, across the terminals and around the clock. On your device, select the "GMR Free Wi-Fi" network, enter a mobile number to receive an OTP, then set a 4-digit PIN for high-speed access, which the airport currently limits to two hours. The catch for arriving visitors is that OTP: it needs a number that can actually receive the code.

If your phone has only a foreign or non-working number, the airport directs you to the Wi-Fi team at the Information Kiosk for help getting connected. Full instructions are on the official Delhi Airport Wi-Fi page. As with any public airport network, save sensitive logins for a private connection.

How to set up and use an eSIM for India

An eSIM is a SIM your phone stores digitally. You load a plan from a QR code, an installation code or your provider's app, with no plastic card to swap. Do the setup at home on Wi-Fi, before you fly.

At home, before departure:

  1. Confirm your phone is unlocked and eSIM-capable with the Gohub device checker.

  2. Choose an India eSIM for a single-country trip, or browse all Gohub plans for a regional or global option if your route continues.

  3. Install the profile and label the line something like "India data".

  4. Leave that line, or its data roaming, switched off until you land in India, unless your plan says otherwise.

Loading the profile does not use your allowance, but some plans start their validity clock at installation, some at first use, and some when they first reach an Indian network. Check the activation terms and follow the steps in your Gohub order before you install.

After landing at DEL:

  1. Turn airplane mode off.

  2. Make the India eSIM your mobile-data line.

  3. Switch on data roaming for that line (a travel eSIM uses a local partner network, which is normal).

  4. Allow a few minutes for an Indian network to register, then open a map or messaging app to confirm you are online.

If it does not connect, restart the phone, recheck that data is assigned to the eSIM, and confirm any APN details from your provider. The airport Wi-Fi help desk can get you online in the meantime.

Can you buy a SIM card at Delhi Airport?

Yes, but it is less predictable than at many airports. Delhi Airport currently lists an Airtel service point for SIM cards, though its exact location, hours and accessibility from the international arrivals area may change, so confirm the details before relying on an airport SIM purchase. Jio and Vi stores are also widely available once you reach the city.

If you do buy a local prepaid SIM, expect to:

  • Present your passport, a valid Indian visa and local accommodation details, with additional verification depending on the carrier and store.

  • Wait for activation, which may take anywhere from a short while to several hours, so do not count on a newly bought physical SIM for an immediate pickup or ride booking.

Because of that, many visitors rely on an eSIM for the first day and treat a local SIM as an optional second step for a longer stay. For a longer-trip cost comparison, see eSIM vs a local physical SIM.

Which network will my eSIM use in India?

The network your Gohub India eSIM uses depends on the specific plan, so check the product page or your order details for the current partner network and coverage. India's big operators are Airtel, Jio and Vi (Vodafone Idea). Coverage across Delhi and other cities is generally good on 4G and 5G, with the usual slowdowns in metro tunnels, crowded markets and remote areas.

How much data do you need in India?

Rough planning figures rather than strict limits. Chat, maps and ride apps are light on data, while video, cloud backups and hotspotting are not.

Getting from Delhi Airport to the city

Terminal 3 handles most international arrivals. Once you have data, you can book a ride or check train times before you step outside.

  • Airport Metro Express (Orange Line): The fastest budget route, linking T3 with New Delhi Railway Station in around 20 minutes. Check the current first and last trains, frequency and fare with the Delhi Metro (DMRC).

  • Prepaid taxi: Book only through an official airport prepaid counter or a designated pickup point, where you pay a set fare in advance and get a receipt. Do not hand payment or booking details to unsolicited drivers inside the terminal, and check any unexpected claim about your hotel directly with your accommodation.

  • App cabs: Uber and Ola work well from the marked app pickup zones, which is where a live data connection really helps.

Fares and timings change, so confirm them on the official pages before you travel.

FAQ

Do I need an Indian visa or local address to use an eSIM?

No. Those are requirements for a local Indian prepaid SIM. A travel eSIM you buy abroad does not need India's SIM paperwork, though your plan still has its own terms.

Can a foreign number receive the Delhi Airport Wi-Fi OTP?

Usually not. The standard Wi-Fi login sends the code to an Indian mobile number, so a foreign number often cannot receive it. Travelers without an Indian SIM can ask at the airport Wi-Fi or information desk, or simply use a data eSIM, which needs no OTP.

Will my eSIM work without an Indian phone number?

Yes. A data eSIM gives you internet without a local number. You can call and message through WhatsApp and keep your home number active on your main SIM.

Which terminal handles international arrivals at Delhi Airport?

Terminal 3 handles Delhi Airport's international flights and also serves selected domestic flights, while Terminals 1 and 2 are used for domestic operations. Always confirm the terminal shown on your airline booking.

How long does a local SIM take to activate in India?

It varies by carrier and store, from a short wait to several hours, so do not rely on a newly bought SIM for an immediate airport pickup or ride booking.

Is an eSIM cheaper than roaming in India?

Frequently, depending on your home carrier. Because a prepaid travel eSIM is paid for up front, the price is fixed and easy to plan for.

India eSIM or a regional plan? Pick an India eSIM for a trip inside India, or a regional Asia or global plan if your route runs through several countries.
