Why Does Losing Signal at Pointe-à-Carcy Spoil the Ice Canoe Race?

The ice canoe race is set for Sunday 7 February 2027 at 1:00 p.m. at Pointe-à-Carcy, on the Old Port side of Quebec City, and spectators stand at Docks 19 and 21 on open concrete beside the river 13. February in Quebec City averages a low of -16 °C 15, and the canoe crews race on the icy waters of the Saint Lawrence River 13. The action moves fast, the crowd shifts along the quay to follow it, and a friend who walks off for a hot drink is hard to find again without a shared location.

How Do You Track the Free Shuttle to Espace Quatre Cents?

In 2026 the free Vidéotron shuttles between Upper Town and Lower Town via Espace Quatre Cents left every 30 minutes, with the last departure at 17:00, and the Carnival linked a live-tracking page for them 4. Watching that map on your phone beats standing at a stop in the cold, and it tells you when the last shuttle has gone.

Where Do You Regroup After the Grande Allée Parade Ends Near the Parliament?

The Upper Town parade is listed for Saturday 13 February 2027 at 19:00, running along Grande Allée from avenue des Érables and ending at avenue Honoré-Mercier, near the Parliament Building 19. The parade lasts about 30 minutes 19. Share a location pin before the floats arrive, because a message saying “near the corner” will not find anyone on a street lined with people.

Which Cards Work at the Carnival's Ice Bars and Food Trucks?

In 2026 the organiser accepted cash and debit or credit cards on its sites, except American Express 3. Card terminals at the food trucks and bars need a connection, and so do bank app alerts and card-freeze buttons, so a dead signal can leave you counting coins at a hot-chocolate stall.

When Is Quebec Winter Carnival in 2027 for Bonhomme's Ten Days?

Quebec Winter Carnival 2027 runs from Friday 5 February to Sunday 14 February 2027 in Quebec City, Canada 1 12. That gives ten days and two full weekends, the format the Carnival adopted for its 65th edition in 2019 6. The organiser's own site lists the date range, the Effigy prices and the musical evenings, while the daily site hours for 2027 have not yet been published, so check carnaval.qc.ca before booking anything non-refundable 1 18.

Several fixed points are already listed. Québec City Tourism gives the Lower Town night parade on Saturday 6 February 2027 at 17:30 in Limoilou and the Upper Town parade on Saturday 13 February 2027 at 19:00 on Grande Allée 19. The ice canoe race is set for Sunday 7 February 2027 at 1:00 p.m. 13. The musical evenings run every night from 5 to 13 February 2027 20.

That rhythm matches the previous edition. The 72nd Carnival ran from 6 to 15 February 2026, with its two night parades on Saturday 7 February and Saturday 14 February 2026 and its ice canoe race on Sunday 8 February 2026 3 10. So in both years the parades fell on the two Saturdays and the race on the first Sunday.

The date follows no lunar or religious calendar: the Carnival is simply set from late January to mid-February, as it has been since the first major winter carnival in 1894 6. The modern version began in 1955, when Bonhomme Carnaval stepped out at the Porte Saint-Louis on 9 January and the mayor handed him the keys to the city 7. The mayor still gives him the keys at the start of each Carnival 7.

  • Parade Saturdays: 6 and 13 February 2027, the two big evenings of the programme 19
  • Weekdays: shorter site hours, 12:00 to 20:00 from Monday to Wednesday in 2026 3
  • Do not rely on: third-party sites listing other dates; the organiser and the tourism listing both give 5 to 14 February 2027 1 12

Tip: Arrive by Friday afternoon if you want the opening evening, since the organiser's 2026 sites opened at 17:00 on their first Friday 3.

How Much Is the Effigy Pass Before and After the 17 January Presale Cutoff?

The Effigy is the official Carnival pass, made from recycled maple tubing, and it is mandatory for visitors aged 13 and over 12 18. The organiser says children aged 12 and under do not need one 18. The night parades and the ice canoe race viewing from the docks are free 13 19.

For 2027 the presale price is CA$29 plus tax until 17 January 2027, and the regular price is CA$39 plus tax from 18 January to 14 February 2027 18. Online purchases carry extra fees, and each 2027 Effigy comes with a booklet of 14 winter discount coupons for local businesses 18. A Full Carnival Pass adds a Carnival toque, an Orignal drink, maple taffy and a hot drink, though the page does not list its price 18.

The 2027 Effigy is sold in four ways 18:

  • Online through lepointdevente.com, with extra fees 18
  • At participating Brunet stores in the Quebec City region from 12 November 2026 18
  • At the reception desk at 205 Boulevard des Cèdres from 4 January to 14 February 2027 18
  • At the Carnival sites from 5 to 14 February 2027 18

Effigy purchases were non-refundable, non-exchangeable and non-transferable in 2026, and groups of ten or more paid CA$36 plus tax each instead of the regular CA$39 plus tax 3.

Some activities cost extra on top of the Effigy, as they did in 2026 3:

  • Scotiabank ice sculpture workshops 3
  • Rappelling down Fairmont Le Château Frontenac 3
  • The St-Hubert snow bath 3
  • VIP seats at the night parades and the ice canoe race VIP ferry 2

For the ice canoe race, the VIP package is listed at CA$86.23 plus taxes for 7 February 2027 and includes a spot on the Lomer-Gouin ferry with heated and unheated decks, an open bar and music 13. The ticketing page offers Québec City and Lévis departures for that VIP experience 2.

Tip: Buy before 17 January 2027 to pay CA$29 plus tax instead of CA$39 plus tax 18.

How Do You Get From Jean Lesage Airport to Grande Allée?

Take RTC route 80 or route 76 from Québec City Jean Lesage International Airport, which sits about 15 km from downtown 16. Route 80 goes to Saint-Roch with connections to Old Québec, and route 76 goes to the Sainte-Foy bus and train stations, both leaving every 30 minutes 16. The RTC listed CA$4.00 per ride in exact change in October 2026, and a taxi to the city centre at a flat CA$41.40 16.

Quebec Winter Carnival 2027 is centred on two sites in the Upper Town: Place de l'Assemblée-Nationale, home of the Loto-Québec stage and, in 2026, Bonhomme's Ice Palace, and Place George-V with its snow and ice sculptures 10 12 20. Both sit around Grande Allée, the avenue running west from the Porte Saint-Louis. A third music stage is at Parc de la Francophonie in 2027 20. The playground Gougoune et doudoune was at the Espace 400 docks in 2026 10. The organiser has not yet published a 2027 site map 1.

The Plains of Abraham are part of the same neighbourhood. This 103-hectare city park receives about 4 million visitors a year, and its Major Events Site has hosted the Carnival's snow sculpture contest and a family zone with sliding, dog sledding and snow rafting 17. The Carnival's own history records an outdoor stage on the Plains in 2010, the Ice Palace at Place Desjardins on the Plains in 2012 and Bonhomme's Winterland settling there in 2015 6. Place d'Youville, at the foot of Old Quebec's walls, is where the Carnival's 2026 accessibility guide places both a drop-off point and reserved parking 11.

  • From the airport: RTC 80 or 76, or a taxi, then walk or change for Grande Allée 16
  • From other cities: Gare du Palais, in Lower Town, serves trains and long-distance buses 16
  • From Lévis: the ferry sails on the hour and half-hour by day, every hour at night, 365 days a year 16
  • Reduced mobility: drop-offs included the corner of D'Auteuil Street and Grande Allée in 2026 11
  • To the Limoilou parade: the 2027 route starts at 3e Avenue and 1re Rue, north of Saint-Roch 19

Tip: Leave the car at the hotel on parade nights; streets along Grande Allée and 3e Avenue fill with spectators before the floats arrive 19.

How Do the Limoilou and Grande Allée Night Parades Differ?

The two night parades are the Carnival's biggest free events, and each has its own route 19. The Lower Town parade is listed for Saturday 6 February 2027 at 17:30 and starts at the corner of 3e Avenue and 1re Rue in Limoilou, then follows 3e Avenue to 18e Rue 19. The Upper Town parade is listed for Saturday 13 February 2027 at 19:00, starting at Grande Allée and avenue des Érables and ending at avenue Honoré-Mercier, near the Parliament Building 19. Each lasts about 30 minutes and is free 19.

Limoilou is a residential neighbourhood with an earlier start, which suits families with children who tire by evening. Grande Allée runs straight into the Carnival's main site, so the later parade flows into the musical evening at Place de l'Assemblée-Nationale, where Marie-Mai is listed for 13 February 2027 20.

In 2026 the parades brought together more than 300 local performers, and VIP tickets added a reserved stand seat, a polar blanket and drink service 10 14. For 2027 the ticketing page lists a VIP zone for each parade with a grandstand seat, a blanket, an open bar and a private restroom 2.

Bonhomme leads the floats. He stands 7 feet tall and weighs 400 pounds of packed snow, and he wears a red tuque and the arrow sash that Quebec designated intangible heritage in 2016 6 7. The Carnival trumpet can reach up to 114 decibels, so you will hear the parade before you see it 6.

The rest of the ten days fills around the parades. In 2026 each room of the Ice Palace illustrated a Quebec legend, including one titled Living Together 10. About 40 snow and ice sculptures stood at the Scotiabank Sculpture Garden, and four ice bars served the Carnival Hot Toddy in ice glasses 10 14. The snow bath, first held in 1987, asks visitors to plunge into an outdoor snowbank in swimsuits and snow boots 5 6. The rappel down Fairmont Le Château Frontenac ran from 12 to 15 February 2026 and cost extra 3 10.

The ice canoe race sits between the two parades: Sunday 7 February 2027 at 1:00 p.m. at Pointe-à-Carcy, Docks 19 and 21 13. Four categories race: Open Elite, Women's Elite, Mixed Elite and Sport 5. In 1958 only 4 of 21 teams finished, a figure that explains why the crowd follows every crew 6.

Tip: For the Grande Allée parade, arrive before 18:30 and stand near avenue Honoré-Mercier if you want to walk straight into the musical evening afterwards 19 20.

Who Plays the 2027 Musical Evenings at the Loto-Québec Stage and Place George-V?

The 2027 Carnival holds musical evenings every night from 5 to 13 February 2027 on three stages, and the Effigy gives access 20. That is a big change from 2026, when the Carnival listed five musical evenings 10. Show times vary by stage and night, so check the organiser's detailed programme before you go 20.

The main stage is the Loto-Québec stage at Place de l'Assemblée-Nationale 1 20. Its 2027 line-up runs night by night 20:

  • 5 February: Fouki 20
  • 6 February: Nervo 20
  • 7 February: The Planet Smashers 20
  • 8 February: Jérôme 50 20
  • 9 February: Voïvod 20
  • 10 February: a country night 20
  • 11 February: Lou-Adriane Cassidy 20
  • 12 February: a drag tribute to Quebec music 20
  • 13 February: Marie-Mai 20

The second stage is at Place George-V, beside the sculptures, with Meghan Oak on 5 February, Boogát on 6 February, Waahli on 7 February and Marco Calliari closing on 13 February 2027 20. The third is at Parc de la Francophonie, with Ghetto Birds on 5 February, TomDūno on 6 February, DJ Bagel and guests from 7 to 11 February, Fafa Khan on 12 February and Lucky Rose on 13 February 2027 20.

For the main stage, the ticketing page sells a VIP front-stage zone from 5 to 13 February 2027 with a private entrance, a raised platform, a bar with two free drinks and a warming station 2.

Tip: Pair Saturday 6 February 2027 with the Limoilou parade at 17:30 and then Nervo at Place de l'Assemblée-Nationale, a short bus ride back up to the Upper Town 19 20.

How Should You Dress for -16 °C at the Ice Canoe Race and Night Parades?

February in Quebec City averages a high of -6 °C and a low of -16 °C, with about 63 cm of snow and 13 mm of rain across the month 15. January is colder still, with an average high of -8 °C, a low of -18 °C and about 73 cm of snow 15. Sunny days feel a little warmer, and snowstorms are possible 15. Quebec Winter Carnival 2027 falls in the first half of February, so the outdoor sites should sit near those averages 15.

The two events that test your clothing most are the ones where you stand still. The ice canoe race means waiting on open quays at Pointe-à-Carcy beside the river, and the Grande Allée parade starts at 19:00 on 13 February 2027, after dark 13 19. Dress for the lower end of the range on both.

What to wear, from the organiser's own dressing guide 9:

  • Base layer: merino wool or thermal polyester underlayers
  • Coat: a long cut reaching the upper thighs, insulated, windproof and waterproof
  • Accessories: a thick scarf, a wool hat and warm gloves
  • Footwear: waterproof, insulated boots with non-slip soles; laced hiking styles suit well
  • Legs: snow pants for outdoor activities

Québec City Tourism suggests the three-layer rule for outdoor play 15. The Carnival's 2026 Q&A says activities continue during snow showers unless conditions are unsafe, so do not cancel a day for snow alone 3. The same Q&A lists the Vidéotron heated zone and the Club Jouet toddlers' zone with a nursing area, both useful between outdoor stops 3.

Bring snacks to save money if you like: in 2026 the organiser allowed snacks and non-alcoholic drinks on its sites, but not inside the food service areas 3. Alcohol, chairs, glass or metal containers, large camping backpacks and drones were banned 3. Smoking was banned on all sites, and pets were not allowed except assistance dogs 3.

Tip: Keep a spare pair of gloves and a small power bank in an inside pocket; batteries drain fast at -16 °C 15.

Which Neighbourhood Near Porte Saint-Louis Puts You Closest to Bonhomme's Ice Palace?

Stay in the Upper Town of Old Quebec or along Grande Allée if you want to walk to the Carnival sites, and choose Saint-Roch or Sainte-Foy if you want a direct airport bus 10 16. Place de l'Assemblée-Nationale and Place George-V sit by Grande Allée, so any room within walking distance of the Porte Saint-Louis puts you close to the main stage, the sculptures and the end of the Grande Allée parade route 12 19.

The organiser lists eight partner hotels on its accommodation page, each with a reservation email, phone number and a booking link, and a separate page for 2027 discount coupons 1 8. It does not publish room rates, so compare prices yourself 8.

Each area suits a different Carnival plan:

  • Upper Town, Old Quebec: inside the walls, with Place d'Youville, the Porte Saint-Louis and Fairmont Le Château Frontenac on foot 11 16
  • Grande Allée: closest to the main stage and the Upper Town parade route; a pedestrian zone applied there outside weekdays in 2026 11
  • Limoilou: the Lower Town parade runs along 3e Avenue here on 6 February 2027 19
  • Lower Town and Gare du Palais: the train and bus terminal sits here, within walking distance for many Old Quebec visitors 16
  • Saint-Roch: served by RTC route 80 from the airport 16
  • Sainte-Foy: hotels near Boulevard Laurier, a short taxi ride from Gare de Sainte-Foy, served by RTC route 76 16

Lévis, across the river, is the other option, and the ferry sails every day of the year 16. The canoe race VIP experience is offered from both the Québec City and Lévis sides 2.

Book as soon as you settle your dates. The weekend of 5 to 7 February 2027 holds the opening Friday, the Limoilou parade on Saturday 6 February and the ice canoe race on Sunday 7 February 2027, so it is the likeliest weekend to fill 1 13 19. The second weekend has the Grande Allée parade on Saturday 13 February 2027 and the closing day on Sunday 14 February 2027 1 19.

Tip: Ask any hotel whether it participates in the Carnival's 2027 coupon programme before you pay 8.

Will Your Phone Keep Signal on Grande Allée on Parade Night?

Do not count on a fast connection on Grande Allée at the peak of the Upper Town parade on Saturday 13 February 2027, and sort out mobile data before you fly 19. The 2027 Carnival puts two night parades and nine musical evenings into ten days, and on those evenings thousands of phones share the same mobile cells around Place de l'Assemblée-Nationale 19 20.

A Canada eSIM installed at home runs as a data line beside your own SIM, so maps and tickets work from the moment you land at Jean Lesage Airport 16.

The pattern that matters is timing, not distance. Between the Ice Palace queue and the walk to Place George-V you are in a dense crowd for hours, and a message can arrive late when the network is congested. Send your meeting point before the parade starts, not during it, and agree a fallback such as the corner of Grande Allée and avenue Honoré-Mercier, where the parade ends 19.

What you will use data for:

  • Shuttle tracking: the free shuttle had a live tracking page in 2026 4
  • VIP bookings: the ice canoe race ferry, the parade grandstands and the front-stage zone are sold on the ticketing page 2
  • Show times: the musical evenings vary by stage and night, so the detailed programme is online 20
  • Group calls: share a location pin for regrouping after the Grande Allée parade 19

Phones lose charge quickly in the cold, and February nights average a low of -16 °C, so a full battery matters as much as signal 15. Keep the phone in an inside pocket between uses, and switch to the offline map if the network slows.

Tip: Download an offline map of Quebec City at the hotel, so you are not loading it with cold fingers on Grande Allée.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, watching from Pointe-à-Carcy, on Docks 19 and 21, is free, and the race is set for Sunday 7 February 2027 at 1:00 p.m. 13. The only paid option is the VIP package, listed at CA$86.23 plus taxes, which gives you a spot on the Lomer-Gouin ferry with heated decks, an open bar and music 13. Québec City and Lévis versions are both sold on the ticketing page 2.

No, the organiser says the Effigy is not required for children aged 12 and under, and the 2027 listing says it is required from age 13 12 18. For older children and adults, the 2027 Effigy costs CA$29 plus tax until 17 January 2027 and CA$39 plus tax from 18 January 2027 18. Online purchases carry extra fees, and in 2026 Effigy purchases were non-refundable 3 18.

The Lower Town parade is listed for Saturday 6 February 2027 at 17:30, starting at 3e Avenue and 1re Rue in Limoilou and ending at 18e Rue 19. The Upper Town parade is listed for Saturday 13 February 2027 at 19:00, from Grande Allée and avenue des Érables to avenue Honoré-Mercier, near the Parliament Building 19. Both are free and last about 30 minutes; VIP grandstand seats are sold separately 2 19.

The Loto-Québec stage at Place de l'Assemblée-Nationale opens with Fouki on 5 February 2027 and closes with Marie-Mai on 13 February 2027 20. In between come Nervo, The Planet Smashers, Jérôme 50, Voïvod, a country night, Lou-Adriane Cassidy and a drag tribute to Quebec music 20. The Effigy gives access, and a VIP front-stage zone with two free drinks is sold separately 2 20.

No, rappelling down the hotel was a separate ticketed activity in 2026, not covered by the Effigy 3. It ran from 12 to 15 February 2026 10. The 2027 ticketing page lists the canoe race, parade and musical-evening VIP products but not the rappel, so check again closer to the Carnival before you plan a trip around it 2.

Yes, in 2026 the organiser allowed snacks and non-alcoholic drinks on its sites, but they could not be eaten inside the food service areas 3. Alcohol, chairs, glass or metal containers, large camping backpacks, selfie sticks, tripods and drones were banned 3. Carry drinks in plastic, and remember that the food trucks and bars did not take American Express in 2026 3.
