What Breaks When Your Signal Drops on the Bricks?

A day at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival is short on screen time and heavy on small logistics, and most of those logistics run through a phone. Once the actors are onstage in the Angus Bowmer, Thomas or Allen Elizabethan theatre, phones go off 7. The hours either side are where a dead connection hurts.

Much of the street parking downtown is limited to two hours before 5:30 PM, so a matinee-goer who parked on the street may need to move the car into the Hargadine Parking Garage, whose kiosks take cards only or a phone payment through a QR code 5. On smoky or stormy evenings OSF may delay an outdoor start, and it tells ticket holders by email 14. After the last Route 10 bus has left Ashland, the ride back to a Medford hotel depends on an app 19 8. And a group that splits between the Shrek queue at the Elizabethan and the Thomas Theatre lobby needs its messages to land before the doors close. Having data working on the walk up Pioneer Street keeps the evening on schedule.

Paying for the Hargadine Garage by Phone

The three-level Hargadine Parking Garage behind the Thomas Theatre has pay kiosks on the bottom and top levels only, and they accept credit cards, not cash 5. Blue signs throughout the garage carry a QR code that opens the operator's payment site on your phone 5. With signal, you pay from the car instead of climbing a level to find a kiosk.

Catching a Smoke Delay Email Before Curtain

When weather affects an outdoor performance at the Allen Elizabethan Theatre, OSF may delay the start, and ticket holders hear about any change by email 14. Wildfire smoke is the real late-summer risk: in 2018 smoke cancelled 26 outdoor performances 20. Check your inbox and the Performance Status page before leaving the hotel.

Booking a Ride After the Last Route 10 Bus

The weekday Route 10 timetable shows the last bus leaving the Ashland Bi-Mart stop at 7:28 PM 19. An evening play ends long after that, so anyone sleeping in Medford needs a taxi or a ride-share, both of which operate in the area 8. Book from the Bricks as the audience files out, before everyone else reaches for the same cars.

The complete guide

When Is Oregon Shakespeare Festival in 2027?

The Oregon Shakespeare Festival's 2027 season runs from March 12 to October 31, 2027 in Ashland, Oregon, with Hamlet opening first in the Angus Bowmer Theatre on March 12 and closing the season on October 31 1. OSF announced the lineup on May 20, 2026 and said the full season calendar, with performance times and casting, would follow in the autumn 1.

This is not a festival of one weekend. It is a rotating repertory: several productions share each stage, so the play on a Tuesday night can differ from Wednesday's, and every production has its own run inside the season. These are the published runs:

  • Hamlet, Angus Bowmer Theatre: March 12 – October 31, 2027 1

  • A Doll's House, Angus Bowmer Theatre: March 13 – October 30, 2027 1

  • A Loco-Motive For Murder, Angus Bowmer Theatre: March 14 – July 11, 2027 1

  • What the Constitution Means to Me, Thomas Theatre: March 17 – July 31, 2027 1

  • The Winter's Tale, Thomas Theatre: April 14 – October 30, 2027 1

  • The Comedy of Errors, Allen Elizabethan Theatre: May 28 – October 16, 2027 1

  • Shrek The Musical, Allen Elizabethan Theatre: May 29 – October 15, 2027 1

  • Purpose, Angus Bowmer Theatre: July 29 – October 30, 2027 1

  • Frida … A Self Portrait, Thomas Theatre: August 11 – October 29, 2027 1

No single week covers all nine. A Loco-Motive For Murder closes on July 11, and Frida … A Self Portrait opens on August 11, so the fullest windows are May 29 to July 11, 2027 and August 11 to October 15, 2027, each with seven of the nine productions playing 1.

The shape of the year matters as much as the dates. March and April are indoor-only, with the Bowmer and Thomas stages running and the outdoor Allen Elizabethan Theatre dark until late May. Summer adds the two outdoor shows and the free Green Show, which runs from May 28 to September 25, 2027 3. October keeps almost everything on the boards but loses the courtyard entertainment and brings colder nights.

Planning around the calendar is simple once it is published: pick the plays you want, find the nights they overlap, then book the room. Until then, the run dates above are enough to choose a month.

Tip: An October trip trades the free Green Show for clear, crisp weather and the late-opening Purpose and Frida … A Self Portrait, both of which run to the season's final week 1 6.

What Do OSF Seats Cost From Zone C to Zone A+?

Every play at the festival needs a ticket, and 2027 seats cost from $41 to $145 per person, including a non-refundable $5 Venue Support Fee 2. The only free stage is the Green Show on the courtyard 3. OSF says its own website is the only official place to buy tickets, so be wary of resale sites that list seats before the box office does 2.

Prices depend on three things: the theatre, the seating zone (A+, A, B or C) and the day. Previews are cheapest, Tuesday and Sunday evenings sit in the middle, and every other performance carries the full price. For the 2027 season the grid looks like this:

  • Angus Bowmer Theatre, Zone A+: $102 at previews, $123 on Tuesday and Sunday evenings, $144 at other times 2

  • Allen Elizabethan Theatre, Zone A+: $102, $125 and $145 2

  • Thomas Theatre, Zone A, its top zone: $89, $108 and $129 2

  • Zone C in all three theatres: $41, $45 and $52 2

Youth aged 6 to 17 save 20% on Zone A, B or C seats; Zone A+ is excluded and the discount cannot be combined with other offers 2. OSF also warns that prices may rise as performances become popular, so the early buyer pays less for the same seat 2.

For the Oregon Shakespeare Festival's 2027 season in Ashland, tickets go on general sale in early December 2026, with OSF members getting earlier access; the 2027 production pages list a member presale from November 3 1 11. Sold-out nights are not always final: members can join a wait list by paying the full adult A+ price in advance, and are emailed at least 72 hours before curtain if seats come through 2.

Previews are worth knowing about beyond the price. They happen just before opening night, the artistic team sits in the audience taking notes, and video recording may be in use 2. You see the production slightly before it is locked.

Add-ons are cheap next to the seats. A 30-minute Preface, which covers the play, its author and OSF's approach, costs $15 for individuals 12. Post-show talkbacks after select Friday and Saturday matinees are free with that performance's ticket 13.

Tip: A Tuesday or Sunday evening saves $21 on a Bowmer Zone A+ seat: $123 instead of $144 for the same seat on a Saturday 2.

How Do You Reach 15 S. Pioneer St. From Medford Airport?

The nearest airport is Rogue Valley International–Medford Airport (MFR), 3 miles north of downtown Medford, and Ashland sits about 12 miles southeast of Medford on Interstate 5 18 17. The theatres share one address, 15 S. Pioneer St., just above the downtown shopping streets 4.

Nonstop flights into MFR come from Portland, Seattle, Los Angeles and San Diego on Alaska Airlines, San Francisco and Denver on United, Salt Lake City and Seattle on Delta, Phoenix on American Eagle, and Las Vegas and Orange County on Allegiant 18. Long-haul visitors connect through one of those hubs.

Driving is the other common route. Ashland is 350 miles north of San Francisco and 285 miles south of Portland, in the Rogue River valley at the foot of the Siskiyou and Cascade ranges 4. The drive is straightforward; parking at the end is the harder part.

Public transport works for daytime trips only. RVTD Route 10 links Front Street Station in Medford with Ashland, stopping at the Ashland Plaza and Southern Oregon University 19. The weekday timetable runs every 30 minutes from 5:00 AM, takes about 58 minutes end to end, and the last bus leaves Front Street at 8:19 PM and the Ashland Bi-Mart stop at 7:28 PM 19. OSF itself describes public transport access as limited and points visitors to the taxis and ride-share services in the area 8.

For anyone getting to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in 2027 by car, these are the parking options OSF describes in Ashland 5:

  • Hargadine Parking Garage, three levels, behind the Thomas Theatre; card-only kiosks or a QR code payment 5

  • Several four-hour lots within a few blocks of the theatres 5

  • Street parking, much of it limited to two hours before 5:30 PM 5

  • Parking along the creek in Lithia Park, with a walk to the theatres through the park 5

OSF suggests adding 15 to 20 minutes to your arrival time to find a space and walk up 5. The climb is real: the town sits in the Siskiyou Mountains and the route from Main Street to the box office goes uphill, which matters for anyone using a mobility device 8. The lower level of the Hargadine garage offers the most level drop-off point 8.

Tip: Ask your hotel whether it runs transport to the theatres; OSF recommends it as a way to skip downtown parking altogether 5.

What Runs on Each of the Three Ashland Stages?

Each evening revolves around three theatres a few steps apart: the 601-seat Angus Bowmer Theatre, the Thomas Theatre with 270 to 360 seats depending on its layout, and the outdoor Allen Elizabethan Theatre with 1,190 seats on orchestra and balcony levels 7.

The Allen Elizabethan has the best backstory. It stands inside the cement walls left from Ashland's old Chautauqua dome, and a local teacher, Angus L. Bowmer, thought those walls looked like the sketches of Elizabethan theatres he had seen, which is how the festival began 9.

At the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in 2027, the Ashland stages divide the season like this 1:

  • Angus Bowmer Theatre: Hamlet, directed by Rosa Joshi; A Doll's House in Amy Herzog's version; the world premiere of A Loco-Motive For Murder, a Marx Brothers–style train mystery by Mark Bedard and John Tufts; and Purpose by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, directed by Tim Bond 1

  • Thomas Theatre: What the Constitution Means to Me by Heidi Schreck, The Winter's Tale directed by Shana Cooper, and Frida … A Self Portrait, a solo show by Vanessa Severo 1

  • Allen Elizabethan Theatre: The Comedy of Errors directed by Marcela Lorca, and Shrek The Musical directed by Bill Fennelly 1

Around the plays, the campus fills the rest of the day. The free Green Show plays the Courtyard Stage Tuesday to Saturday at 6:30 PM between May 28 and September 25, 2027 3. On select Green Show evenings from June through September, a wine and beer garden opens on the Bricks from 6:00 to 7:00 PM, with Rogue Valley wine and beer for guests aged 21 and over with valid ID 3. Prefaces run 30 minutes before productions and cost $15 12. Talkbacks follow select Friday matinees in the Bowmer and Saturday matinees in the Thomas, start 10 to 15 minutes after the bows, and last about 25 minutes 13.

Curtain discipline is strict because the repertory schedule is tight. In the Bowmer and the Elizabethan, latecomers wait for a suitable break; in the Thomas, late seating depends on the play, and anyone shut out watches on the lobby monitors 7. Only food and drink bought at the concessions booth may go into the theatres 7. Bags may be inspected before you enter, and the campus is weapons-free 15.

Tip: Read OSF's suitability notes before choosing: Hamlet includes violent deaths, What the Constitution Means to Me has strong profanity, and Shrek The Musical carries scary fairy-tale moments 10.

How Cold Does the Open-Air Elizabethan Get After Dark?

Cold enough to need a jacket, even in July. Ashland's July normals are a high of 88.1°F and a low of 50.6°F, so a Shrek performance that starts in warm air can end in sweater weather 17 6. OSF's own advice is that summer days get quite warm but evenings cool off, so bring a jacket or sweater to the outdoor theatre 6.

These are Ashland's long-term monthly normals, high and low, with average precipitation 17:

  • March: 58.0°F and 31.8°F, 2.03 in 17

  • May: 71.1°F and 41.2°F, 1.64 in 17

  • July: 88.1°F and 50.6°F, 0.44 in 17

  • August: 87.4°F and 49.4°F, 0.37 in 17

  • September: 80.8°F and 43.3°F, 0.50 in 17

  • October: 68.0°F and 36.1°F, 1.41 in 17

The town sits at 1,949 ft, which explains the big swing between afternoon and night 17. Spring is mild but can bring showers, and autumn days are clear and bright with crisp nights 6. At the Allen Elizabethan Theatre the temperature can swing from hot to chilly to downright cold, and blankets can be rented before the show 7. Indoors, the Bowmer and Thomas can feel cold from the air conditioning, so carry a layer there too 7.

Smoke is the risk that catches visitors out. In the 2018 season, wildfire smoke forced the Oregon Shakespeare Festival to cancel 26 outdoor performances in Ashland, costing it about $2 million, and ticket holders were offered an exchange, a refund or the option to donate the ticket value 20. OSF now posts changes on its Performance Status page and may delay outdoor starts when weather intervenes 14.

When to arrive depends on what you want. The Green Show lawn fills before 6:30 PM; blankets cannot be left unattended before 5:00 PM, and chairs more than one inch off the ground go on the perimeter 3. For the plays themselves, arriving 15 to 20 minutes early covers parking and the walk 5.

Tip: For outdoor shows in August, check the Performance Status page and your email on the afternoon of the play rather than the night before 14.

Which Ashland Neighbourhood Puts You Within Walking Distance of the Bricks?

Downtown is the place to stay: the theatres sit just above East Main Street, and a room within walking distance removes both the two-hour street parking limit before 5:30 PM and the late drive 5. OSF's own lodging list shows how the town divides 16.

  • Downtown and East Main Street: historic hotels steps from the theatres, the shortest walk home after an evening play 16

  • Quiet streets a few blocks from OSF, such as Gresham Street: bed and breakfasts, including a 1920s Craftsman house four blocks from OSF 16

  • Siskiyou Boulevard near Southern Oregon University: inns and B&Bs along the Route 10 bus line 16 19

  • Ashland Street near the freeway: larger hotels with parking, pools and room for families or groups 16

  • West Jackson Road and North Main Street: mineral-springs and historic-home properties on the edge of town 16

Medford, about 12 miles away, has more chain hotels near the airport, but it means driving after every evening show, since the last bus leaves Ashland at 7:28 PM 17 19. For a three-night play trip, that drive adds up.

OSF runs a Lodging Partners programme: guests who book an accommodation package directly with a partner property receive a 20% discount on OSF shows, on B and C seating only 16. The published offer ran through October 25, 2026, so check whether it has been renewed before booking for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival's 2027 season in Ashland 16.

Rooms and seats are tied to the same nights, so book them in the same sitting. Once the 2027 season calendar is out, the nights when the two outdoor shows and the big Bowmer titles overlap will be the ones everyone wants 1. Weekdays, and especially Tuesday and Sunday, give you both cheaper seats and more choice of rooms 2.

Tip: Pack unscented toiletries: OSF asks staff and patrons not to use scented products on campus, and smoking or vaping is not allowed there 8.

When Does Your Phone Matter on an OSF Evening?

Before and after the play, not during it. OSF asks you to switch phones off once actors are onstage, though photos and selfies are fine in the lobby and in the theatre before the show, at intermission and after the bows 7. Even at full houses, the numbers are modest: when all three theatres let out together, at most about 2,151 people spill onto the Bricks, based on the 601, 360 and 1,190 seat capacities 7. Plan on your own mobile data rather than venue Wi-Fi as the working connection.

At the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in 2027, the phone does these jobs in Ashland:

  • Paying in the Hargadine Parking Garage by QR code when the kiosk is on the other level 5

  • Receiving OSF's emails about delays and changes to outdoor performances 14

  • Booking a taxi or ride-share after the 7:28 PM last Route 10 bus from Ashland 19 8

  • Reading the suitability notes and content warnings before choosing a play 10

  • Requesting audio description, which must be booked at least two weeks ahead, or checking caption availability 8

  • Following maps between Lithia Park, the Plaza and Pioneer Street

The amount of data is small because the heavy hours are spent watching theatre. Maps, email, a ride app and a few photo uploads cover most days; video calls home from the Plaza or Lithia Park are the main thing that pushes usage up.

Visitors from abroad have two choices: roaming on a home plan, or a local data plan installed before the flight lands in Medford. A United States eSIM can be installed at home on Wi-Fi and switched on when the plane touches down at MFR, so maps and ride apps work from the baggage hall. Keep the physical SIM in the phone for bank text messages.

Tip: Sign up for OSF emails before you travel; notices about performance changes only reach people on the email list 14.

Frequently asked questions

No. Children under 6 are not admitted to OSF performances, but they are welcome at the free Green Show on the Bricks 7. From age 6, children may attend any show, and youth aged 6 to 17 save 20% on Zone A, B or C seats 7 2. Shrek The Musical is the family pick of the 2027 season, though OSF warns of scary fairy-tale moments and mild innuendo 10.

OSF may delay or change an outdoor performance when conditions are not safe, and it notifies ticket holders by email, so join its email list before you travel 14. In 2018, smoke forced 26 outdoor cancellations, and ticket holders could exchange, take a refund or donate the ticket value 20. That year a local high school theatre with 400 seats took some of the displaced audience 20.

Yes. The Green Show is free outdoor entertainment on the Courtyard Stage, Tuesday to Saturday at 6:30 PM from May 28 to September 25, 2027 3. You cannot bring your own alcohol, chairs more than one inch high go on the edge of the lawn, and blankets cannot be left unattended before 5:00 PM 3. It is also the one OSF stage open to children under 6 7.

Yes. Previews are the lowest-priced performances of each run: a Zone A+ seat in the Angus Bowmer Theatre costs $102 at a preview against $144 at most other times in 2027 2. Previews come just before opening night, the artistic team sits in the audience taking notes, and video recording may be in use 2. The show is nearly finished, and the saving is real.

Not all nine. A Loco-Motive For Murder closes on July 11, 2027, before Purpose opens on July 29 and Frida … A Self Portrait on August 11 1. A trip between May 29 and July 11, 2027, or between August 11 and October 15, 2027, can catch seven of the nine productions 1. Check the season calendar for which nights each play runs.

Not much, because phones stay off during performances 7. Data goes on maps between Lithia Park and Pioneer Street, paying for the Hargadine garage by QR code, reading OSF emails about outdoor delays, and booking a ride after the last Route 10 bus 5 14 19. A small plan covers that; regular video calls or heavy photo uploads are what push usage up.
