Why Does a Quan Ho Evening on Lim Hill Depend on Your Phone?

On the 12th day of the first lunar month the festival does not end when the daytime rites do. In 2026 five quan ho artisan families opened their homes for night singing from about 19:00, the main stage on Lim Hill carried a performance by the Bac Ninh Quan Ho Theatre, and fireworks went up over Van Tuong lake at 21:00 5. None of that is on a printed board at the bus stop. Village names such as Lung Giang, Lung Son, Due Dong and Lo Bao are spread across Tien Du, and the hosts' houses are found by map pin or by asking, not by street signs 1. About 165,000 people were estimated to have come in a single night in 2026, which is the moment mobile networks in the lanes around the hill are most stretched 7. If your phone drops out at the wrong moment you lose the map, the ride home and the group you came with, so sort out your data before you reach Tien Du.

Meeting Your Group Between Lim Hill and Van Tuong Lake

Quan ho is sung at the same time on the hilltop and at the lake, so a group splits easily. In 2026 twelve singing tents were spread between the two places, with boat singing on the water in the afternoon 5 6. Drop a shared map pin before you separate, because a voice call across a packed slope is rarely heard.

Ordering the Ride Home After the Fireworks Over Van Tuong Lake

Fireworks over Van Tuong lake close the evening of the 12th, and the lanes then fill with people heading for the same exits 5. Coaches stop at Lim town, Tien Du crossroads or Phu Thinh crossroads, and the last leg is by taxi or motorbike taxi 6. Book or message the driver while you still have signal.

Reaching the Posted Hotline About Parking Overcharges

Organisers published hotline numbers in 2026 for visitors who were charged more than the posted parking price, and fines were handed out to operators who broke the rules 18 7. A call or photo of the price board needs a working connection. Keep the number saved before you arrive.

When Is Lim Festival in 2027?

Lim Festival 2027 is expected on Wednesday 17 and Thursday 18 February 2027, the 12th and 13th days of the first lunar month, in Tien Du, Bac Ninh 1 8.

The date moves because the festival follows the lunar calendar, not the solar one. The lunar new year of 2027 falls on Saturday 6 February, so counting that day as the first puts the 12th on 17 February and the 13th, the main day, on 18 February 8. The organiser has not published the 2027 programme, so treat both dates as expected until the commune announces them.

Reading earlier editions shows how far the same lunar days swing across the solar calendar:

  • 2 and 3 February 2023, the first festival after a three-year pause 12

  • 21 and 22 February 2024 14

  • 28 February and 1 March 2026 1

The official festival is two days, the 12th and 13th. The 13th carries the main ritual in honour of Nguyen Dinh Dien, the local benefactor worshipped as a guardian of the old Noi Due cluster of villages, and it coincides with the pagoda festival 10. Some visitors arrive earlier, from around the 11th, when temples open for incense offerings and the New Year market is running 11.

Tip: Plan around the 13th. If you can only come once, that is the day of the seal procession and the main rites, and the 12th is the better day for the evening singing in artisans' homes 1 10.

Does Lim Festival Charge for Entry, or Only for Parking?

Organisers announced no admission ticket for Lim Hill in 2026; the charge visitors met was parking, and the prices were posted openly 6 19.

For the 2026 edition the commune police ran 14 official parking lots, six for cars and eight for motorbikes, each with guards and cameras 4. Fees followed Decision 05/2020 of the Bac Ninh provincial government 4. The posted prices were 6,000 VND for a motorbike and 24,000 to 60,000 VND for a car depending on the vehicle type 6. Three unofficial operators who charged more were fined in the first days of that festival 7.

Stalls are kept off Lim Hill itself, and organisers said they would end street vending, loudspeakers and disguised gambling around the site 4 18. Food is sold outside the main area instead 5.

  • Park only in the police-run lots with a posted price 4

  • Check the posted price board at the lot entrance before you hand over the keys 4

  • Call the hotline if you are asked for more than the board says 18

For a day trip the main costs are the coach fare, about 70,000 to 100,000 VND one way in 2026, plus parking if you drive and whatever you eat 6. Tips to singers are voluntary and are covered in the programme section.

Complaints about charging are taken seriously. In 2026 commune police published hotline numbers, and one parking collector was charged with collecting fees without authority and extortion after a dispute 18 4. Pay only at the lots with a price board and cameras.

Note: The 2027 prices have not been announced. The 2026 figures are a guide only, so read the board at the lot.

How Do You Reach Lim Hill From Hanoi on Festival Days?

You reach Lim Hill from Hanoi by car via the North-South Expressway to Tu Son, by coach to Lim town, or by city bus route 54 from Long Bien 6.

By car, the 2026 route ran across the Chuong Duong, Long Bien or Vinh Tuy bridge, then the Duong bridge, then the North-South Expressway (CT01) to Tu Son, and on for just over a kilometre 6. The alternative is National Highway 1A, turning into Dinh Bang near Bac Ninh 6. Noi Bai International Airport is in Hanoi, so arrivals continue from the capital.

On festival mornings police divert cars away from the site. Traffic was rerouted from 07:00 on both days in 2023 and 2024 12 14. The 2026 plan sent cars via Provincial Road 295B, National Highways 1A, 18 and 38, and Provincial Roads 295 and 286 3. Motorbikes, scooters and non-motorised vehicles are only barred when congestion builds, and police then redirect them 3.

The Hanoi to Bac Ninh coach stops at Lim town, and some coaches drop at Tien Du or Phu Thinh crossroads, where you continue by taxi or motorbike taxi 6.

  • Coach: about 70,000 to 100,000 VND per person one way in 2026 6

  • Bus: route 54 from Long Bien; tell the driver where you will get off 6

  • Car: leave early and use the police-run lots 3 4

If you have time left in Bac Ninh province, the same trip can take in Dau Pagoda, But Thap Pagoda, Dong Ho painting village and Phu Lang pottery village 6.

Tip: The last stretch is the slow one. Leave the coach at Lim town or the crossroads and walk the final lanes rather than staying seated in diverted traffic 6 12.

What Is the Order of Rites and Quan Ho Singing on the 12th and 13th?

The festival opens on the 12th with incense offerings at Hong An Pagoda and at the tomb of Nguyen Dinh Dien on Lim Hill, and the 13th brings the seal procession 1 2.

The 2026 programme gives the pattern a 2027 visit is likely to follow. On the 12th the commune held the opening offering from 07:30, the heritage ceremony from 08:30 on the main stage, and boat singing on Van Tuong lake between 14:00 and 16:00 6. Evening brought the main stage show, night singing in artisans' homes from about 19:00 and fireworks at 21:00 for about 15 minutes 5 6. On the 13th a procession set off from Dinh Ca communal house up the hill, about 800 people from four villages carried the sealed decrees, and the afternoon ended with a thanksgiving rite and singing in front of the tomb 2 18 6.

Quan ho is sung as alternating verses between two women of one village and two men of a twinned village, with the women in large round hats and scarves and the men in turbans and tunics 9. At the festival you see it in several settings: call-and-response in simple tents, on the open grass, behind the pagoda and from boats 11 16.

  • Sit down in a tent and listen for a full exchange; the hosts may offer betel quid as a gesture of welcome 11 16

  • Other draws are human chess, swings, blindfolded goat catching and pot breaking 1 6

Tipping is a custom, but organisers ask that singers receive money discreetly and do not hold out a hat 19 18.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has placed Lim Festival on the national list of intangible cultural heritage, and the certificate was formally received on the central stage on Lim Hill on the morning of the 12th in 2026 15 2. The 2026 edition was also the first run directly by the commune, which published rules on vending, loudspeakers and parking 4 7.

Around 400 regular police officers and about 200 security staff were deployed across the 2026 site, so officers are easy to ask if you lose the route 5.

Tip: Burn incense only at the designated points, and do not push into the procession route 6.

How Cold and Damp Is Lim Hill in Mid-February?

Mid-February on Lim Hill is cool, damp and often drizzly, because northern Vietnam sits under cold air masses from late winter into March 17.

The national forecast centre explained in February 2025 that the cold continental high was shifting east, which brings several days of light rain, drizzle and fog 17. A cold spell from 7 to 10 February that year kept minimum temperatures across the north and lowlands mostly between 11.0 and 14.0 degrees Celsius 17. At the 2023 festival it rained and was cold on the busiest day, and one visitor travelling in from Hoa Binh still said the singing made it worth the trip 13.

Peak days are very crowded and pushing is common, so keep your belongings close 6. About 165,000 people were estimated in a single night in 2026 7.

Dress for two different places. The tents and the grassy slope of Lim Hill are sheltered and busy, while Van Tuong lake is open water where the afternoon boat singing takes place, and the wind off the lake feels colder than the tents 6. Rites begin early, with the opening offering from 07:30 in 2026, so the first hours of the 12th and 13th are the chilliest part of the day 6. Wet grass also makes the paths up the hill slippery, which matters if you travel with older relatives.

What to pack:

  • A light waterproof jacket or a compact umbrella

  • Layers that go on and off between the hill and the lake

  • Shoes with grip for the grass and the lanes

  • Modest clothing for the pagoda and tomb, where rituals are held

Tip: Arrive early on the 13th. The procession can stretch over a kilometre, and it is easier to see it from the start than to cut across it later 6.

Where Should You Sleep Before an Early Start at Lim Hill?

The most practical bases for Lim Festival are Tu Son and Bac Ninh city, with Hanoi as the fallback for a day trip by coach 6.

Lim town and the surrounding villages of Tien Du are small, and the festival fills them from morning, so most visitors sleep elsewhere and travel in. Tu Son sits on the road you take in from the expressway, which makes the morning run shorter. Bac Ninh city has more rooms and shops, and the coaches and National Highway 1A both pass nearby 6.

Staying in Hanoi works if you take the coach and accept the road diversions. In 2023 and 2024 traffic was already being diverted from 07:00 12 14. Book as soon as the dates are confirmed and prefer a cancellable rate, because the area around Tien Du offers fewer rooms than Bac Ninh city.

Where you sleep decides how you handle the diversions. Coaches from Hanoi to Bac Ninh stop at Lim town, so a base in Bac Ninh city keeps the journey to a single coach ride 6. Because traffic was diverted from 07:00 on both days in 2023 and 2024, ask your host for an early departure rather than leaving at mid-morning 12 14. After the evening programme on the 12th, taxis and motorbike taxis at the crossroads are the last leg, so a base within a short ride is far easier than one an hour away 6.

  • Choose Tu Son for the shortest morning approach

  • Choose Bac Ninh city for the widest range of rooms and the coach stop

  • Choose Hanoi only if you want city nights and can leave before the diversions

Tip: Fix the booking once the commune confirms the dates, and ask the host about early check-out so you can leave before the morning diversions.

Which Bac Ninh Snacks Are Worth Eating Around Lim Hill?

Stalls are kept off Lim Hill itself, so you eat in the surrounding villages and in towns on the road to the festival 18 6.

Bac Ninh's known specialities are easy to find in the villages that line the route 6:

  • Banh phu the from Dinh Bang: sticky cakes of sweet yellow rice flour with mung bean, coconut and lotus seed, sold in pairs

  • Banh te from Cho village: thin-skinned rice cakes wrapped in dong leaves, best eaten warm

  • Pho gan chay: pho topped with charred pork liver, usually eaten in the morning or at noon

  • Nem Bui from Bui Xa: fermented pork roll wrapped in banana leaf

  • Banh khuc from Dien village: steamed green rice cakes filled with mung bean or onion, with a vegetarian option

Inside the festival, food and drink stalls were set up outside the main area in 2026, still being completed when organisers briefed the press 5. Hosts may offer betel quid as a welcome, a custom of hospitality more than a snack 16.

Food hygiene was checked before the 2026 festival: joint provincial and commune inspection teams penalised businesses with unclear origins or poor hygiene 7. Eat where food is cooked in front of you, and pay the price on display. Many of these snacks are also sold as gifts, so a small box of cakes from Dinh Bang or a roll of nem from Bui Xa travels well on the coach home 6.

Tip: Buy banh phu the on the way, in Dinh Bang, before the road diversions begin 6.

Will Your Phone Hold Up on Lim Hill When the Crowd Arrives?

Signal on Lim Hill is good enough for maps and messages, and in 2026 organisers installed a 5G station to serve the festival 5.

The strain comes in the evening on the 12th, when about 165,000 people were estimated in one night in 2026 7. Public Wi-Fi is not part of the plan, so relying on your mobile plan is the safer choice for maps, ride booking and group calls.

A Vietnam eSIM installed at home before you fly means the first minutes after you land at Noi Bai are not spent hunting for a shop. Keep your home number active for calls if you need it, and check the data connection at the airport before you board the coach.

The data you need depends on what you do: maps and chat use little, video from the main stage uses far more. There is no official figure, so plan by use.

Diversions can leave a map app a step behind, because police adjust them in real time according to the crowd and the volume of vehicles 3. Keep a screenshot of your coach booking and your accommodation address, and ask the officers at the checkpoints if a lane is closed. Seven hotline numbers were published in 2026 for complaints, so save one before you arrive 18.

  • Download an offline map of Tien Du, Tu Son and Bac Ninh before you leave

  • Save the parking hotline and your hotel address in your notes

  • Share a map pin with your group before you split between the hill and the lake

Tip: Film from the edge of a tent rather than the middle, and keep a charged power bank; the evening runs late.

Frequently asked questions

The festival officially covers the 12th and 13th days of the first lunar month. The 12th opens with incense offerings at Hong An Pagoda and the tomb of Nguyen Dinh Dien, and the 13th is the main day with the seal procession. The 2027 dates are expected to be 17 and 18 February 2027 1 8.

Tipping singers is a traditional custom, but organisers do not want it to look like begging, so singers are asked to accept money discreetly and not hold out a hat. In 2026 the rule was announced openly and violations were corrected on the spot 19 18. Visitors can tip politely after a song and without making a show of it.

Yes, the evening of the 12th is a separate programme. In 2026 it included a performance on the main stage, night singing in the homes of about five artisan families from around 19:00 and a roughly 15-minute fireworks display over Van Tuong lake at 21:00 5. The 2027 evening programme has not been announced yet.

Yes. City bus route 54 runs from Long Bien toward the festival, and coaches from Hanoi to Bac Ninh stop at Lim town for about 70,000 to 100,000 VND one way in 2026 6. Some coaches stop at the Tien Du or Phu Thinh crossroads, and you continue by taxi or motorbike taxi 6.

Motorbikes are allowed until traffic builds up. The 2026 traffic plan barred motorbikes, scooters and non-motorised vehicles only when congestion occurred, and police then redirected them to National Highways 1A, 18 and 38 and Provincial Roads 295B and 286 3. Official motorbike parking was posted at 6,000 VND in 2026 6.

No official figure exists, so plan by use: maps, chat and ride booking use little, while filming quan ho on the hill or boat uses far more. A 5G station was installed for the 2026 festival, but the evening crowd still strains networks 5 7.
