Overview

On Jinibara Country, about 72 km north of Brisbane, the 39th Woodford Folk Festival turns Woodfordia into a temporary town of about 20,000 campers, glampers and day visitors a day from 27 December 2026 to 1 January 2027 10 18. The programme lists more than 1,500 shows, workshops and presentations by over 2,800 artists and presenters from 14 countries and 42 Indigenous Nations 10. New Year's Day 2027 opens with a Sunrise Ceremony led by the Monks of Tibet and closes with the Renewal Ceremony, the ritual that replaced the old Fire Event burn in 2023/24 10 15.

Why Are Lake Gkula Swim Slots Booked Through the WFF App?

On the organiser's swimming page archived in 2024, Lake Gkula swims were booked by the period: each lasted 50 minutes and started on the hour or half hour, and every swimmer booked through the WFF app or in person at the Lake Gkula Booking Tent 8. The wristband was then collected from the Booking Tent in the General Store Precinct and was valid only for the booked period, and the organiser recommended the app to families with little ones to avoid waiting 8. A phone with signal turns a spare hour between sets into a confirmed swim instead of a walk to the tent to find the slot already gone.

Where Do Groups Lose Each Other Between the Amphigrande and the Tinlids Venues?

Woodfordia had 27 venues in a May 2026 report, and the Tinlids Children's Festival alone uses nine of them in 2026/27 13 10. A parent at a Tinlids clay-play session and a friend at the Amphigrande, where Vikki Thorn presents ThornBird, can be a long walk apart 10. With about 20,000 people on site each day, a shared live-location pin does more than naming a venue as a meeting point 10.

Where Does the Caboolture Shuttle Pick Up for the Trip Back?

In 2025/26 the organiser's Getting Here page listed the Caboolture Station shuttle at $23.00 each way, with the return pickup at The Hop Spot, a tent behind the Transit Lounge at the Eastern Bloc 2. Caboolture sits about 24.3 km from Woodford 20. The organiser's Getting Here page sends riders to the bus operator's Woodford Folk timetable page. The Getting Here page adds that the bus operator's timetables go live from 1 December each year 2. Checking the current timetable on a phone at the campground avoids a long wait at the wrong stop.

What Happens at a Woodfordia Bar When a Phone Wallet Dies?

Bars at Woodfordia accept cards only, EFTPOS is taken throughout the festival and cash works at some outlets only 4. ATMs on site accept most foreign cards and AMEX, but travellers cheques cannot be used 4. The Power Up tent in the General Store precinct charges phones 4. In 2024/25 the organiser listed its hours as 8AM to 10PM daily 5. A phone wallet only works with battery left at the bar.

Why Does the 39th Woodford Folk Festival End With Two Ceremonies on 1 January?

The 39th Woodford Folk Festival runs from 27 December 2026 to 1 January 2027, its 32nd year at Woodfordia 10 13. On 1 January 2027 the morning opens with a Sunrise Ceremony led by the Monks of Tibet and the evening closes with the Renewal Ceremony 10. Between the two sits a long tradition of rituals: the Sunrise Ceremony has been held on the Woodfordia hilltop with Tibetan chants and guest musicians, and the 3 Minutes Silence gathers festival-goers for candle-lit quiet to welcome the new year 18.

The calendar comes from the festival's history. It began as the Maleny Folk Festival in 1987 and moved about 20 km to Woodford in 1994 after outgrowing the Maleny Showgrounds 18. After flood damage in 2011, the local council bought the 500-acre property and leased it back to the organisers for 50 years, which is why Woodfordia now works as a permanent village rebuilt each summer 18.

Key dates for the 2026/27 edition, in order:

  • 29 May 2026, 9am: public ticket sales opened, after member presales ran 15 per cent above previous years 13
  • Mid-October 2026: the programme and artist line-up were announced 13 10
  • 31 October 2026: the payment plan closed 10
  • 27 December 2026 to 1 January 2027: the six festival days 10

The scale of that week is easy to underestimate. The Queensland Government reported almost 108,000 attendances across the six days of the 2025/26 festival and expects the 2026/27 edition to add $29.8 million to the state economy 11. Head of programming Chloe Goodyear says about 65 per cent of the content is new each year, so a returning visitor still meets a different programme 10. Names on the 2026/27 bill include Peter Garrett and The Alter Egos with a sunset set and a talk on the AUKUS inquiry, The Herd marking 20 years of The Sun Never Sets, and DZ Deathrays making their festival debut 12.

Which Price Round Is Left After Woodford's Early Bird Tiers Sold Out?

Woodford sells tickets in rounds, and Early Bird rounds have no fixed end date: when the tickets in one round sell out, the next round begins 4. On the 2025/26 price page the presale round ran until 24 December, prices then rose for online sales during the festival and again at the gate, and Early Bird rounds were not available through payment plans 1. Youth tickets cover ages 13 to 17, child tickets ages 6 to 12, and toddlers aged 0 to 5 enter free in every category 1.

Presale prices for 2025/26, per person, the latest season on the archived price page 1:

  • Adult season with camping: $682 in 2025/26, rising to $708 online during the festival and $756 at the gate 1
  • Youth season with camping: $391 in 2025/26 1
  • Child season with camping: $91 in 2025/26 1
  • Adult season without camping: $550 in 2025/26 1
  • Adult day with camping: $183 in 2025/26, then $188 online during the festival and $198 at the gate 1
  • Adult day without camping: $142 in 2025/26 1
  • Youth day with camping: $107 in 2025/26 1
  • Child day with camping: $41 in 2025/26 1

In 2025/26 payment plans carried a one-off $30 admin fee, and booking fees are non-refundable 4. The payment plan closed on 31 October 2026 10. A season ticket covers all six festival days from 27 December to 1 January, and camping on 25 and 26 December is only for season ticket holders, with Christmas Day camping bought before arrival 4.

For the 2025/26 festival, Woodford ran a discounted allocation called Mobtix for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and for Maori, Pasifika and First Nations people from other countries, at 40 per cent off gate prices 4. The discount applies to the ticket only; food, drinks, transport and add-ons cost extra, and standard booking fees apply 4. Tickets in that allocation were released first come, first served, and 2025/26 registrations closed at 5pm on 19 December 2025 4.

Demand sets the pace of these rounds. A Moreton Daily report on 27 May 2026 said member presales ran 15 per cent above previous years, ahead of public sales opening at 9am on Friday 29 May 2026 13.

Which Stops Does the Festival Express Make Between Roma Street and the Eastern Bloc?

The Woodford Festival Express is the coach from Brisbane to the festival ticketing gate, and on the 2025/26 timetable published on the organiser's Getting Here page it left Roma Street at 8:30am, called at Chermside at 9:15am and North Lakes at 9:45am, and reached the Transit Lounge at the Eastern Bloc at 11:15am 2. For 2025/26 the organiser's recent-changes page put the outbound run on 26 December and the return on 2 January 3.

In 2025/26 the Roma Street, Chermside and North Lakes fares were each listed at $55 return, plus GST and booking fees 2. A valid ticket must be shown to board, and the organiser offers strictly no refunds on coach seats 2.

How the stops lined up on 26 December 2025, the latest published timetable 2:

  • 8:30am, Roma Street: the central Brisbane departure in 2025/26 2
  • 9:15am, Chermside: the northern suburbs pickup in 2025/26 2
  • 9:45am, North Lakes: the final suburban pickup in 2025/26 2
  • 11:15am, Transit Lounge at the Eastern Bloc: arrival at Woodfordia in 2025/26 2

The arrival point matters more than it looks. The Eastern Bloc is the hub for the site: overnight guests of season campers take a shuttle from its Transit Lounge to the Season Campgrounds, and wheelchair accessible buses are available on request from the Transit Lounge at the Eastern Bloc and from the Welcome Gate 7 4. In 2025/26 the Caboolture Station shuttle, at $23.00 each way, picked up for the return leg at The Hop Spot behind the same Transit Lounge 2.

For anyone driving, Woodford town sits on the D'Aguilar Highway about 24.3 km from Caboolture, and the festival site lies near the town 20 18.

What Replaced the Fire Event at Woodford's New Year's Day Close?

For most of its history the festival ended with the Fire Event, a New Year's Day ceremony in which more than 20,000 festival-goers watched dance, music and fire before a large structure was burned 18. It was developed by Neil Cameron at the Maleny festival, and the January 2000 Fire Event was broadcast live around the world to mark the new millennium 18. Creative directors included Paul Lawler from 2003 to 2011 and Alex Podger from 2014 to 2022 18.

The format changed for the 2023/24 festival 15. On the night of 1 January 2024 the closing became “The Renewal”, a ritual in which the village voices its hopes for the coming year, and the fire structure was no longer burned 15. That production, titled A Village Dreams, was directed by Linsey Pollak and Mark Bromilow with projection artist Craig Walsh 15. Some coverage still uses the old name: a trade report on the 2025/26 festival described the New Year's Day close as the Fire Event 14.

For 2026/27 the programme names a Sunrise Ceremony with the Monks of Tibet on the morning of 1 January 2027 and the Renewal Ceremony that evening as the close of the festival 10. The organiser has not described the 2027 ceremony in detail, so the published programme is the place to check whether any fire element returns 10.

Founder Bill Hauritz died in December 2025, and a trade report said he would be honoured during the 2025/26 edition 14. Festival director Amanda Jackes put it this way in December 2023: “We see the end of the year – Woodford time – as a time for revelling and reckoning” 15.

Why Are Glass, Fires and Generators Banned in Woodfordia's Campgrounds?

Woodfordia runs on its own resources, and its campground rules follow from that. The organiser states that no fires, glass or animals are allowed in the campgrounds or on the festival site, and generators are not permitted in the campgrounds because of noise and pollution concerns 7. With about 20,000 campers, glampers and day visitors on site each day of the 2026/27 festival, one broken bottle or a grass fire affects a whole field of tents 10.

Water is the second constraint. The festival's reticulated supply comes from Woodfordia's own dam through an on-site treatment plant, and although all tap water is potable, the organiser asks campers to bring all the water they need for the stay 7. Toilets and showers are described as “adequately basic”, and shower queues peak in the mornings and later afternoons, which the organiser suggests avoiding to skip the wait 7.

Campsites are not allocated and go on a first in, first served basis 4. Campers may not lay tarps to hold ground for family or friends arriving later, and security asks anyone doing so to remove the tarp 7. The rule bites hardest when a group arrives on different days, for example one half setting up on 26 December and the rest arriving for the opening on 27 December 2026 4 10.

The rules that change a packing list most 7:

  • No glass: glass is banned in the campgrounds and on the festival site 7
  • No fires: fires are banned in every campground and across the site 7
  • No generators: campsites have no electricity apart from booked powered sites and the accessibility area 7
  • No tarps to reserve space: tarps or ropes left to hold spots are removed by security 3
  • No animals: domestic pets stay home, though registered assistance animals are welcome 4

For extra nights nearby, the organiser's camping page lists camping sites at the Woodford Showgrounds, about 5 minutes from the festival site 7.

Which Season Campgrounds Hold Woodfordia's Powered Sites?

Powered sites at Woodfordia are an add-on for Season with Camping ticket holders only, and on the organiser's 2025/26 camping page they sat in the Season Campgrounds on the main festival site, in the Parklands 7. In 2025/26 the price page listed a powered site at $600 1. Campers need a lead of at least 15 m, and powered sites have no water connection 7.

For 2025/26 campers could choose their specific powered site when booking 3. When powered campsites moved on site in 2025, the organisers said this ended the need for shuttle buses to reach them 16.

The camping tickets that exist only at Woodford:

  • Season camping: the six festival days from 27 December to 1 January, with set-up from 26 December and Christmas Day camping for season ticket holders only 4
  • Reserved Camping Area: a flat, pre-marked 10 m × 8 m site in the Season Campgrounds, $280 in 2025/26 1 7
  • Powered site: $600 in 2025/26, for caravans, RVs, buses and camper trailers but not tents 1 7
  • Overnight guests: up to four people at a time join a season camper's existing site, each with an overnight ticket 4 7

Overnight guests may not bring vehicles into the season campgrounds; they catch a shuttle from the Eastern Bloc Transit Lounge instead 4 7. Guests must fit inside the season camper's existing van, tent or awning, without adding extra tents or vans 7.

Pre-erected tents go fastest. Glamping for the 2025/26 festival had booked out by late May 2025, months before the gates opened 16. By May 2026 the organiser's FAQ page listed glamping tents for the 2026/27 festival as sold out 4.

How Do the 50-Minute Swim Sessions at Lake Gkula Work?

Lake Gkula is a fully fenced swimming lake inside Woodfordia, and on the organiser's swimming page archived in 2024 it opened at 6am and closed at 6:30pm during the festival 8. The 2024 page set swimming periods of 50 minutes starting on the hour and half hour, so 6:00 to 6:50am overlapped with 6:30 to 7:20am 8. In 2026/27 the Meditation in Motion programme also lists swimming in Lake Gkula alongside yoga, forest-bathing and hilltop sunrises 10.

On the 2024 page every swimmer booked through the WFF app or in person at the Lake Gkula Booking Tent, then collected a wristband from the Booking Tent in the General Store Precinct 8. The wristband was valid only for the booked 50-minute period 8.

Rules at the lake on the organiser's 2024 page 8:

  • Children under 15: must be accompanied and supervised by an adult, with no more than two under-15s per adult 8
  • Little ones: children aged 5 or under stay within arm's reach and wear aquatic nappies or swimwear 8
  • No diving: jump only from the designated rock 8
  • No cosmetics or sunscreen: unless every ingredient is certified organic, reef friendly or 100% zinc, to protect the lake's creatures 8
  • No floats: inflatables, toys and other plastics stay out of the water 8
  • No alcohol: intoxicated people are refused entry to the lake precinct 8

Trained safety observers watch the lake, and swimmers enter and leave the water from the beaches only 8. The lake water is not disinfected, so the organiser asks anyone with a communicable disease or diarrhoea not to swim 8.

Where Is the Power Up Tent in Woodfordia's General Store Precinct?

The main charging point at Woodfordia is the Power Up tent in the General Store precinct, which charges mobile phones, cameras and laptop batteries 4. In 2024/25 the organiser's Facilities page listed its hours as 8AM to 10PM daily, with fees applying 5. Cables are supplied, but the organiser notes that charging tends to work best with a visitor's own charger 5. Power banks are available to rent or buy, and some bars have their own charging stations 4.

A phone does more work at Woodford than at most camping weekends. Lake Gkula swims were booked in the WFF app on the organiser's 2024 page, and the 2026/27 programme spreads more than 1,500 shows, workshops and presentations across 27 venues over the six days from 27 December 2026 8 10 13. In the Festival Filmmakers Fast Film Comp, patrons aged 10 and up shoot a 45 to 60 second film on their phones during the first two days of the 2026/27 festival 11.

Payments lean on cards too. Bars accept cards only, EFTPOS is taken throughout the festival, and cash works only at some outlets 4. ATMs across the site accept most foreign cards and AMEX, though travellers cheques are not accepted 4.

The Sunrise Ceremony with the Monks of Tibet opens 1 January 2027, and in 2024/25 the Power Up tent did not open until 8AM 10 5. A phone charged the night before is ready for the hilltop at dawn. Coverage details for an Australian data plan are on the Australia eSIM page.

Which Glass House Mountains Peaks Can Be Climbed Near Woodfordia?

The Glass House Mountains rise beside the Bruce Highway on the way north from Brisbane, and Glass House Mountains National Park lies about 70 km from the city, close to the 72 km run to Woodford 19 18. The park covers about 883 hectares in eight sections and includes eleven of the 16 Glass House Mountains, with access via the Steve Irwin Way exit 19. A half-day climb before 26 December 2026 or after the festival ends on 1 January 2027 fits a Woodford trip 10.

Not every peak is open, and the rules differ by mountain 19:

  • Mount Tibrogargan, 364 m: open to the public for climbing 19
  • Mount Ngungun, 253 m: a walking track reaches the summit 19
  • Mount Beerwah, 556 m: the highest peak, with tourist-track access restricted since 2009 19
  • Mount Coonowrin, 377 m: closed to the public since 1999 because of rock stability concerns 19

The mountains are central to local creation stories, and their spiritual and social importance to Aboriginal people continues today; the Kabi Kabi, also spelled Gubbi Gubbi, are the local Aboriginal group named in the park's history 19. That connects with the festival programme, where Gubbi Gubbi Dance and the Jinibara Dance Group appear in 2026/27 10. The park was listed on the Queensland Heritage Register on 3 May 2007 19.

For a night outside Woodfordia, the park has campgrounds at Glass House Mountains township and at Coochin Creek, west of Beerwah 19. Either works for a stop before the festival opens on 27 December 2026 or after the close on 1 January 2027 10.

Frequently asked questions

Not since the 2023/24 festival, when the New Year's Day close became The Renewal and the fire structure was no longer burned 15. For 2026/27 the programme lists the Renewal Ceremony on the evening of 1 January 2027 as the closing event, after a Sunrise Ceremony with the Monks of Tibet that morning 10. The older Fire Event drew more than 20,000 people and was broadcast live worldwide in January 2000 18.

Stardust Songwriters is a nightly folk club new to the 2026/27 programme, set in an alcohol-free precinct at Woodfordia 10. Each night four singer-songwriters share a song circle, followed by a featured artist, and patrons are welcome to bring craft projects to work on while they listen 10. It sits alongside more than 1,500 shows, workshops and presentations across the six days to 1 January 2027 10.

For 2025/26, Mobtix was a discounted allocation for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and for Maori, Pasifika and First Nations people from other countries, priced at 40 per cent off gate prices 4. The discount covers the ticket only; food, drinks, transport and add-ons cost extra, and booking fees apply 4. Tickets were released first come, first served, and 2025/26 registrations closed at 5pm on 19 December 2025 4.

Yes: up to four people at a time can stay overnight with a season camper, each holding an overnight ticket and registered in advance by that camper 4 7. Guests must fit inside the season camper's existing site footprint, cannot bring a vehicle into the season campgrounds and travel by shuttle from the Eastern Bloc Transit Lounge 4 7. It suits friends visiting for one night of the six from 27 December 2026 10.

Patrons aged 10 and up can enter the Festival Filmmakers Fast Film Comp at the 2026/27 festival 11. Entrants make a 45 to 60 second film on their phones during the first two days of the festival, with help available for shooting and editing 11. The competition runs at Woodfordia between 27 December 2026 and 1 January 2027, alongside the Elements Collective Open Style Dance Battle over two days 11.

The Planting is a separate weekend festival at Woodfordia built around tree planting, talks and workshops on regenerative living, and in 2025 attendance was capped at 1,500 people 17. Since the first planting in 1997, more than 135,000 trees have been planted to regenerate the site 17. The May 2025 edition ran from 2 to 4 May and added more than 2,000 native rainforest trees of 157 species 17 16.
